Be careful where you break into

Derek had always been a petty thief, prowling suburban neighborhoods at night to see what he could find. On this particular evening, he wore his usual dark hoodie and gloves, blending into the shadows as he crept from house to house. His heart pounded with excitement and fear as he tested doors and windows, searching for an easy target.

Luck seemed to be on his side when he found a large, well-kept house with a slightly ajar back window. Grinning, he carefully pried it open and slipped inside, moving silently through the kitchen and into the hallway. The house was eerily quiet, the only sound his own soft footsteps on the polished wooden floor.

Derek's eyes scanned the rooms he passed, evaluating potential loot. He noticed the door to the bathroom was slightly open and decided to check it out, thinking there might be some valuable cosmetics or toiletries he could sell. As he pushed the door wider and stepped inside, an intense flash of light blinded him.

For a moment, Derek was disoriented, unable to see anything but white. When his vision cleared, he tried to move but found himself completely immobilized. Panic surged through him as he realized he couldn't even speak. He felt an unnatural stiffness in his limbs, like they were no longer his own.

Struggling to understand what was happening, Derek managed to look into the bathroom mirror. The reflection that stared back at him was not his own. Instead, it was a mannequin, perfectly positioned in the middle of the bathroom. The mannequin's face was expressionless, its eyes lifeless and staring straight ahead. Derek's mind raced, his thoughts a chaotic jumble as he tried to comprehend the impossible.

He could feel his own consciousness trapped within the rigid, plastic form. Every attempt to move or scream was futile. His skin, or what used to be his skin, was now smooth and cold. He couldn't feel the texture of the clothing he wore, now perfectly molded to his form as if it were part of him. His joints, once flexible, were now fixed in place, rendering him completely motionless.

Hours seemed to pass as Derek stood there, helpless and terrified. He could hear faint sounds from outside the bathroom – the ticking of a clock, the distant hum of traffic – but he was powerless to respond or even react. The full horror of his situation sank in: he had become a mannequin, an inanimate object destined to be displayed in this house for open tours.

Days turned into weeks, and Derek's new existence as a mannequin was a torturous blend of boredom and fear. He witnessed people walking through the house, potential buyers commenting on the decor, never suspecting that the lifelike figure in the bathroom was anything more than a mere prop. He was moved around occasionally, positioned in different rooms as the realtor tried to stage the house for maximum appeal.

The transformation had not only stripped Derek of his freedom but also his humanity. He was now a silent witness to the world, forever trapped in a body that wasn't his own. The realization that he might never return to his former self gnawed at him, a constant reminder of the price he paid for his life of crime.

In the quiet moments, when the house was empty, Derek would reflect on his choices and the path that led him to this fate. He wondered if there was a way to break the curse or if he was doomed to remain a mannequin for eternity. The fear of an endless, motionless existence was overwhelming, and he wished more than anything for a second chance, a way to undo the magic that had ensnared him.

But as the days continued to pass with no change, Derek's hope began to fade, leaving him with the grim acceptance of his new reality.
