Resolution: To Find Love (Even If It Means Becoming Someone New)

I had exactly two things in my life: work and my cat, Mr. Whiskers. Romance? That was filed somewhere between "impossible" and "not happening this decade." So when my best friend, Carly, dragged me to a New Year's Eve speed-dating event, I thought she was joking.

“You’ll love it!” Carly insisted, her grin as wide as the Hudson River. “New year, new you!”

“New year, same introvert,” I grumbled, shoving my hands deeper into my coat pockets as we trudged through the snow. “Why are you doing this to me? Don’t you have... lesbian things to do tonight?”

Carly rolled her eyes, tossing her fiery red curls. “I want you to find love, Todd. Just because I’m a woman of refined taste doesn’t mean I can’t cheer for my best friend. And who knows? Maybe some magical midnight moment will change your life.”

If only I knew how literal that would turn out to be.

We walked into the venue, a cozy little bar decked out in glittering gold and silver streamers. I felt like a fish out of water, floundering in a sea of laughter and clinking glasses. Carly, on the other hand, glided through the crowd like a party goddess, tossing out compliments and hugs like confetti.

“Todd, relax,” she said, thrusting a drink into my hand. It was pink, bubbly, and had a tiny umbrella in it. “This is going to be fun.”

“You’re fun,” I muttered, taking a sip. It tasted like strawberries and stardust. “I’m awkward.”

“Drink more of that. You’ll loosen up,” Carly said with a wink, and then the speed-dating bell rang.

The first few rounds were disastrous.

“So, uh... do you like cats?” I asked a blonde with glasses, who immediately grimaced.

“Not really.”

“Cool, cool,” I said, taking another awkward sip of my drink. “Me neither.”

Lie. I loved cats.

By the sixth round, I was sweating bullets and regretting every life choice that had led me to this moment. Carly caught my eye from across the room and gave me a thumbs-up. She was chatting animatedly with a tall brunette who looked like she had walked out of a fashion magazine. Of course, Carly was having the time of her life.

As the clock approached midnight, I slumped into a chair, feeling utterly defeated. My drink was nearly empty, and I swirled the last few drops around, trying not to feel like a total loser.

“Hey, you okay?” Carly slid into the seat next to me, her cheeks flushed with laughter. She was holding another pink drink. “You look like you need a resolution.”

“My resolution is to never do this again,” I said, deadpan.

Carly laughed and clinked her glass against mine. “Come on, Todd. Midnight’s almost here. Make a wish.”

“Fine,” I said, lifting my glass. “I wish to find love next year.”

The words felt heavy and ridiculous on my tongue, but I gulped down the last of the drink anyway.

Midnight came with a roar of cheers and the explosion of confetti cannons. I stood there, clapping half-heartedly, when a strange warmth spread through me. It started in my chest and radiated outward, like I’d swallowed sunshine.

“What the—” I gasped, clutching the table. My body felt... weird. My shirt tightened across my chest, my jeans pinched my hips, and my voice cracked like a teenager’s. “Carly?”

“Holy—” Carly’s jaw dropped. “Todd, what’s happening to you?”

“I don’t know!” I yelped, though my voice now sounded smoother, lighter. Feminine. I stumbled toward the bar’s mirrored wall, and my reflection stopped me cold.

Staring back at me was a woman. A gorgeous, absolutely stunning woman with thick, glossy hair, sparkling eyes, and curves that could start traffic jams. She was wearing my clothes, but they fit her like a second skin.

“Is this... me?” I whispered, touching my face. My hands were smaller, my fingers delicate. I ran them through my hair, which now cascaded down to my shoulders in silky waves.

Carly burst into laughter, doubling over. “Oh my God, Todd, you’re hot!”

“Not helping!” I hissed, turning to her. “What did you put in that drink?”

“Nothing! I mean, I think?” Carly wiped her eyes. “Okay, focus. You’re a woman now. We can fix this.”

The rest of the night was a blur. Carly whisked me out of the bar before anyone could ask too many questions, stuffing me into her car like a tipsy bridesmaid. Her laughter filled the tiny space as I fumbled with the seatbelt, now awkwardly too loose around my smaller frame.

“Carly, this isn’t funny!” I snapped, but my voice betrayed me, coming out like a sulky soprano. Even my irritation sounded cute.

“It’s a little funny,” she said, biting her lip to stifle her giggles as she started the car. “I mean, come on. You look like the love child of a Victoria’s Secret model and an angel.”

I glared at her, but it must not have been very intimidating, because she burst into laughter again.

We ended up back at her apartment, a cozy little space filled with Carly’s eclectic mix of vintage posters and houseplants. I paced nervously, tugging at my too-tight clothes while she opened her laptop on the coffee table, furiously typing away.

“Okay,” she said, scrolling through results. “Let’s see... ‘spontaneous gender transformation’? Nope. ‘Magical cocktails’? Huh. There’s a forum about cursed drinks.”

“Great. Sign me up for the support group,” I muttered, crossing my arms. The motion felt strange; my arms pressed against the unfamiliar weight on my chest, making me pause. “Carly, why do I have boobs now?”

