Though vessels like the Tempest-class scout ships and the immense arks stand as exemplars of the Andromeda Initiative’s technological prowess, it is the far humbler UT-47H Heavy Kodiak that serves as the workhorse upon which so much of their day-to-day operations in Heleus rely. Developed by Leonidas Defense Services, the UT-47H was initially conceived of as a full-fledged replacement for the standard Kodiak in use by the Systems Alliance Navy. Ultimately, concerns regarding its slower atmospheric speed, significantly higher production costs and intensive maintenance requirements discouraged the Alliance from proceeding with a full production run, sticking instead with the existing, already reliable models ubiquitous throughout Alliance service. For Andromeda Initiative founder Jien Garson, however, the Heavy Kodiak’s significantly improved durability and numerous redundant systems made it well suited for the Initiative’s mission of colonizing the Heleus Cluster, and several hundred were manufactured to serve as the core of the Initiative’s shuttle fleet carried aboard the Nexus and arks.

As with the base model, the Heavy Kodiak is a contragravitic vessel that relies wholly upon its Element Zero drive core to ensure lift, with its four main thrusters used primarily for directional control and acceleration. Though not an ODSY drive such as those employed by the arks, said drive core is still significantly more powerful and efficient than those installed in standard Kodiaks due to its proportionally larger size, increasing the vessel’s range and more than compensating for its far heavier armour and spaceframe. Likewise, as is common for Initiative ship designs, the Heavy Kodiak prioritizes survivability and technological sophistication over firepower; despite the concerns raised by more military-minded Initiative personnel, the shuttle bears no external weapons whatsoever. An extensive suite of redundant systems, both those present in the initial design and those added by Initiative engineers during subsequent overhauls, instead offers incredible durability, with backup power, life support and inertial dampening systems often ensuring the survival of passengers and crew in the event of a crash landing. Indeed, the Heavy Kodiak has proven so resilient that valuable components are routinely found still functioning in downed shuttles, and the prospect of salvaging such useful material for Hyena production or sale on the black market has served as the flashpoint for more than one clash between rival Outlaw gangs. A two-person crew is generally required to operate the shuttle, with the cargo compartment capable of holding up to a dozen passengers, though the numerous VI installed enable to craft to function with a single pilot if need be.

Perhaps the most noteworthy feature of the Heavy Kodiak is not its durability, but its ability to function in a wide variety of roles as the Initiative requires, thanks to the modular nature of its crew compartment and equipment hardpoints. For example, one shuttle might serve as a cargo transport ferrying supplies from the outposts to the Nexus, before being tasked to deploy mining probes on a long-range survey mission, before being deployed as a dropship and mobile command post for APEX fireteams. With the Initiative finally back on track following the colonization of Meridian, and new resources flowing in, the manufacture of additional Heavy Kodiaks has been designated a key shipbuilding priority, and Nexus scientists have even begun experimenting with new variants that integrate Remnant and angaran technology into their design.
