After the advent of Fox Serum's takeoff, more and more thrill-seekers started to use the potion. There were plenty who wanted to hang-glide as a flying squirrel, some who wanted to brave the coldest of nights as a polar bear, and others yet who challenged themselves to go spelunking as bats.
And then there were the extremists, the people who flirted with death constantly to get a rush like no other. Social media filled with 'bug challenges', or people becoming small animals then running across interstates, risking roadkill. They lived and often died for the sport, chasing adrenaline and putting their lives on the line.
Yet despite what one would expect, the most dangerous place for these aptly named 'deathchasers' wasn't a highway or hunting ground. No, the most dangerous place for them was at Cafe de Fox, a restaurant that specialized in shellfish of all varieties.
It's here that we find our two heroes, a husband and wife who were willing to risk it all for their hobby... And, of course, for the free weekly lobster dinners that were promised by the restaurant to any survivors.
Terrence and Andrea Holmes were former stuntmen who found a new love in transformation. It started with the usual extreme living as animals; then Terrence discovered deathchasing, and he was never the same. Of course Andrea went along with it at first; she loved him. But time had turned her hesitant acceptance into resentment, and the woman had finally had enough.
Naturally Terrence had no idea-how could he? For him, her frowns were just the lack of adrenaline that came after a good change, and so he devoted himself to more and more dangerous stunts, hoping to bring back the spark of their marriage, unknowingly dooming it.
Yes, Andrea had been at wit's end, and so she'd been the one to recommend they head to Cafe de Fox, enjoying a weekend trying to survive the most ravenous predator of all: man.
The two of them waited outside the manager's office with smiles on their face, holding each other's hands as they gripped their consent waivers tightly. Little did Terrence know that Andrea's smile was relief that she'd finally be rid of the troublemaking thrillseeker.
"Sorry for the delay, I can take you now." A voice called from within, and the two opened the door to find Jacques le Mar awaiting them. He was the restaurant's owner, and had been Andrea's friend before he even got into the restaurant business, back when he was Jackie Marks.
"Jackie!" Andrea exclaimed, wrapping him in a tight hug, her heart fluttering with excitement. This was really it; she'd finally managed to arrange everything!
"As I have told you countless times since we started talking again, it is Jacques now." The man replied cooly, his usual joke. He played it really well too, it was like he was really offended!
Andrea sniggered and pat her old friend on the arm, eager to get the show on the road. "So... Do you have the serums ready?" She asked, practically bouncing on her heels.
Her husband looked to her with a delighted smile. Then he did something he hadn't done in months: he wrapped his arms around her, kissing her on the cheek. "I'm really glad we're together on this, sweetie." He said, that grin not leaving his face.
For a moment, Andrea almost felt bad for him. But memories of how panicked she'd always been when they were transformed filled her mind, and she realized this was for the best. It was better he die on her terms than she die on his, after all.
Jacques stepped around his desk to reveal a pair of matching vials, little glass lobsters with a cork as the tail. "You know the dangers of transformation, so I'm not going to rehash them for you."
Terrence smiled, raising his hand as he interjected. "Could you give us the short version? I really want this to be special, since it's the first deathchase that Andrea's proposed."
Jacques looked at him with something approaching pity, and Andrea feared he would tell her husband what she was really up to. But instead, the man shook his head, chuckling gently. "If you insist. Our restaurant offers patrons the cheapest seafood around, all thanks to Fox Serum.
"Endangered and expensive species are available to the common man because of people willing to take the plunge into our tanks. And convicted felons, of course, but those are changed to order." The man chuckled, picking up the serums and handing them over.
"So, without further ado..." He paused expectantly, and the couple took their vials eagerly, uncorking and downing them in one go.
A familiar pleasure flooded Andrea's mind, and she shivered with delight as change began to sweep its way along her body. While she didn't want to transform, she also didn't want to make her husband's death look suspicious. Jacques had arranged for them the least popular tank in the house, so after her best friend Gina ordered and ate her husband, she'd be in the clear.
