On the Kraken Isles, Meridin was an ordinary orphan at an ordinary orphanage. She didn't know why her parents got rid of her, maybe they were on the run or just didn't want an extra mouth to feed. Regardless, they chose the worst orphanage in the entire Isles to ditch her at.

She learned from a young age to always look after herself and to make sure to not share with anyone else, or they'll walk all over you. This ideology led to her becoming an excellent thief and somewhat of a kleptomaniac. She lived a carefree life among her fellow orphans, who eventually started a gang of their own, the street rats. They robbed from everyone they could and operated out of the orphanage because the management just did not care at all. Of course, she kept her favorite stuff to herself, but she sometimes shared with her fellow orphans. It was a charmed life, until one robbery changed her life.

It was an ordinary evening, the sun was setting and the crowds were rushing home to avoid the night shift. Meridin watched as she spied a wealthy man ordering crates into a warehouse with the Empire emblem. Tempted by the promise of a wealthy theft, she broke in that night and opened one of the boxes. The last thing she expected to find was a book, the cover had a language that she didn't know. She took the book back to the orphanage to examine it more. While most of the pages were blank, one had a picture of a seabird. Intrigued by the life-like picture, she touched the page, only for the picture to jump out of the book and right into her!

Shortly afterwards, she discovered that the book has magical properties. It could magically store anything in a suspended animation and be summoned back to the real world whenever she touched the image. A book that could store anything was a godsend to the kleptomaniac. She began to collect everything she could, weapons, large shipments, and anything that caught her attention.

She even used it to kidnap a woman. One day, a harlot made fun of the way she looked, so Meridin decided to try the book on humans. She opened the book towards her and watched as tendrils shoot out and coiled around the harlot. She tried to scream, but her entire head was mummified. When she was completely mummified, the book dragged her into the pages. Meridin looked at the page, and found the seemingly lifeless image of the mummified harlot. On occasions, she has been known to take her out of the book, still mummified, and play with her harlot toy. With the book, nothing in Meridins life could go wrong, until it did.

One day, a fellow street rat told her that there were an increased number of Empire men in town. Apparently, they were looking for some book that was stolen and they wanted it back. They already killed a rival gang and set fire to their hideout, making it clear they really wanted that book. Wanting to keep her friends safe, Meridin decided to leave the Kraken Isles. She snuck on a cargo ship heading to the Empire, a perfect place to find out why they want the book so bad. She had enough food and supplies as well as company, the bird she set free was still by her side.

In the Empire, she lived a life on the outskirts of civilization, never staying in one area for long. One day, she met a group of other women who also wanted to uncover the Empire's secrets. Still unsure but desperate for answers, she decided to join them for now, if they try to double-cross her, she can always add them to her soon expanding collection of mummified women.
