Derek woke up to a morning that would be unlike any other. As he rummaged through his drawer, his eyebrows furrowed in confusion. His underwear was missing. His mother, Claudia, exasperatedly handed him a pair of his sister's underwear. "You've been lazy with your laundry, and now you have to face the consequences. You'll wear these for today."
"But, Mom! This is ridiculous!" Derek exclaimed.
"Then maybe you'll remember to do your laundry next time," Claudia replied, the finality in her voice silencing him.
Later, as Derek left for school, his mother stumbled upon a peculiar website named “Desires Fulfilled Enterprises” while sipping her morning coffee. In a fleeting moment of exasperation, she typed, “I wish I had two daughters. Things would be so much simpler.” She chuckled and closed the tab, thinking nothing of it.
At school, Derek's day began uncomfortably, the alien feeling of his sister's underwear a persistent annoyance. But the discomfort soon transformed into sharp pinching sensations. He tried adjusting, but the feeling persisted and was soon accompanied by an odd sensation around his chest.
In history class, Derek’s voice cracked as he read out loud. He cleared his throat, but when he spoke again, it was unmistakably higher.
"Going through a second puberty, Darcy?" teased Ben, his best friend.
"Darcy? It's Derek!" He retorted, but his voice was met with quizzical looks.
Lunch was even more bewildering. He sat with his usual group, but everyone addressed him as Darcy, discussing a weekend sleepover he had no memory of.
"Hey Darcy, remember the chick flick marathon we had last Saturday?" giggled Sarah.
"What are you talking about, Sarah? It’s Derek!" he protested.
She looked confused. "Umm, you feeling okay, Darcy?"
By gym class, Derek noticed the budding outline of a bust under his shirt. His athletic build was becoming leaner, his face softer. His shoes felt oversized, and his jeans hugged his reshaping hips.
Desperate, Derek dialed his mother during the break. "Mom, something's happening. Everyone's calling me Darcy. I look... different."
Claudia, panic evident in her voice, replied, "Oh God. That website... Darcy? But you're Derek. Come home, now!"
Derek dashed home. As he entered, his once familiar room had transformed. Pink curtains, dresses in the closet, and a desk covered in makeup. His baseball posters replaced by pop stars. His computer opened to a social media profile of ‘Darcy,’ with hundreds of photos documenting a life he hadn’t lived.
His mother rushed in, holding a family photo album. Both flipped through it in disbelief. Birthdays, holidays, every memory of Derek was now replaced with Darcy's. Tears welled in their eyes.
"I made a wish, Derek... I mean, Darcy. I didn’t think it would—"
"You wished for this?!" Derek, or Darcy, shouted, her voice high-pitched and filled with anguish.
"It was just a silly moment. I never thought it'd be real," Claudia sobbed.
Darcy’s mind raced, struggling to make sense of the conversations, her changing body, and her unfamiliar surroundings. She stumbled backward, collapsing onto a bed that was now covered in floral sheets, a room that felt both alien and hauntingly familiar. The weight of the day’s events pressed down on her, rendering her motionless as she lay there, trying to reconcile with her new reality.
