Laura had complained one time too many that her weekly allowance wasn't enough for everything she "needed."  Her husband, Steve, had ignored her complaints (and rightly so!) until one particular incident where the whining turned into a full-blown tantrum outside of a mainstreet dress shop when they were supposed to be going to the grocery store.  She made quite a scene while stomping her feet and calling him "cheap" in a shrill voice that was loud enough for passersby to hear.

When it happened, Steve calmly took her home and once there he marched her to the shed out behind the house where he ordered her to strip.  Laura, naked and shivering in the unheated shed, expected a simple strapping, but Steve decided that she would better learn from a different method.  He picked up a scratchy potato sack and quickly cut three holes in it and told Laura to put on her "new dress."

This, he informed her, was how she was going to spend the next 30 days--no shoes, no underwear, no dresses, no jewelry, no makeup, nowhere to wash but the hose in the shed, and not even a hair brush to run through her hair.  Hopefully, he explained, by the end of it she would understand what "cheap" really was.

"Now," he said before leaving the shed, "I think you have grocery shopping to do, don't you?  I'm sure all your friends and acquaintances will love your new look."
