‘Okay Bernie, don’t freak out. Nobody’s looking … just a normal high schooler walking off to school … You’ll be fine.” Bernice was on her way to her school. She was holding her head over her neck stump, pretending to cup them over a pair of head phones. It was very annoying, as it forced her to awkwardly move her arms when she tried to look around.

She was coming in at the most busy part of the morning, with students rushing reach their classes in time. Thankfully, her first class was right near the front door, so she managed to sneak into her first class just before the bell rang.

“Okay class,” her homeroom teacher said, “get your stuff out.” Everyone began shuffling their stuff. “Bernice, headphones off.”

    “Ummm … I can’t.” Bernice responded.

“Bernice, it’s class rules, no cellphones, hats, or headphones. Now take them off.”

“I don’t think you want that.”

    “And why?”

“Because … if I do my head will fall off.”

“… Bernice, if you don’t take them off in the next ten seconds, I’m going to send you to the principal’s office.”

Bernice’s chance to avoid a scene was over, as the whole class's eyes stared at her.
