‘Huh?’ Bernice’s body woke with a start. She swore she felt something touch her in her sleep. She looked around the bed, only to see Maple sleeping peacefully. She checked the time. It was about 11:30.

She surveyed the room, only to realize what was off. ‘Where’s my head?’ Her body got up, moving quietly as not to wake Maple or her grandma.

‘Bernice?’ She called out telepathically, ‘Where are you?’ The lack of response was worrying.

She began shuffling the clothes strewn around the room, trying to find her head. ‘Oh no. Where is it?’ she thought.

Having scoured her room, she headed downstairs. She had no idea what she was going to do, but right now she had to consider her options.

Grabbing her cellphone off the kitchen table, she began texting her new friends about her predicament, ignorant of the sounds coming from behind her…

Suddenly, a stranger grabbed her from behind, tying her arms and legs together and covering her neck stump with a strange black cloth, blinding her ability to see.

“Target secured sir!” The stranger communicated back to headquarters.

“Good.” The apparent leader responded, “Hurry back. The Target’s head has already arrived.”