The thought of being a free woman again sent a titilating shiver through her body, and she giggled as her skin began to darken, forming a thick and mottled blue carapace. "Ooh, it's starting!" She breathed, looking down to her hands as they twisted and reformed into oversized claws.
Pleasure and anticipation both filled her world as she flexed her new claws appreciatively, feeling hard chitin plated segment themselves along her back. Then they all shifted, forcibly straightening her spine and making standing uncomfortable.
The woman yelped, falling to her belly in time for her legs to fuse behind her, forming a large fanned tail. That wasn't entirely expected, she thought ruefully. She'd expected the changes to be fairly straightforward, but it seemed that as ever, change was willing to surprise.
Sure enough, her belly began to tingle, and a moan passed her lips as she felt several distinct appendages sliding their way out of her chest. It was insane and utterly alien, sending a quiver of trepidation through her mind. But she'd already committed to the change, and so she closed her eyes, determined to keep from panicking.
All she had to do was focus on how pleasurable the changes were, and not how she was basically becoming a giant sea bug... This plan of hers fell to shambles as her eyelids began to pull open around her eyes, forcing her to look at the man-lobster hybrid before herself.
Then Andrea realized that her eyelids weren't so much being forced open as it was that her eyes were sliding out of her skull, growing out on thin stalks. She screamed in shock at that, though it came out as a gurgled hiss, her vocal chords having already fallen to the changes.
Much as she'd wanted to stay calm and collected during this transformation, it seemed that the changes were doing everything possible to horrify her. Her mouth bifurcated into mandibles and her sinuses screamed in protest as a pair of antennae shot out of her receding nose.
All the while, her bones began to dissolve under her new exoskeleton, and her eyes slid to the sides of her head, giving her a much better view of the back of her body than she'd have liked. But perhaps the worst part of her changes was how she now completely lacked the ability to emote, her lobstery face devoid of conveying any motion save antennae-waggling.
How could she not have realized that lobsters were such horrifying things to become? She'd been lured into complacency by animated movies teaching her that crustaceans could be funny; she had no idea that they were really so disturbing!
In her blind panic, she'd missed her husband's changes, seeing something writhing within the expanse of his clothing. That was odd, his serum must have acted faster than hers-though Andrea had definintely begun to shrink already. After all, her new legs had only pressed at her clothing; they hadn't shorn through what was once a tight-fitting crop-top.
The woman shivered in trepidation, only to hiss as the world immediately began to grow around her, her body shrinking smaller and smaller with every passing second. How was this possible; what was going on? Her tiny heart hammered in her chest, and she found her claws instinctively clacking as her clothing billowed around her, trapping her in darkness.
For a moment, everything was still. The pleasure of the changes had come and gone, and now she was trapped in this monstrously alien body. Then a light shot through the darkness of her world, and Andrea's eyes refocused to see Jacques's face looking through the collar of her shirt.
"Hello!" He chirped, and Andrea trembled in shock. She'd expected to be deaf like this, but now she could hear? What was the deal with that?
"Relax, I gave you a special serum, so you could hear people both in and out of the water. You want to enjoy this, no?" Something glimmered in his eyes that she couldn't quite recognize, but Andrea dismissed the chill that his gaze had sent down her spine.
Whatever it was, it was nothing to be afraid of. After all, this was Jackie! She sat still as the man reached for her claws, a strong elastic band moving from his fingers to her chitin, holding them shut. She looked to him in confusion, twitching her antennae, but the man simply smiled back.
"It's for appearance's sake." He said simply, picking her up and letting her see that Terrence had a similar pair of elastic bands around his claws.
Though she didn't like being bound, it wasn't the worst thing that could happen to her... Andrea looked to her husband, wishing she could laugh at how eager he seemed for this latest deathchase. If he only knew how it would end!
