“Kelly, please stop!” Danny pleaded, popping out of the armoire once again. He looked at himself, dismayed, frustrated he was still a doll, and still a girl. This time, he came out as a cowgirl, with a silver star and boots, his hair made of yarn.
He had come to Kelly’s to study for midterms, finally getting a chance to be alone with the girl he’d been crushing on since he was eight. He knew he shouldn’t have done it, but he went snooping for a moment when she left to get some snacks. It was stupid, it was wrong, and now he was paying the price.
“Hmmm. Still not right. Try again, Dresser.”
“Wait, no!” Danny said as a now familiar invisible hand yanked him back inside the blue armoire filled with clothes and costume pieces. He felt it shift and slide new items onto him. Tights snug on his legs, satin gloves on his hands. A new dress.
The first time this happened, it was a complete shock. He peeked inside the big armoire because he thought he heard what he thought were muffled bells. Opening it up, he was pulled inside and changed. The first time into a green plush rag doll. Then, he was spit out, landing right in front of a less-than-surprised Kelly. “Really?” She had said, exacerbated.
This time, when he came out, his ankles gave way, not used to heels.
“Flapper doll, nice,” Kelly said, sitting on her bed, eating some chips.
“I already apologized for looking around your room!”
“I know, and I accept your apology. That’s not why I’m doing this.”
Danny looked up, confused. “You…then why?”
Kelly rolled her eyes, “You really don’t remember, do you?” She asked. Then, she spoke to the armoire again, “Try again, Dresser! Go nuts this time!”
“Gya!” Danny said as he was pulled back inside. This dresser…it had a mind, it could think. He had been in here enough times to understand that. It enjoyed dressing him up, making him look cute. This time, it went extra, and Danny came tumbling out as a…he wasn’t sure what. Orange tights, a green dress, his hair was braided and he felt fairy wings on his back, ears on his head, and a tail swishing behind him.
“Perfect! Thank you, Dresser!” Kelly said, moving over to her desk. “C’mon, Danny, we’ve procrastinated long enough.”
“Wh—what?”
“We need to study, remember? For the midterms?”
Danny was in disbelief. Somehow, the idea of studying while turned into a doll was more unbelievable than being a doll. “I can’t study like this!”
“Why not? You have a brain still, don’t you? And eyes and hands. C’mon, time’s wasting. You don’t want to fail the test, do you?”
“I…test…? But you turned me into a toy!”
“I didn’t, Dresser did. And being dollified is no excuse for skipping class.”
Did she really mean to send him to school tomorrow? To take the midterm? As a doll?!
“I can’t go to school like this! You have to turn me back!”
“Well, then you better remember what you did to me and apologize for that. Because until you do, I’m going to keep you as my rag fae cat doll girl.”
