The afternoon sun streamed into "Huddle's Sports Bar," its golden rays catching the dust motes in the air and illuminating the room, filled with the sounds of cheering fans and chattering friends. The big game of the season was on, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement.
Among the regulars were Bruce and Mitch, college buddies turned work colleagues. They sat at their usual corner booth, a sanctified spot with the best view of the massive screen. Bruce, a tall man with sharp features and a permanent smirk, worked as an advertising executive. His job entailed high-stress pitches and late nights, making him jaded and quick to employ his caustic wit. His team's jersey – bright and bold – was worn like armor, and he wouldn't miss an opportunity to flaunt every touchdown they made.
Opposite him was Mitch, his stark contrast in every sense. With soft blue eyes and curly blonde locks, he emanated an air of patience and understanding, no doubt a byproduct of his job as a high school counselor. The Buffalo Bills cap sat atop his head, a testament to the years of family tradition of supporting the team.
"Looks like the Bills might just be settling their bill early today!" Bruce remarked, pointing to the screen as his team scored yet another goal. "I mean, look at that defense, Mitch. It's practically non-existent."
Mitch chuckled, "It's just the first half, Bruce. Football's a game of surprises, and the Bills are known for their comebacks."
"Your optimism is endearing," Bruce smirked, sipping his drink. "But face it, your team's been more 'miss' than 'hit' lately."
Mitch rolled his eyes, "And your trash talk has been more trash than talk."
The banter was an old dance, one they'd been doing for years. Despite the jabs, there was an undercurrent of mutual respect. They'd been roommates during their college years, their apartment a chaotic blend of both team's memorabilia. Their shared history made every football season a nostalgic event, replete with memories of bets lost and won, and crazy dares fulfilled.
Seeing the dejected look on Mitch's face as halftime neared, Bruce leaned in, mischief in his eyes. "How about raising the stakes, buddy? If the Bills lose," he drawled, "you become my girlfriend till season's end."
Mitch looked up, a grin slowly forming. "Oh, I see. Dreaming about dating me? But alright, if by some freak accident the Bills do lose, I'm in. And if they win?"
Bruce pretended to shudder dramatically. "Then, heaven help me, I'll be your 'lady' for the season. But remember, it was your idea to date me."
Shaking hands amidst their laughter, the two settled into the second half.
