At the mortgage company garage, Gina exited her car and had a few moments walking through the darkness to reflect on what a lucky girl she was: her husband bought and used a device that turned him into her mouth, meaning he had full control over her mouth and voice all day long. For a woman like Gina, who loved to be humiliated, it was a dream come true. She took the elevator up to the fourth floor where she worked and, on the way to her cubicle, passed by her stout friend Rosie.
“Oh, hey Gina!” Rosie called, “Happy belated birthday. So, how did you celebrate? Do anything fun?”
Gina tried to answer her friend (and complement her on the new yellow sun dress) but she had no voice. She tried to smile at her, but her mouth wouldn’t respond either. Of course, this was her husband Andy’s doing. After a few awkward moments where Gina and Rosie just stared at each other, Rosie walked back to her cubicle confused. As Gina entered her own workspace, a realization regarding the situation hit her: Andy could cause just as much trouble with his inaction as he could with making her talk. Thankfully, her job was based around responding to emails, not making phone calls, so he wouldn’t be able to directly interfere with her job duties.
Meanwhile, Andy was bored. It was a weird sensation for his wife’s mouth to be his whole body. He could still see and hear and feel, but there wasn’t much use when she was alone in her cubicle and all he could look at was her computer screen which was full of boring charts and numbers. He’d hum a bit to himself (quietly so as to not disturb her fellow coworkers) and noted how weird it was to hear the tune in his wife’s key. As Gina worked, Andy tried to keep her entertained as best he could: he’d stick out his tongue, he’d pull weird faces, he’d let her mouth hang open so she drooled all over herself. But these were small morsels for the both of them, and between his sighs and her finger drumming, it was clear they were both bored.
“Man, I don’t know how you can stand this crap.” Gina heard her mouth whisper. “ I mean, we met at a cracker factory and even that was more fun than this. What’s on the schedule for the rest of the day? Just this?”
In response, Gina opened a word document and typed that she had lunch in an hour and a meeting in the afternoon.
“Well, let’s head to the water cooler. I’m thirsty.”
Gina felt thirsty too and, as she got up, she wondered if he was feeling her thirst, or if it was another trick. At the water cooler, two co workers neither husband not wife recognized were chatting and joking with Gina’s boss, Ms. Bakeland. As Gina drank, the three joked some more, and Andy made her spray her drink and laugh obnoxiously at a punchline.
“Gina…” Ms. Bakeland started slowly, wiping the water from her face, “I would appreciate it if you did not do that in the future.”
Gina could only nod, frightened.
“And be sure to remember the meeting today. Now good day to you all.”
At lunch, Gina angrily typed away at her phone as she felt her mouth chewing her sandwich involuntarily.
“That was going too far” she typed, “She was my boss and you spat water at her! I want to keep my job, remember!?”
“You’re right.” Her mouth whispered, “I’m sorry, honey. Tell you what, I’ll behave myself through your meeting since it sounds important.”
“It’s just budget stuff but it is mandatory.” Her phone replied, “Just keep quiet and we should be good. Are you planning anything else for today?”
“Just one thing but it’s a doozy. Why? Do you want to call it quits?”
“Just one more thing, then we change you back when we get home.”
“…are you mad at me?”
“Only a bit for the water thing. This was a fun day, but it’s so much for one whole day. And the fact that it’s at work not helping. But now we know, right?”
“Right.”
True to his word, Andi didn’t make a peep as he endured hearing about sales projections and increased spending. He knew some of the higher ups were present and didn’t want to make any more trouble for his wife. In fact, he was a perfectly good mouth for nearly the rest of the day, speaking when Gina was spoken to, and remaining quiet for the rest of the time. That was, until quitting time; the married couple were just about to leave when Rosie stopped Gina.
“Hey there! Man, you were out of it today! I don’t even think you knew I was talking to you this morning. Husband keep you up too late last night? Ha!”
Before Gina could get away, her damn mouth had to open yet again.
“Ha, yeah I was pretty out of it. By the way, I’ve been thinking, Rosie: we’ve known each other a long time right?”
“Two years”
“Yeah, exactly. How about you and me go on a date together. Andy doesn’t need to know.”
“Gasp! Gina, are you asking me out behind your husband’s back? I didn’t think you were into girls.”
“I’m always up to experiment. So…Saturday at six?”
“Um…sure! Can’t wait.”
Gina was red as a tomato with shame: she had just asked her friend on a date and was powerless to stop herself! And to make matters worse, she wasn’t even into girls! But she had to give Andy credit for putting her in this conundrum: she either cancels, meaning an awkward phone call, or she goes on the date.
Gina loved to be humiliated. Andy loved to make her happy. They made a great team.
