"I'm sure you'll love America, son" an English father told his 2-year old son.
The little boy said nothing to his father. Instead, he only looked at him, eyes still red from the many tears he had shed. Though still very young, the green-haired boy had already learned quite a lot in his still very short life. He had been living with his father for as long as he could remember. He didn't remember his mother, nor did he know what happened to her, but he did know that his father loved him with all his heart. Yet he couldn't quite understand why his father would take him away from home. Away from his country, from his grandparents, from... her. All his father kept saying was that America will be a new start and that it'll be great.
"Aw come on, Ferb. Please wipe your tears. You'll see them again. I promise you that!" His father told him.
Though Ferb had never been much of a talker, there were some situations in which he just had to open his mouth. This was one of those.
"If I going to see dem again, why go 'way?"
Lawrence looked at his son. He knew that bringing Ferb over to America would be a difficult task but he couldn't just leave him behind with his grandparents. Besides, He was certain that Ferb would love America, never mind the friends he would make there.
"Mommy?"
"Yes sweety?" a mother said kindly to her daughter.
"Where Fewb go?" the little girl asked, holding a teddy-bear tightly in her hand by its paw.
"Sweety, I told you before, didn't I. He's off to another country with his father" The mother said, hoping her daughter wouldn't start crying again.
"Why?" her daughter asked, showing signs of tears forming in her eyes again. She hadn't known about her best friend departing for that long yet, but when she did, all she could do was cry. It was very difficult saying farewell to him, knowing that she might never see him again.
"His father had found a new job, honey."
"Why Fewb taken too?"
"Because a father can't just leave his son behind."
"When Fewb come back?" the girl asked, already crying again.
Her mother placed a hand on her daughter's shoulder, trying to comfort her, while she herself didn't even know the answer to this question.
"Goodnight Izzy!" Phineas waved his new best friend goodbye.
"Goodnight Phinny!" Isabella said, waving back.
Vivian and Linda looked at each-other, nodding in agreement. They both knew that at some point, these two were going to get together.
"Alright Phineas, you were allowed to stay awake a little longer because of Isabella visiting, but now you really need to go to sleep. I'll take you upstairs" Linda told her son. It was nice having company again other than her two children. Normally, she was way too busy taking care of them so an off-day like this was a rare occasion.
When Phineas was put into bed and a bed-time story was told, Phineas was already fast asleep, dreaming of his new friend. Linda was about to put Candace in her bed as well when the house-phone rang. She picked it up.
"Hello? This is Linda Flynn speaking."
"Linda!" A male voice said.
"Lawrence, hi!" Linda replied. "How are you doing?" Linda had met Lawrence when he was nearby on a business-trip to sell antiques. The two of them got along very well but neither of them had thought about a relation yet. Or at least, not openly.
"Oh I'm doing lovely. And how are you doing?"
"Oh I'm feeling just great! Phineas made his first steps today!"
"Wow! That certainly is good news!"
"So what did you call me for?"
"Well, I got a little surprise for you."
"A surprise? Really? What is it?" Linda was about to ask more when there was a knock on the door. "Oh, wait, there's someone at the door."
Linda walked up to the front door to open it and when she did, her heart raced.
"Good evening Linda, would you mind if we stay the night here?" It was Lawrence holding a sleeping Ferb in his arms along with a few suitcases.
Linda didn't know what to say. All she could do was stare at the man on the doorstep. On her face, there was an expression of bewilderment while in her head, she was very excited about him being here.
"L-Lawrence? How... When..." Linda stuttered.
"Well, since my job requires me to go to the US so wearily often, I've decided to live here instead. I've already found myself a small place, but it is a little too far away from the airport so... I was hoping you'd have an extra living-space for two" Lawrence answered.
Partly, Linda wanted this man to come right inside and make himself at home while on the other hand, she was uncertain. She chose the middle way: stuttering.
"I uh... well... uhm... too far huh?... If you have to... uh... "
"Oh, I understand I'm quite demanding right now. I didn't mean for that to happen" Lawrence said with a hint of laughter. "Well, I guess I'll try to find that place of mine then."
"N-no! You've... traveled for so long I'm sure and... doesn't little Ferb need a better bed than your arms?" Linda then said.
Lawrence didn't want to overcome Linda or take advantage of her, but there was no other option at the moment. "Well, I guess you're right, Linda. Could you uh, take him from me for a bit? I'll get my stuff inside. I'll just leave them in the hallway. I'll be gone again tomorrow!"
"Sure!" Linda said, taking a sleeping Ferb in her hands. "You know what, I'll place him in the extra bed in Phineas's room. I'm sure they'd get along just fine." After saying this, Linda went upstairs and into Phineas's room, making sure not to wake the toddlers up. She had almost put the little green-haired boy in his bed when someone called for her.
