Victor wiped the sweat from his brow as he leaned over his latest invention, the time machine, sitting in the corner of their garage. His workbench was cluttered with wires, blueprints, and parts from various projects he’d tinkered with over the years, but this one was different. This was going to change everything.
He adjusted a final wire, tightening a bolt as he glanced over at a framed photo of him and Natalie. The picture was from their senior year of high school—Natalie’s soft smile shining, but even then, Victor could see the pain behind her eyes. She’d endured so much through the years—bullied from preschool to high school. Kids had been cruel to her for no reason, and despite her kindness and gentle nature, no one had left her alone.
Victor always wished he could have done more to stop it, to protect her from the hurtful words and cruel pranks. He had spent years thinking about how he could make it right, and now, finally, he had a plan. The time machine was nearly complete, and with it, he would go back to those key moments and prevent the bullying before it could leave its mark on Natalie.
He stepped back and admired the machine—a tall, cylindrical structure with a sleek metallic finish. It hummed quietly with power, its core glowing faintly. The final touches were in place. All he had to do was calibrate it, set the time, and make sure it was stable enough for the journey.
His hands trembled slightly as he picked up a small control panel. He couldn't help but think about all the times Natalie had come home, holding back tears, trying to be strong despite everything. If only she hadn't had to endure that. If only someone had stepped in sooner, maybe things would have been different.
Victor sat down at the workbench, glancing over at the door that led to the house. Natalie was inside, unaware of his project, unaware of his plan. He had kept it a secret, wanting to surprise her once everything was ready. The idea of erasing her pain-filled past filled him with hope.
Taking a deep breath, he powered up the control panel. The lights on the time machine flickered to life, and the machine itself began to hum louder, its core pulsing with energy. He had spent countless hours studying time travel theories, working through the mechanics, the quantum physics involved. This was his moment to prove it could work.
But more importantly, this was his chance to make sure Natalie had the life she deserved—one without the scars of bullying.
As he began inputting the coordinates, he smiled to himself, imagining her reaction when she found out. She wouldn’t have to remember the hurt anymore. All those painful memories could be wiped clean.
Victor glanced at the display, the dates flashing in front of him—moments he had heard Natalie talk about in passing. The day the preschool kids called her names. The day in middle school when someone had ripped up her art project. The high school prank that had left her in tears. Each event was logged in his mind, each a moment he was ready to change.
"Just one more calibration," he muttered to himself, the excitement building. He was so close now.
In his mind, it was simple: go back, intervene, and return to a future where Natalie was free of the weight of her past.
He heard footsteps behind him, soft and hesitant. Turning, he saw Natalie standing in the doorway, her brow furrowed in confusion as she looked at the machine.
"Victor, what is this?" she asked, stepping closer. "What have you been working on?"
Victor stood up, wiping his hands on a rag. He hadn’t planned on revealing it just yet, but maybe it was time.
"It’s… it’s something that’s going to change everything, Natalie," he said, his voice full of warmth. "I’m going to fix everything. All the times you were hurt… all the times people were cruel to you. I’m going to make sure they never happened."
Natalie’s eyes widened in shock. "What do you mean? You’re talking about the bullying? Victor… you can’t—"
"I can," he interrupted, stepping closer to her. "I’ve built a time machine. I can go back and stop it, Nat. You won’t have to carry those memories anymore. You’ll never have to feel that pain again."
She looked at him, her expression shifting from shock to a mixture of concern and something else he couldn’t quite place. "But… Victor, that’s my past. I… I don’t know if you should be doing this."
Victor’s heart sank a little. He had expected her to be excited, to be relieved. "Natalie, you don’t have to suffer because of them anymore. Don’t you want that?"
She hesitated, her gaze dropping to the floor. "I’ve been hurt, yes, but… those experiences shaped who I am now. I’ve learned to be strong because of what I went through. I don’t know if I want to erase that."
Victor froze, his hands tightening around the control panel. He hadn’t thought of it like that. He only wanted to help her, to give her a chance to live without those wounds. But now… now he wasn’t sure what to do.
Natalie reached out, placing a hand on his arm. "Victor, I love that you want to do this for me. But we can’t change the past like that. It’s dangerous… and I don’t want to lose who I’ve become because of what I went through."
Victor stared at the glowing machine behind him. Could he really just let it go? Could he walk away from the chance to fix everything?
Or would changing the past create a whole new future they couldn’t predict?
He stood there, torn between his desire to help her and the reality of what that might mean.
