(Women to Dinosaurs)

Zia’s head swam, and her mouth tasted like cotton and iron. She squeezed her eyes shut and forced herself to swallow, then opened her eyes. A few blinks cleared her vision, revealing that she was in some sort of pit. It almost looked like the sort of enclosure that belonged at a zoo.

The Hispanic woman grimaced, holding a hand to her head. “Where in the hell…”

A soft groan from beside her told her she wasn’t alone here, and the woman looked to find Claire Dearing curled into a ball on the ground. The redhead looked to be in some state of distress, and Zia rushed to her side.

Zia didn’t ask to see if the woman was okay—she could tell that just from looking at her. Besides, empathy wasn’t something she was keen on expressing. Instead, the woman adjusted her glasses, checking her employer for any sign of contusion.

“Zia Rodriguez.” A male voice turned her attention upwards, but only for a moment. She caught sight of an unfamiliar man, with dark skin and features that might have been friendly in other circumstances. “I’d say you were hard to track down, but I think you’d appreciate honesty.”

Zia double-checked her patient, before nodding to herself. There didn’t seem to be any physical trauma on Claire, which meant she was free to inflict some emotional trauma on her captor. “When I get out of here, I’ll—”

“‘You’ll’ what?” He cut in.

“Don’t interrupt me.”

“Then come up with things that are worth saying.” The man laughed. “I’m Doctor Roberts, and it’s my immense pleasure to be addressing such a renowned Paleo-Veterinarian.”

Something about the way he said that set her nerves on edge, and Zia’s brow furrowed. “Hey. Shut up and get us out of here. You so much as try anything, and—”

“More empty threats.” Roberts waved. Zia decided that she might actually hate the man. “But more to the point, there is a very real reason why I’ve taken the trouble of acquiring the two of you. You see, I happen to be interested in helping our ancient friends as well.”

“Oh, Kidnapper, Dinosaur Enthusiast, General Ass? Anything else you want me to file in the police report?”

“As a matter of fact, I think ‘Innovator’ would fit me quite nicely. See, I’ve come up with a rather fantastic formula, and I’d like you two to be the trial run.”

Claire groaned again, and Zia turned towards the redhead. A scathing retort died on her lips as she noticed Claire’s belly was beginning to stretch against the woman’s arms. The redhead’s eyes fluttered open, and she looked up with a pained expression. “Help…”

Zia didn’t know how, though she’d never admit that. Instead, she lifted Claire’s shirt, watching the affected area with mounting horror. Claire was gaining weight, but that wasn’t the extent of what was happening to her. The woman’s skin was losing some of its smooth, soft texture.

“Zia, what’s happening to me?” Claire whimpered, gasping as her chest swelled further. The rest of her was starting to bloat too, her legs and arms getting thicker and thicker still. Creamy, pale skin darkened in shade as it was stretched out, shifting to a greenish brown.

“She doesn’t know.” Roberts answered for Zia, one of her pet peeves and yet another reason to dislike the man.

“Yeah? Well I know you’re a prick who drugs woman.” Zia retorted, cupping Claire’s cheeks her hands and looking into her blue eyes. She could see motes of a darker black swirling into Claire’s irises, which didn’t match any sort of drug she knew.

“Need a hint? Of course you do. You might want to roll her onto all fours.”

Zia refused, as was her nature. Like hell she’d take advice from a man. The Hispanic woman instead rolled Claire onto her back, which turned out to be a massive mistake.

Claire outright screamed at that, flailing her arms and legs. Her feet split through her shoes, revealing toes that were in the process of shrinking into trunk-like feet. Her hands were little better off, the stumps pawing at the air.

“STOP IT!” Claire gasped, looking down past her growing, leathery bulk. “It HURTS!”

Zia ducked her head down towards the woman’s back, and could see why: growths were stretching from Claire’s skin, actually tearing through her clothing. Hating herself for having to play along with Roberts, Zia heaved Claire onto her belly. She told herself it was to get a better look at the growths, and so she leaned in closer to them.

What she saw was an impossibility. They were bony, almost pentagonal plates that had shorn through Claire’s clothing with ease. It was like Claire was growing a sawtooth pattern of spikes along either side of her spine, the two rows trailing from the back of the woman’s neck to her tail…

Zia paused. She was going to say ‘tailbone’, but there was a good deal more than just a bone. Claire’s spine was stretching out from her backside, growing into a fully realized tail. The spikes continued along this, ending at a tip that sported four tusk-like lances.

