You heard the whispering behind the book stacks. Someone trying to get your attention. You made your way over to the shelf and pulled the large book down. “Finally,” you hissed seeing the face of agent Greene. You were sure that was a fake name but it didn't matter he was still your only agency contact at this point.
“Nice to see you too,” he said with a smile and a slight leer. The same slight leer you had seen from most of the male students on campus.
“Yo perv, eyes up here,” you said, your voice an angry whisper but still sounding so girly to you.
He shuddered a bit embarrassed. “Sorry,” he said sheepishly.
“Whatever this wasn't my idea of - “ You started down your well-practiced line complaining.
“ Yes. yes. We have all heard it, you didn't want to be a student, you thought you would be a professor. Come on now though be serious, how was a 38-year-old garbage worker-”
“Sanitation engineer” You cut him off.
“GARBAGE MAN, he said more strenuously but not louder. “Supposed to be a professor, you didn't even go to college”
“Yes fine, but why not a jock or even a frat boy. I could have easily spent a few weeks like that” you said, your voice squeaking a bit as you tried not to sound like a cartoon mouse.
“Well think about it, frat parties have cops, a lot, or at least the potential for it, and jocks, well we wanted no chance of you showing up on ESPN,” he said.
You shuffled around, “but why a girl? Why a freshman girl?”
He smiled, “well that was a genius idea, We figured stashing you as a timid little co-ed would encourage you to enter the world more slowly, I mean you are dressing conservatively not drawing attention to yourself. You are far more likely to be cautious in public areas and quite frankly, we figured it would throw Eels off” He was referring to Marco “Eels” Flattery the Irish mob kingpin who you saw shoot an FBI agent in the head.
“Fine,” you say, brushing a long brunette strand of hair behind your ear. “It has been 2 months though, any update”
He looked down “Yeah here is the thing, there is no evidence linking Eels to the scene besides your testimony and he even was able to produce an alibi. So we can proceed with the case right now, it could be a long, long time before we can move. So I wouldn't look to be going home for a long, long time.”
Your heart leaped into your throat, “how long?” You ask
“Have you thought about your major Grace?”
