Taken at the Houston Zoo, we have here a blue crane, otherwise known as the Stanley Crane (named after Sir Henry Stanley).  This bird is the national bird of South Africa, and is sacred to the Xhosa people.  Due to a number of factors, the population of blue cranes plummeted over the last 30 years and is now listed as a vulnerable species.