"Moooom?" It was Candace. In all excitement, Linda had forgotten all about her own daughter! She decided to finish off with Ferb quickly and then rushed over to her daughter's room to explain the situation.
"Fewb!" A little blond girl shouted.
Ferb looked around to see his best friend rushing towards him. This made him happy. He thought he'd never see her again!
"Fewb!" The girl shouted again.
He started getting up to run towards her as well. The sooner he got to her the better! He stood up with ease and started running in her direction but something seemed wrong. He didn't seem to be getting any closer to her at all. If anything, she seemed to be going further away!
"F-ew-b" he could hear her shout in the distance.
He couldn't believe what was happening. Some kind of force seemed to pull him away from her. He gathered all of his might and started running faster but to no avail. Soon, the girl was nothing more than a little dot in the distance. He started crying. This wasn't right! He wanted to get to her but couldn't! He just couldn't! It all made him incredibly sad to the point where he couldn't take in anymore and he shouted "EMILY!!!"
"Who Emily?" A cheery voice said.
Ferb didn't recognize this voice. He looked around him to find its source but found that he was completely alone.
"Hello?"
There it was again! Once more, Ferb looked around himself, only to find no-one around him at all. That is, until he looked back at where Emily had been just a little while ago. He saw that someone was forming there. A little boy with red hair.
"Are you 'wake?" the boy asked.
Awake? Was he asleep? Upon realizing this, he found that the world around him started deforming. It looked like a bedroom! Upon opening his eyes fully, he finally realized that what had just happened was all a dream.
"Ah, you 'wake! Who you? And who Emily?" the boy asked in a curious tone.
Ferb looked at the boy who had placed himself on the bed he was sleeping in. He didn't answer right away. He was still shaking a bit from the dream he'd just had but soon found that there was no harm in telling this boy his name. "Me Fewb..."
"Fewb? Me Phineas!" The little red-head said and, raising his hand in order to shake Ferb's.
Ferb was a little reluctant. He didn't even know this boy and right away, he seemed to want to make friends with him. He was about to shake his head when his father entered the room.
"Ferb, my boy! I see that you're awake again. And Phineas, at last I meet you" Lawrence said with a smile.
Phineas looked at the man with a question-mark above his head. Who was this man? He didn't know him but the man certainly seemed to know Phineas.
Soon, Linda entered the room as well. "Alright, Candace is off to see her new friend Stacy again. Now all we need to do is get your stuff to your new apartment, Law- oh look! Phineas discovered Ferb!"
"Linda, I think we should let these two get to know each-other a little better. Ferb doesn't know anyone here yet so it's best to make a start" Lawrence said.
"That's a great idea, Lawrence. We should get busy with your stuff in the meantime" Linda replied and soon, both grown-ups were off again.
Ferb inspected the red-head. He seemed to be a very enthusiastic and curious boy. Though Ferb only just met him, he already felt some kind of connection to the boy. The boy who had been talking non-stop since Lawrence and Linda left the room. Ferb listened intently to all the stories this boy told him. About Perry, his pet platypus and Isabella, his new friend. About Candace, his big sister and how much he loved her. About his plans of wanting to create incredible stuff to make the most out of every day and many more.
After Phineas had told him about his plan of finding out what Perry's noise meant, Ferb finally decided to talk again. "I wanna help, den you help me?... "
Phineas looked confused at the green-haired boy. Help him? Help him with what?
"I wanna go home! I miss Emily" Ferb continued.
"Oh! You no answer me qwestion! Who Emily?" Phineas asked cheerily.
"Emily like Isabella" Ferb answered.
Right away, Phineas knew what Ferb meant by this. Emily was to Ferb what Isabella was to him, even though Isabella had only just met Phineas. Phineas didn't need any time to think about it and said "Me help you! No need help me."
Ferb looked at him with big eyes. Phineas didn't want anything in return for his help? This was new for the green-haired boy.
Phineas then began thinking again, looking towards the ceiling while doing so. Ferb looked at him and thought something was wrong with him when suddenly, Phineas yelled out "Fewb! I know wha we gunna do today!"
Ferb looked at the cheerful boy who was now reaching out with his hand. Ferb hesitated for a bit but he also admired Phineas for his determination.
"Moom, I'm hoooome!... Mom?... Is there anybody home?..." Candace had just returned home to find an empty house, or so she thought. She was about to head for the phone to call her mother when she heard laughter coming from upstairs. Candace's initial thoughts were that Isabella had come over again today to play with Phineas but decided to take a peek all the same. She crept through the hallway towards Phineas's room and upon reaching it, she silently opened the door like she was a spy. What she saw in Phineas's room though startled her. In the room, there now stood a huge airplane made out of building blocks, lego bricks and other building material that Phineas owned.
