Yesterday, while driving by Diamond Lake, I had to swerve to avoid hitting a duckling. It was a close thing. He actually rolled due to the wind.
I turned around and went back to make sure that he was OK. Unfortunately, there was no sign of his parents or siblings. He was freshly hatched (still had the egg tooth,) so there is no way that he should have been out of sight of his family.
We raise poultry, and have raised ducks before, so I picked him up and gave him to my middle son to hold. Meanwhile, we had places to go and things to do. We took a couple side trips for the sake of little woody.
The first was to the hunting and fishing museum. Unfortunately, it was closed. So much for the idea of passing little woody off to the museum to raise.
So, we bought some high protein chick starter (feed,) and ordered half a dozen ducklings to act as companions. Flock type birds don't like to be alone, so I guess we are raising ducks again.
heh. Ducks are fun, anyhow.
I had guessed that he was either a mallard or a wood duck, and a quick google search seemed to indicate that he is a wood duck.
I tried to talk my wife into letting me order some guinea fowl and pea fowl, but she doesn't like the charming sounds that those wonderful birds make. Oh well...
