Bernice opened her eyes in shock. Standing in front of her appeared to be two headless bodies, exactly the same. She quickly closed her eyes again.

Scrunching her face, she opened her eyes more slowly. The two bodies morphed into one as her vision adjusted, and the distinct features of a familiar face smiled back at her.

    “Nate?”

Nathaniel had been Bernice’s friend since kindergarden, and her neighbor even longer.

“Good! You’re awake! I already talked this over with your body, but basically, I was experimenting with the effect of mirrors on this ‘safe laser’ I made. One of them must have accidentally shot out of my window to your house, severing your head. The plan is, I’m going to transfer your consciousnesses over to a clone of my body. Then, when my machines have rebuilt your body, we can transfer your consciousness back.”

The explanation out of the way, a new question arose, “Wait, how did you talk to my body? She’s deaf.”

“That’s what the second head is for.” Grabbing Bernice and turning her head 90 degrees, Bernice came face-to-face with … herself.

“Hey,” her former body responded, “Would you mind if I stayed as your body?”