"We awmost done, Fewb!" Phineas said.
Ferb looked at his new companion and instead of exclaiming his agreement, he simply gave Phineas a thumbs up.
"You no tawk much, Fewb" Phineas giggled.
Ferb had to agree, he didn't talk a lot, simply for the reason that he only rarely felt the need to say anything. He'd rather take action than talk about it. Phineas on the other hand loved talking, and wanted to make sure that everything worked properly before getting into action. Together, they made the perfect team like a Ying-Yang symbol.
Candace was too startled by the sight of all this that she didn't notice the door slowly opening, revealing her hiding-spot.
"Oh wook! Candy! Come see pwane!" Phineas said.
"Ph-Ph-Phineas!... What IS this!!" Candace said, still startled.
"Dis our pwane to bwing Fewb back to Emily!" Phineas said, cheerfully, after which Ferb waved shyly to the girl.
"But this... but that... how did..." Candace was at a loss for words. How could her baby brother have built such a thing?! Not to mention the fact that Phineas was actually planning on flying with this thing?!
"What wong? You no wike?" Phineas asked.
"Phineas, this is way too dangerous! This is built with toys and legos and... is that my comb?!" Candace was getting furious.
"Sowwy Candy, we must ask fiwst... " Phineas said, acknowledging his mistake.
"Oh no no no! Your cute eyes aren't going to work on me, mister! I will get mom right now!"
Just when Candace wanted to leave, Phineas called "Oh! You no met Fewb!"
Candace looked behind her. Fewb? Was that the name of the other boy? She was too busy with Phineas and his plane that she had ignored him. She decided to turn around once more and look at the little green-haired boy.
"You must be Fewb then" Candace said with a smile.
Ferb looked at her. Though she had been yelling just a minute ago, she was now being very nice to him. He found that she was a bit weird but knew that she would make a good friend as well, just like Phineas. Wait, he already considers Phineas to be a good friend? Apparently so...
"Weeell?" Candace asked.
"Fewb no tawk much!" Phineas then said.
"Oh, I see..."
"It's actually Few...R...b" Ferb then said.
"Oh, so it's Ferb! I thought something was wro-... wait you talked?" Candace said.
"Fewb fwom other land!" Phineas said.
"Oh right! You're from England right?" Candace asked, to which the boy nodded. "Well, welcome to America!" She then left the room, after which she remembered the giant airplane in Phineas's room. She thus decided to take mom to his room as soon as she was home again!
"Well Fewb, we done! You go back to Emily now!" Phineas exclaimed.
Ferb looked at him with big, thankful eyes. Even though they'd only met this morning, it already felt like they were big companions. He'd even made him a way home! Ferb walked towards Phineas and urged him to raise his hand. When Phineas did so, confusingly, Ferb high-fived it, sealing their bond. Phineas could only smile.
"Go inside pwane!" Phineas exclaimed joyfully.
Ferb did so, ready to see Emily again. Soon though, Phineas joined him in the plane, placing himself in the cockpit.
When Ferb looked at him questioningly, Phineas said "Me cuwious to Emily! Oh, we take Izzie too!"
Ferb smiled at him and tried to start the toy plane, only to find something was amiss. The plane was rumbling!
"Fewb? What wong?" Phineas asked.
Ferb acted quickly, he took Phineas by his hand and quickly climbed out of the cockpit with him. They had barely escaped the plane when it all started to crumble apart. The plane on which they had worked so hard this afternoon. The plane which Ferb was going to use to see Emily again. Now it was gone. Helplessness washed over Ferb.
"Fewb, you wescue me!" Phineas said.
Ferb looked at the red-head. It was true, he had rescued him.
Phineas, somehow, was overjoyed. Even though their creation had just crumbled apart, he felt happier than ever it seemed. Ferb found this amusing and it momentarily distracted him from his hopelessness. Then, Ferb looked at the mess they'd made. They'd either need to start building again or clean it up to start the next morning. Neither options were tempting since it'd just get destroyed again anyway. That's when Phineas noticed Ferb's saddened look.
"Fewb, dis was assident. Assident happen! We twy again and again! We will do it!" Phineas said, determined in his words.
Ferb couldn't believe what he was hearing. Even after this, Phineas was still certain that they'd succeed? He couldn't help but admire his new friend for this. He then stared at the red-head as if he wanted to say 'so what do we do now?'.
"Now we cwean up! It alweady too wate! Sowwy Fewb, tomowwow!" Phineas said.
Just as he was about to pick up some of the lego-bricks that lay scattered around on the floor, something strange happened. A strange beam of light lit up the room and it blinded the two little boys for a few seconds. Both of them were hit by a mixture of confusion, fear and excitement. For a second, Ferb thought he heard stuff... moving?
Finally, the strange beam of light had left the room, leaving the two boys in bewilderment.
