Call of Duty is no stranger to truly bizarre crossovers, from Snoop Dawg to The Predator to beloved cartoon character Richard M. Nixon, the franchise is as liberal with its use of guest stars as Mortal Kombat. But this wasn't always the case. In fact, the very first crossover that Call of Duty ever attempted nearly killed the cameo conga-line before it even started.
While Call of Duty has purported to be intended for gamers 17 and up since the release of CoD: Modern Warfare back in 2007 (which, by the way, will itself turn 17 in less than a month!), it's always been a very open secret that Call of Duty's fanbase tends to skew significantly younger. Countless videos abound of 12 year old children screaming like demons and swearing like sailors after getting bullied by 15 year olds recording their monitor with a $60 Nikon, and it seems the folks at Activision were not only aware of this trend but actively sought to capitalize on it with the launch of Call of Duty: Black Ops in November of 2010, where the game was intended to launch with 3 bonus "zombies" missions. A wholly in-house "Kino Der Toten", "Five" for the older cartoon fans that grew up with the zany antics of the "Cold War Crew" with characters like the aforementioned Nixon, the proto-Cobra Commander Castro, the debaucherous JFK, and Robert McNamara because I guess they were over budget and the rights for him could be tossed in as a freebie with JFK.
The third and final zombies mission, however, would have been aimed at a much younger audience of cartoon loving kids, a scrapped mission called "Call of Adventure: Zombie Time"
Based on the popular Cartoon Network show "Adventure Time", which released in April of that same year, Call of Adventure: Zombie Time" (ZT) would have seen the classic Zombies protagonists (Dempsey, Nikolai, Richtofen, and the other one) transported through time and space to the Land of Ooo, in a far flung post apocalyptic future where series main antagonist "The Lich" is on the verge of completing his quest to wipe out all life on earth. Only the Candy Jar, an autocratic police state ruled by Princess Bubblegum, remains in opposition, and is quickly being overrun by the undead and rotting denizens of the former Candy Kingdom.
Only Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, the series' lead characters, can stop the Lich, but they've been frozen by a zombified Ice King and held as trophies in his base at the outskirts of the Candy Jar. Knowing her own candy soldiers will be bitten and converted well before they could ever reach the base, Princess Bubblegum has plucked 4 human warriors with a penchant for zombie killing from another dimension to rescue Finn, promising them a safe return to their dimension if they complete this rescue. For added incentive, Princess Bubblegum has infected the 4 with a slow-acting version of the virus herself, which turns them into candy-human hybrids that can survive dismemberment (albeit with reduced effectiveness like lower walk speed, increased reload time, reduced vision, etc) and glue their bodies back together with (reskinned medkits) fondant, but will in time render them just another 4 mindless zombies.
If all of this sounds absolutely crazy, you're not alone. While the executives at Cartoon Network knew that Call of Duty was popular, they didn't actually know what it was. When these executives were shown preliminary footage of what they'd signed on for, with playable Nazis and offensive Russian and Japanese stereotypes and enough body horror to make John Carpenter blush, they threw every lawyer they had at the problem until all mention of ZT had been wiped from the records. But, that which is dead can never die, and several screenshots and design documents remain!