She kept this giddiness going in her chest all the way to her tank, and with a splash she and Terrence were both dropped into its confines.
The cool water felt good around her hard body, especially on her glassy eyes. Andrea thumped to the sand 'floor' of her tank contentedly, stretching out and preparing to enjoy her time as a lobster.
Though ideally Terrence would be eaten right off of the bat, it would look too suspicious if that were the case, so Andrea had asked her friend Gina to come in a day or two after they'd changed, just to make sure that the police didn't dig too hard into the death of another stucko.
Andrea expected the excitement that constantly welled up in her chest, and she let it out by playing with the man that would soon be food. But what she hadn't expected was that she was actually enjoying this! She'd forgotten how easy it was to get into a transformation when there was no fear of death, and seeing Terrence excited like this was a little cute.
But needs were needs, and Andrea needed to be rid of him. Every time she started to feel guilty about what was to come, she reminded herself that this was for the best. To her surprise, it actually worked, and she spent the rest of her time enjoying the change.
Then, two or three days into their transformation-time really flew for Andrea when her only world was a small glass tank-Gina arrived. The woman sashayed her way to the back, by Andrea and Terrence's tank, and she mimed looking at all of the aquatic creatures available for consumption.
Jacques approached her just as planned, bowing and giving the girl a menu. "Hello, and welcome to Cafe de Fox. Do you know what you'll be ordering?"
"Hm..." She began, her brow furrowed as she examined the menu a little more closely. "I don't know... How about... That one?" She pointed to Andrea's cage, straight at Terrence.
Jacques looked to the tank, winking at it. "Which of the two would you like, the female or the male?"
Gina paused, tapping her lip. "I think... The male. I can't wait to have him inside me." She grinned at the tank too, and Andrea felt her pulse begin to race. This was really happening!
She looked back to Terrence to find him looking at her stoically, as though he was resigned to his fate. Well, good for him! He knew the risks, and now he was facing them! She watched with delight as Jacques approached the tank.
Then the man paused, looking into the tank. "I just have to ask... Is this really okay with you?" He offered, looking Andrea straight in her eyes.
Andrea started to panic as Terrence looked from him to her, then back to him again. What was Jacques doing!? He was giving it all away! Andrea bobbed her head furiously, nodding and motioning with her bound claws to get Terrence out of the tank before anyone saw. She couldn't have witnesses to this; she didn't want to go down for murder! No matter how stringent laws were with dead transformees, premeditated changedeath was still murder in the first!
Terrence only looked at her with that same sad gaze, and for a moment Andrea thought she saw pity in his eyes. She wanted to laugh at the thought, scornfully dismissing what she'd glimpsed. Pity? Ha! Like a victim could ever pity the winner! No, Andrea was on top, right where she belonged.
And Terrence...
Andrea watched as Jacques pulled him from the tank, bringing him back into the restaurant's kitchen. Minutes passed, the longest minutes of Andrea's life. She just wanted Terrence to be cooked already!
Then the doors opened, and Jacques headed out, making a beeline for the tank. Andrea looked up to him hopefully, delighted as she saw he seemed unfazed. Perfect; there was no escape attempt, and once her husband was ready to be eaten, then she was on her way to freedom.
"And with that, everything has gone according to plan." Jacques said with a soft smile, standing by the tank as the doors to the kitchen opened once more. This time it was a young water, holding a magnificent lobster on his platter, dropping it off before Gina.
The girl cracked open its head first with undisguised relish, digging into the soft meat with gusto. For a minute, Andrea almost felt horrified at seeing her husband eaten in front of her. Then she remembered that once transformed, he'd become just an animal; so to Gina, that's all she was eating.
Andrea the lobster sat in a contented silence as her friend popped Terrence's arm from his body, cracking it open with undisguised relish. So ends what used to be a happy marriage, Andrea thought spitefully. Terrence had been a good man, but that deathchasing of his drove her to this... At least he died doing what he loved.