“Oh my God, you’re becoming a Stegosaurus.”

“WHAT?” Claire looked up to Zia, grunting and shuddering her figure as it stretched. Zia watched, almost in awe, as Claire’s body barreled out. Her feminine breasts were swallowed by prehistoric hide, and her legs thickened to support this better.

“Right in one! I knew this one was bright.” Roberts laughed. “And, you see, that’s why we need you here. You’re going to make sure that Claire Dearing ends up as a healthy Stegosaurus.”

Zia was at a loss for words for once in her life. Claire wasn’t.

“NUUOORRrrghh!” Claire groaned, her neck thickening. She shuddered in horror, and her hefty frame swayed with the motion. The woman’s delicate tones had devolved into a low and guttural cry, the kind that Zia knew all too well. “PHHLRRGHHH!” As she begged for mercy, her face distended, nostrils widening on her face and exaggerating her exhalations.

“It’s gonna be okay.” Zia lied, taking a step away from her growing friend. Claire had doubled in size, and there was no sign of stopping. She knew that Stegosauruses tended to grow to the size of small buses, and it seemed that Claire wasn’t going to break that mold.

“NHHGPHH!” Claire snorted, working her lips with clear disgust on her features. They were hardening into a thick, clumsy beak. It was short, blunt, and audibly clacked shut with each work of her jaws. “NHUURT STUHHGUUOOO!”

Zia couldn’t help but marvel at the sight. Claire had lost almost all of her human features, and it looked like the woman’s mind was next to change. “This isn’t possible.” She muttered, staring in shock.

Claire didn’t seem to understand her words, grunting once in confusion; then in panic. She bellowed louder, stomping her feet against the ground. Hair fell from her head, and the darkness in her eyes swirled all the deeper.

The human dipped towards her changing friend, wrapping her arms around as much of the woman’s neck as she could. It was like hugging a living tree trunk, and she could feel Claire’s throat ripple with every inhalation and exhalation.

“There, there… Shhh…” Zia cooed, looking up into Claire’s beady eyes. The woman’s skull was thickening, and Zia had a suspicion that her brain was smoothing over. Drool trailed down the side of Claire’s beak, and she shook the last of her hair from her head.

Somehow, impossibly, Roberts had done it. He’d made a woman, one of the brightest minds of their generation, into a drooling Stegosaurus.

“Now, my own team assures me that this is a complete, healthy change. They say that there should be nothing left of the subject save an animal, and that the animal will be in perfect condition. But I like to get a second opinion. So, thoughts?”

“My thoughts are that you’re a monster.” Zia looked up to the man and hissed angrily.

“Maybe.” He shrugged. “But I’m about to be a very rich one. I’d say that your friend’s change did just fine, given that you’re not asking me for any emergency equipment.”

Zia pursed her lips tighter, but didn’t deny what he said. If there was any mercy about what had just happened, it was that Claire was going to live a full dinosaur life, pending any run-ins with predators.

“Good. Now, as for you…”

“What? You’re going to try and keep me here to watch over her? Fat chance, I’m going to the cops first chance I get. You’re going to pay.” Zia glowered. The threat was a good one, she knew that even if they didn’t believe her at first, she could certainly convince the police to her side.

“Well, you’re half right. I’m going to keep you here. And you certainly will be watching ‘over’ her.” Roberts laughed.

Something in his words clicked, and a pit settled into Zia’s stomach. She looked to the Stegosaurus, who snorted dismissively, then turned towards a patch of grass in her enclosure, breaking the woman’s embrace.

Left alone with the madman, Zia could feel that pit of dread growing, a very physical discomfort settling into her belly. She pressed her hands against it, and whimpered as it pressed back. “Not me, too…” She groaned.

“There’s a bright side to all this: you really like Brachiosauruses, and now you get to help repopulate the species.”

“Screw y-ugh!” Zia hugged herself tightly, feeling her form begin to barrel out. She looked up anxiously, seeing that the ceiling was impossibly high above her. Several tree leaves were kept at the top of the pen, almost mocking her with the fact that they’d soon be her snack.

