"I still don't know how they do it," Renee shouted. Even with that, the crowd still almost drowned her out.
"Do what?" Gabby looked back to her with a smile.
"Dye the river! I mean, doesn't that cause some kind of health risk?" Renee leaned over the railing, getting a good look at the shimmering purple water.
"Well, it's not like we get mutant fish or anything!"
No sooner were the words out of her mouth than a blue head popped out of the water. It was oddly smooth and round, with a wide, derpy smile. It also wasn't anything local to the area.
"Quagsire!" It shouted dumbly.
Renee's knees went weak. She leaned a bit further over the railing. Her shoes felt like they were hanging from her ankles, then they dropped with a clatter.
"Oh my God!"
Renee heard the voice, but by then she was tipping further over, her body stretching, pulled into a long, eel-like shape.
"Mmmhhuu... Lotic..." The changing girl mumbled.
Strong hands tried to grab her shoulders, but she no longer had shoulders to grab. She slipped easily through the neck hole of her sweater, her whole body stretching and swelling and stretching.
There was a great splash of purple water as she broke through the surface, and she wriggled new muscles. By the time she resurfaced, she didn't remember anything about Renee, just that she was a happy, content, "Milotic!"
The loud cry sent her would-be rescuers staggering back, as more changes soon made themselves apparent.
"Hey, I think something's up." Dani kicked her legs gently, but it was still enough to make Robert wobble below her.
"Easy! You're not as young as you used to be!"
"Still as light though, dad." She rolled her eyes. "But seriously, something's up."
"You said that," he laughed. He couldn't see past the nearby crowd, so he looked up to her. "Expound!"
"It's like, a bunch of people panicking... I hear... Oh..." Her legs stopped kicking.
"Hear what?" Robert furrowed his brow. If he wasn't mistaken, something was matching his legs ache, like if Dani had suddenly gained weight.
The more he thought about it, the more noticeable it was. Her thighs felt softer, and... There was something brushing against his back. Like his daughter had a tail.
"Uh... It's... Mhhuh. Uhhnnn..."
Robert's legs gave out, and he fell backwards with a pained grunt. Dani huffed as she fell, the wind driven from her lungs.
"Oh my God! Honey, are you okay?" He rolled to his belly to get a look at her, and froze.
She was swollen, and her skin looked like something closer to hide. There were plates on her hips, and her belly had swollen well past the belt of her jeans.
Strangest of all was the seam that had formed along her waistline, like a marsupial's pouch.
"Dani?" Robert gulped.
She coughed more, finally catching her breath. Then she lunged at him, grabbing his face in her newly-clawed hands.
Dani roared, "KANGASKHAN!"
His world swam, everything got bigger. Loose things... Clothes? Fell off of him. It was okay, because he was still in her hands.
He tried to talk, but only a faint mewing slipped from his throat. Fortunately, his mother knew exactly what he wanted. She flexed her body, tearing off the loose things on her body, then she promptly stuffed him inside her pouch.
The baby curled, nestling in the warmth. He heard more cries from outside, but didn't pay any attention to them. He was his Kangaskhan's baby, and all was good.
Robin leaned out her window, getting a good look at the chaos that was spreading through the crowd below. "What the..."
She squinted, as though that might make this make sense.
It looked like people, hundreds of them, were changing into brightly colored creatures. It was spreading rapidly through the throng of people, and she hurriedly pulled her head back, closing the window as quickly as she could.
Not quickly enough.
"-idgeotto!" A bird's frantic cry slipped through the crack in her window, an instant before she could fully close it.
"... Ah. Ahhh..." She backed away, uneasily. Her voice sounded a bit lighter, almost musical.
"You find out what's happening out there?" Her boyfriend Amber called from the other room.
She stumbled that way, gasping. She reached for the wall to stable herself, only to fall against it. Her arm was far shorter than she was used to.
"Babe?" Amber rounded the corner, their eyes full of concern.
"Tsareena!" Robeen cried.
The human before her squished, like they were hit with a meteor and reduced to a pink blob. Then it bounced up, into a spherical shape with short, stubby limbs.
"Jigglypuff!" It squeaked at her, confusion rapidly rippling across its eyes, soon replaced with a feral mischief.
"Tsareena!" Tsarobin stumbled away from what was her boyfriend, feeling her spine ache as he rhips sucked it up. Her legs were the same length, but her upper body was swinging down more and more.
Her hair felt funny, too. It was thicker now, heavier. Instead of light, brushable locks, heavy petals now adorned her scalp.
It felt almost like a nightmare, but it was too vivid to be anything but reality. "Tsar! Tsareena!" She tried desperately to say anything but her new name.
The Jigglypuff that had been her lover tilted its head... Well, its whole body. Then it started to sing it's name, again and again.
Tsareena... Robin... Her eyes... heavy...
She wobbled and fell flat on her face. Fortunately, she no longer had a nose to bruise against the floor.
Her hips wiggled as she snored, swelling into a plantlike tutu that better fit her new form. When she would wake, hours later, she would have no recollection of anything except a life as Tsareena.
This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening. Kora hugged her arm to herself tightly, desperately trying to ignore how fat and squishy and wonderful it felt. Horrible. How fat and squishy and horrible it felt.
She could hear it spreading, could feel it spreading. Everyone around her was still changing, still bellowing more and more of those cries that kept slithering into her ears and bouncing around her brain. Of course, with big, heavy ears like that, it was hard not to hear… No!
Kora let go of her right paw, fumbling for her ears and finding them just as fluffy and huge as ever. She breathed a sigh of relief that tickled her throat. “Vui, veee…”
Except that wasn’t right. She wasn’t supposed to have huge, fluffy ears, was she? She wasn’t supposed to have a thick ruff of fur around her neck even though it was perfect to catch all the drool that slipped past her growing muzzle because she couldn’t help but-
Kora was drooling. She shuddered, trying to slurp her tongue back in her mouth. It wouldn’t fit. It was too big. The most she could manage was a blep, a slight peeking of her tongue past her dark, rubbery lips. Even that made her feel like she was choking, trying to stuff so much tongue inside her mouth that her cheeks ached.
“Grooowwwlithe,” a nearby man(?) stumbled, momentarily falling into the alley. A thick, fluffy tail had burst from his backside, and Kora felt a pang of envy. Her ears drunk in his words, and she couldn’t help herself.
“Eevee, vuieeveevui!” It spilled past her lips, echoed by a wet splat of drool that she couldn’t quite catch with her fat, useless paws. Kova’s back cramped, and she fell onto her cushiony, soft, huge, perfect paws.
No, they weren’t perfect. Nothing about this was perfect. Especially not how her tailbone was so wonderfully tingly as it stretched out, or how warm and soft her butt felt with an enormous heavy tail. That definitely wasn’t perfect, no matter how good it made her feel-did she just think her name was Kova?
No, it was… Kovee. Keeva… KeeveeEeveeEeveeEevEEVUIEEVEEVUIEEEVEE!” How long had she been babbling her own name? Why was she still tangled in all these clothes? How come she couldn’t stop drooling? Oh, she knew that one. Because she was a brainless derpy little Eevee, of course. She panted happily, idiotically wagging her tail and yipping all the humanity away from that Growlithe-to-be in front of her.
It started as a parade to celebrate human history, but quickly had devolved into the birth of hundreds of new species. And there was no end in sight.