Phineas was the first to try and open his eyes again and to his amazement, he found that his entire room had been cleaned up! Not a single building block lay on the floor! There were no more lego bricks under his bed! It looked as if everything had somehow put itself back in their respective boxes and crates!
"Ugh, I should really work on my aim" A certain future evil scientist told himself after firing his clean-up-your-room-inator which, of course, only had enough power for one shot.
That's when Candace entered the room, followed by both Linda and Lawrence.
"See mom! I told you they built a plane!" Candace said.
"Candace, if they built a plane as big as you say, then where is it?" Linda asked her daughter.
Candace was confused. How could she not see such a big and obvious plane? "What are you talking about mom! It's right there... HUH?!" Candace gasped upon looking in the room herself. Where the plane had had just stood, were now just the two little toddlers, just sitting there as if they hadn't touched anything all day. "But... that's impossible! It was right here!"
"Oh Candace, I'm sure it was here." Linda reassured her daughter, secretly thinking that her daughter had overreacted a little and that the boys had simply already cleaned up their small plane.
Candace walked away again, thinking how on earth that big plane could have vanished so easily!
While Candace was still in a bemused state, Lawrence made his way over to his son.
"Well, it's time to go, my boy. We will move to our new house!" He said.
Ferb looked at his father with a shocked look. He had taken him away from Emily already and now he wanted to take him away from Phineas too?! He wasn't going to let this happen again! Ferb then walked over to Phineas and stood behind him.
"What's wrong, Ferb? You don't want to go?" Lawrence asked, slightly confused.
Ferb simply shook his head.
Lawrence then got the hint. "I'll be right back, son. Linda, can I talk to you in the hallway?"
"Uhm... sure?" Linda said and soon, the two boys were left alone again.
"What you think gunna happen?" Ferb asked Phineas.
"Dunno. Maybe dey let you stay!" Phineas told Ferb. Both boys liked this idea.
Out on the hallway, Lawrence told Linda what he believed was going on with Ferb which was surprisingly accurate and Linda could only nod in agreement every now and then.
"So, you're basically asking me to let Ferb stay here with me for the time being?" Linda asked.
"Well, yes, if that is okay with you of course." Lawrence said, showing a small sign of blushing.
Linda, also blushing a bit, thought about this before giving her future fiancée a definite yes!
"Thank you very much! I'm sure Ferb will love this!" Lawrence said and he was about to give Linda a hug when he realized what he was doing and he simply gave her a handshake instead, making both adults blush. Lawrence then asked "If there's anything I can do in return...?"
"Well, there is something..." Linda said nervously.
"Good news, my boy. You can stay here for a little while longer!" Lawrence said, entering the room.
Ferb couldn't believe his ears. He could stay! This left him with mixed feelings. He didn't know whether he should be happy or not. On one hand, he was happy that he could stay with his new friend Phineas but on the other hand, he wondered why he couldn't have stayed in England in the first place, while he also knew he was going to miss his father.
"Don't worry my boy, I'll come and visit you again very often!" Lawrence said, while secretly finishing his sentence in his head with 'and try to get Linda and me tickets to that Love Händel concert'.
"Yay! Fewb can stay!" Phineas yelled. "We be wike bwothers!"
Ferb was happy to hear this and Phineas's exclamation made him even happier. He walked over towards his father and gave his legs a big hug, after which he looked at his father with questioning eyes.
"What is it now, son?" Lawrence asked, chuckling a bit.
"I want you to wwite a letter!"
"Emily! I got a surprise for you!" Mrs. Kinney told her daughter.
"A suwpwise?" Emily asked. The little girl had been crying for very long periods ever since Ferb left with only small breaks in between for eating or sleeping (and even at those times it went horrible!). A surprise was sure to get her mood up again.
"Yes, I got you a letter!" her mother told her.
Emily was a little disappointed. What good would a letter do? She couldn't even read it!
"... from Ferb!"
Suddenly, Emily's eyes widened in shock and she was all ears again.
Her mother had to giggle at this. She sat down next to Emily's bed and she began reading out the letter to her.
Dear Emily,
How are you doing? I am doing really good, but I also miss you a lot.
I met a boy here in America called Phineas. Phineas wants to help me so that we can see each-other again.
This last line was enough for Emily to be filled with hope again. Ferb was trying to come back again! The rest of the letter was filled with stories of what had happened that first day that Ferb woke up in Phineas's bedroom. From the sad dream he'd had about her, to the strange beam of light that had cleaned up the room again. All of this made Emily happy. She was certain that she and Ferb were going to see each-other again now! She didn't know when or where, but she did know that it was going to happen.
That was my first day in America. I wish you were here!
Love, Ferb.
Emily then started to cry again but this time, they were tears of joy.
