The video started out looking over a rather plain looking bedroom. There was a bed with navy sheets in the center of the frame, the glimpses of a closet to one side, and the side of a windowsill on the other. The camera appeared to be situated on a desk, and the back wall was completely barren of any pictures or decorations.
Off camera, the sound of a woman muttering to herself could barely be picked up. “Come on… Just go out there and do it… How hard can it be?… Just sell yourself…” There were other such encouraging words mixed in, but they were basically incomprehensible. Eventually though, the woman took a deep breath, and walked into frame.
The woman was rather unassuming and young looking. With no frame of reference in her room to compare to, it was difficult to tell if she were that tall or short. She had on a plain, gray t-shirt and blue jeans. Her face was rather plain, hazel color eyes, well-trimmed eyebrows, the bare minimum amount of make-up to have a natural look to her face. About the only thing that was abnormal was that she had an absolutely wild mane of brown hair.
She gave a smile, the corners of her lips wavering a bit, “H-Hello there everyone. My name’s Paxton, a-and I want to compete on ANGA.”
Her smile was starting to thin, and despite her best efforts Paxton’s eyes gave away how she was truly feeling inside. “Back- Background… So, So my- So my background is- Well,” she gulps, “So my background with magic is- Well, I don’t have much experience with magic all that much. I’m just… just an intern at an insurance company, so I mostly just get everyone coffee.” She chuckled, trying to cut her fears, but the dead air afterwards only brought seemed to make her even more anxious.
“S-so yeah,” She was doing her best now to look anywhere but at the camera, “I mean, I went through, like, the same basic magic training most people get. Took a couple of basic magic courses in college… just like everyone else…” Her spirits seemed to only be tanking by the moment.
“I-I mean, I can do this,” she looked at the camera, a gleam of hope appearing in her eyes, she held out her hand, and above it, a tiny ball of fire appeared. The ball circled in the air, following the outline of her hand before returning to the center of her hand, jumping up and down excitedly in the air before seeming to almost turn itself inside out, becoming a tiny ball of water.
The smile in her face had returned, slightly more subtle than before, but without any of the wavering it previously had, “Conjuration probably was the one time in school I really had a good time,” Paxton watched as the ball of water descended down to touch her hand, circling around her fingers as she held her hand up so others could watch. “Just the concept of creating something from nothing… I still can’t believe what magic lets us do sometimes…”
Her eyes briefly looked away from the water drop’s journey, glancing back towards the camera. When her eyes made contact, her concentration broke, the water droplet vanishing into thin air as she looked away from the camera, blushing heavily. “B-but I’m sure you’ve probably seen Conjuration stuff a million times before… I mean, so many people audition for ANGA. And plus my stuff was so tiny…” Paxton’s mood seemed to hit an all time low, the life seeming to vanish completely from her eyes.
“A-Anyways… As for why I want to be on ANGA,” she gulped again, “Umm… Why I want to be on ANGA… Why… Why? Why do I want to be on ANGA?” Paxton’s mood visibly spiraled down, as she took a more hunched seat and held her head in her hands.
“Everyone else has such amazing reasons for why they want to be on ANGA, so why can’t I figure out just one? Do I even want to be a Magician’s Assistant? Two years out of college and all I’ve managed to accomplish is becoming the coffee girl and an insanely expensive piece of paper!” Paxton was now actively sobbing, her head hidden underneath the desk.
“Maybe it’s just because I’m so sick and tired of living the same day of my life, over and over again! But I bet even that wouldn’t be a good enough reason to get on the show! Why did I even think making this would be a good idea? They’re just going to pick an actual assistant, or someone who can bend time! Or more likely a friend of a friend of one of the producers!”
Paxton sat up quickly. She had clearly been crying, the small amount of eyeliner she had been wearing now simply black streams down her face. Her face seemed emotionless.
“I’m sorry for wasting your time, just forget I even auditioned.” Paxton reached behind the camera, closing the laptop it was attached to, and ending the video.