“And with that, I don’t think there’s anything important you have left to say. Farewell, Doctor Rodriguez. It’s been a pleasure.” Roberts turned smartly on his heel and left without another word, which was perhaps the greatest indignity she’d suffered since getting her.

Zia wasn’t even worth the time needed to watch her transformation. She seethed with anger, balling her hands into fists and stomping a foot on the ground. Then her changes began in earnest, and she realized she’d just made her last human gestures.

Her limbs were first. Her thighs bulged, and her calves and ankles followed suit. Her jeans dug tightly into her legs for a moment, then the denim split at the seams. Her canvas sneakers barely lasted any longer, as swelling, trunklike feet nearly exploded from within them.

Her arms were little better off, growing heavier, too heavy to lift. Her bones thickened within them, and Zia let out a groan of distress as she was forced to stoop over, letting her arms lean before her. It gave her a perfect sight of her slender fingers thickening; her hands bulging out into those ugly elephant-like stumps. Her nails grew thick and tough, covering her fingers and pushing them back into her oafish feet.

Then her neck wrenched violently back, and Zia thudded to all fours. She grunted in distress from the sensation—it wasn’t painful, but it was certainly jarring. The feeling of wrongness only grew worse as her neck began to stretch, bones creaking as they formed.

“NGGGHOUUU!” Zia bellowed, feeling the sound start deep within her chest, traveling up a neck that was as tall as her old body had been. Said old body was looking less and less feminine by the second, as her shoulders and hips rotated to better let her live with this posture.

Her belly ached as it puffed out further, its heft pressing her feet deeper into the ground. In a way, she was thankful for this: it helped counterbalance the weight of her new neck. Another counterbalance sprouted from her backside, a long and thick tail cracking out from above her thick rump.

Her skin had lost its tanned shade, and instead looked like a blueish gray. She could actually crane her neck to look at her whole body below herself, and her jaw fell slack in shock. She knew she was looking at her own body, but she was seeing a Brachiosaurus’s form, with a human shirt that didn’t last much longer.

Her form rippled as it swelled, heft and bulk adding themselves to her body to better give her the ideal Brachiosaurus body. Unlike with her jeans, her shirt didn’t even have a chance to resist. It practically exploded from her swelling frame.

Zia was naked, but she didn’t feel the cool air on her skin. Instead, her tough and wrinkled hide was enough to shield her from the elements. It was just another aspect of her inhumanity, and one that drove her to bellow in despair. “OUUUUUURRR! RHHOOUUUU!”

She curled her long neck, looking up and watching as the leaves above her drew closer. Something fluttered past her eyes, and she realized she was seeing her hair falling from her head. That was nothing compared to the ache that settled in her skull a second later as her head grew, snapping her glasses down the middle.

Her lips thickened, giving her a goofy appearance as they pushed away from her graying face. She could feel her tongue thickening too, its mass pressing easily against wide-spaced, rounded teeth. Her mouth seemed to stretch in time with her muzzle, the base of her jaw stubbornly remaining by her neck despite the lengthening of her features.

Zia thundered another bellow as her nose began to ache. “OUUUURHGHHOOUU!” She watched as it moved higher on her new snout, pushing her eyes to the sides of her head as she moved. She had to cross her eyes to see ahead of herself, watching as she grew the typical forehead-nostrils of her new species.

“OUUUUGH!” She sounded like a whale. While Claire’s voice had become something coarse and guttural, there was almost a sad hint of music to Zia’s new tone. Somehow, she could still hear perfectly fine, despite her ears sinking into small holes at the sides of her massive head. She wanted to come up with some sort of fitting last thought, but was having trouble coming up with the words for it.

That filled her with dread, and Zia realized that she was getting dumber. It had never once crossed her mind, not even in her worst nightmares, that she might lose her intelligence. Yet here, now… She struggled to finish the thought.

Her skull creaked as it thickened, and she smacked her lips hungrily. Her massive neck, nearly forty feet in length, swayed as she struggled to retain some sort of intellect. It was a struggle soon forgotten in favor of the delectable leaves above, and the Brachiosaurus craned her neck forward to take a deep bite from them.

One of the leaves tickled her nose, and she sneezed onto it a second before chomping down. Zia Rodriguez would have been humiliated to look like such a moron, but Zia Rodriguez wasn’t there anymore. Her eyes glazed over completely as she dopily ate her fill, the first Brachiosaurus of what would soon be a herd.