"Ah! Young miss, your dinner date has arrived." Jacques loudly announced, his voice scattering Andrea's thoughts.
Dinner date? The thought passed through Andrea's head, before she bobbed it excitedly. Good for Gina! She'd need to join her once she changed back, which would just be in a few hour's time. Then the two could hit the clubs like the old times, enjoying the single life.
Andrea looked to see the lucky man who was seeing her best friend, only for her blood to run as cold as ice. Somehow, impossibly, Terrence was walking towards the table, a grin on his face as he slipped into a seat beside the lobster tank.
"Hey honey." He said with a grin, leaning back as she moved to kiss him. "Ah-ah! Not yet, I don't want to be unfaithful to my dearly murderous wife." He said the last words in a sarcastic drawl, turning to face the lobster in the tank.
"Surprised to see me? It's a long story... But I'll make it short. Gina told me about your little plan, so we came up with a way for me to survive. Then we talked-you know, like regular people do-and she's convinced me to give up deathchasing. Not only that, I think she's my soulmate, which really brings me to my last point."
Terrence leaned closer towards the glass, a glare in his eyes despite the smile on his face. "First, I want a divorce. Second... I want this lobster right here." He said the second sentence loudly, tapping on the glass as he turned to face Jacques.
The lobster in question panicked, but she knew that her friend Jackie would get her out of this. After all, they'd known each other in high school! Right? After conspiring with him in the plot to kill her husband... Who was alive... Meaning... Oh.
Just as she'd dreaded, the restaurant's owner grinned delightedly. "Of course! You wouldn't believe how long I've waited for this! As a special treat, I shall personally prepare her for you."
Andrea's crustacean heart sank in her chest as the man reached his hand into the tank, plucking her scuttling body from the water. She wanted to tear free of her restraints and escape, but the damnable rubber bands were holding her too tightly!
Instead of the escape she had planned, all the little lobster could do was wriggle her legs as Jacques carried her into the kitchen, straight to a pot of boiling water. Her heart pounded in her chest, and she desperately wished that her lobster eyes had the capacity to cry, simply so she could express her horror and fear.
But her body proved insufficient to provide any release to her emotions, a stark contrast to the rictus grin on Jacques's face. "Just so you know, I have a lot of reasons for doing this." He said, smirking with anticipatory glee. "But above all, this is for you calling me 'Jackie'."
With that, he dropped her in the water, leaving Andrea to steam both figuratively and literally. THAT was the reason she was dying? What kind of dumb person would kill someone else for that? Even if she was a lobster now, that wasn't fair! She wasn't just some animal, no matter what the government had to say about it!
Her body proved incapable of expressing her thoughts, though it did begin to emit a high-pitched whistling as air started to escape through holes in her shell. Andrea kicked her legs more, but to her surprise, there wasn't really any pain, save the mental anguish of knowing her death was at hand.
Whether this was because of the Fox Serum or because of her alien body, she didn't know, but she did know one thing: thinking was getting harder. With a start, she realized that it was because her body was dying, but there was nothing she could do about it. None of her many limbs were responding to her thoughts, and her head was starting to get all fuzzy as her brain started to cook within her exoskeleton.
This wasn't how she wanted to go, wasn't how she wanted to die! Andrea tried to panic, but even emotion felt like a struggle for her. Her heartbeat slowed to a crawl as her organs began to simmer, and her eyes caught sight of her shell beginning to take on a crimson hue.
The last through to pass through her brain wasn't a curse born from anger or a plea for forgiveness. Instead, it was simply an observation: 'So that's what being cooked feels like.' With that, the plotting lobster expired, a loud and shrill sound filling her skull as the last air fled her body.
She never did find out how her husband had survived his cooking, nor would she ever know what he thought of her taste. But as Terrence would later claim, she was not only the best lobster he'd ever eaten, but a perfect aphrodisiac to consummate his first time with his soulmate.