“Good question,” she said, looking up at me with wide eyes. “Big ones, too. Like... really nice. Honestly, if I didn’t know better, I’d say you paid for them.”

I groaned and sank onto her couch, burying my face in my hands. “This is insane.”

“Insane? Yes. But also, Todd...” She hesitated, and I peeked through my fingers to see her studying me intently. “You’re still you. And... you’re kind of gorgeous.”

I groaned louder, flopping back against the cushions. “That’s not helping.”

Carly smirked, setting the laptop aside. “It wasn’t meant to.”

After lending me an oversized T-shirt to replace my now-too-tight button-down, Carly sat cross-legged on the couch, sipping her tea and sneaking glances at me as I paced the room.

“You know,” she said, her voice casual, “I’ve been thinking.”

“Uh-oh.” I shot her a wary look. “That’s never good.”

She grinned, setting her mug down. “What if this is the universe’s way of giving you a fresh start? I mean, let’s face it, Todd—you weren’t exactly thriving as a dude.”

“Gee, thanks,” I muttered, tugging at the hem of the shirt. It barely reached mid-thigh now, leaving my legs exposed.

“I’m serious!” Carly stood, walking over to me. She was still taller than me—even in flats—and I suddenly felt... small. Vulnerable. “You’re beautiful now. You could have anyone you want.”

“I don’t want anyone,” I shot back, though my voice lacked conviction. “I just want to go back to normal.”

Carly stepped closer, her gaze softening. “What if this is your new normal?”

Her words hung in the air, heavy with possibility. Before I could respond, she reached out and tucked a strand of my hair behind my ear—a simple, intimate gesture that sent shivers down my spine.

“Carly...” My voice wavered, and she smiled, her hand lingering on my cheek.

“Relax, Todd,” she murmured, her tone playful. “I’m just admiring the new you.”

That’s how I ended up standing in front of her full-length mirror, feeling more exposed than I ever had in my life.

“Off with the shirt,” Carly said, her hands on her hips.

“Excuse me?” I squeaked, clutching the hem like a lifeline.

“Relax, it’s just us girls,” she teased, winking. “Besides, don’t you want to see what you’re working with?”

“Not particularly,” I muttered, my cheeks burning. But Carly’s expectant gaze left me no choice. With a deep breath, I pulled the shirt over my head and dropped it to the floor.

Carly’s eyes widened as she took me in, and I instinctively wrapped my arms around my chest. “Stop staring,” I mumbled.

“Sorry, sorry,” she said quickly, though her gaze lingered. “It’s just... wow. You’re... wow.”

“Is that a good ‘wow’ or a bad ‘wow’?” I asked, feeling more self-conscious by the second.

“Definitely good.” She stepped closer, her fingers brushing my arm. “You’re stunning, Todd. Like... impossibly stunning. It’s not fair.”

Her words sent a strange mix of embarrassment and pride swirling through me. I dropped my arms hesitantly, letting her take in the full picture. Her gaze traveled from my face to my shoulders, down to my now-delicate waist and curvier hips. Finally, her eyes settled on my chest, and I swore I saw her blush.

“Well?” I prompted, my voice high-pitched with nervousness.

“Well,” she said, her voice lower than usual, “if I didn’t already know you, I’d be asking for your number right now.”

What happened next felt like a blur, a combination of awkward laughter, teasing remarks, and charged silences. Carly kept finding excuses to touch me—a hand on my arm here, a playful nudge there—and each time, my pulse quickened.

At one point, she grabbed my hand and pulled me toward her bedroom. “Come on, let’s get you comfortable.”

“I’m fine,” I protested, though my heart was racing.

“No, you’re not,” she said firmly, sitting me on the edge of her bed. “You’ve been through a lot tonight. You need to relax.”

She knelt in front of me, her hands resting lightly on my knees. The touch sent a jolt of electricity through me, and I stared down at her, unsure of what to say.

“Carly, I...” My voice trailed off as she looked up at me, her eyes dark with something I couldn’t quite place.

“Shh,” she murmured, leaning closer. “You talk too much.”

Before I could argue, her lips brushed against mine—a soft, tentative kiss that quickly deepened. I melted into her touch, my body responding instinctively as her hands slid up my thighs.

When she pulled back, we were both breathless. “You okay?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

“Yeah,” I managed, my cheeks flaming. “More than okay.”

Her smile was pure mischief as she stood, pulling me to my feet. “Good. Because tonight, Todd... or whatever you want to call yourself now... you’re mine.”

The rest of the night was a whirlwind of sensations. Carly guided me with a mix of tenderness and teasing, her confidence a stark contrast to my awkward fumbling. She laughed when I tripped over my own feet, kissed me senseless when I tried to apologize, and whispered things that made my face burn.

By the time we collapsed into her bed, we were both stripped bare—literally and figuratively. I felt exposed in every sense of the word, but Carly’s gentle touches and soft murmurs of reassurance eased my nerves.

“You’re beautiful,” she said, her fingers tracing patterns on my skin. “I hope you know that.”

I didn’t respond, too overwhelmed by the moment. Instead, I curled into her, feeling small and safe in her arms.

For the first time in years, I felt like I belonged.
