Ever since i had began working at the lab, Dave had been there. He was a ray of solace in a desolate sea of darkness. He was the only one who accepted me, disability and all. It is because of him that I am able to record these thoughts in a special journal that records through microphone rather than through writing. But maybe I should start from the beginning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
My name is Laura Hennings. I was 25 years old when I faced my first bout with cancer. Thankfully, the chemo had worked, but that’s not to say it didn’t take a huge strain on my parent’s budget. To help support them and myself, I began looking for a higher paying job than the laboratory I had previously worked in. The only other major science company in my town was Droenin Electronics, a massive robotics conglomerate. I was 28 at the time I joined, and the same time I began my second fight with cancer.. However, this time it meant business, as it had spread to roughly 90 % of my body, with only my head unaffected. It was at this point that Droenin Electronics offered me a solution.
Using their experimental nano machine laser, they cut off my head, keeping it alive as my body deteriorated away.
While I thank them for protecting me, I sometimes question whether it was right to keep me alive, for now I am just a bald head (thanks to all the chemo). A bald head they do experiments on. While the experiments are all primarily psychological, they always seem freaked out by me, despite being the ones who did this to me.
But Dave was different.
He always loved talking with me, constantly asking to be my tester (which I always preferred anyway), and taking me to his office when I didn’t have anything to do. He challenged me mentally, offering me word puzzles to figure out (He’s yet to find one that has stumped me) and showing me beautiful landscape shots. I always regret not visiting these places when I had a body.
Dave said today that I shouldn’t worry, that he would build me a new body. I thanked him profusely, and that I couldn’t wait. He agreed.
I woke up today to find I had hair once again. The men in suits who came in to test me psychologically were freaked out too, but it seemed theirs was a more scared freaked than my excited freaking out. They asked new question, like ‘who did this to me?’ ‘did you come into contact with anyone who offered to do this?’ ‘would you like us to remove it?’ I declined to answer all of these, for fear that Dave, whom I assumed did this, would get in trouble. I also declined their desire to remove it, but when they tried pulling it off anyway, it stuck hard. The weirdest thing was that the hair felt like it was embedded in my skull, like it were real hair and not a wig, which I thought it was.
Dave came by to check how I was doing, I told him I loved the new hair. He agreed, I looked amazing with my long, brown, curly hair. He said if there was anything else I wanted. I jokingly answered, ‘Besides a body, I’m doing fine right now.’ He told me he should have, at the very least, some working arms by the end of next month. As he left, I wished him the best of luck.
He smirked as he exited my room.
Today, some new guys came in. They were wearing black business suits, as opposed to the normal white lab coats, and wanted to know how I was progressing. I told them I was adjusting to life without a body just fine, which resulted in some weird looks. I guess people in my situation aren’t normally as positive as I am. I told them about my wish to have a body again, which seemed to spook them a bit too much, as they immediately left the room. This weirded me out a little, but I guess I did hire my head out for the company to do tests on, so I was obligated to be just a head until they decided I deserved a body.
Dave came by today. He showed me some rough sketches of a bust he was working on. He asked me if I wanted him to add pleasure sensors to the breasts. I responded with, ‘that’s a weird question, but sure. I want you to make them as similar to real breasts as possible.’ He agreed. He rushed out the room, saying goodbye to the men in black who had been standing outside my door.
The strange men from yesterday returned today. They told me they were going to move me to a ‘more secure’ room on 9/7. They were worried that the testing environment offered too many variables, and that ‘further interference would tamper with the results’ and other legal mumbo jumbo. I was disappointed, because they said that Dave would not be allowed to visit me anymore …
Dave came by again today to just talk. I told him about how the men in black were going to move me to a new lab on 9/7. This scared Dave as much as it did me. He remained silent for a few minutes, but then finally spoke the question I was hoping he’d ask since we first met.
‘Would you like to move in with me?’
Naturally I said yes.
Dave plan went in to action tonight. He brought along a large carpetbag to work, and stashed me in it, after replacing my head with a mannequin’s. His apartment was rather small, with only a single room that made up the entire kitchen, living room, and bed room of most apartments. I’m not going to say he was the messiest person I had met, but his house reminded me of my little brother’s. He set me down on his couch facing the TV, and we snuggled as we watched the machine I had most missed in my nearly 2-week long incarceration in the stuffy laboratory.
Dave told me he would bring me something special from work. I told him I couldn’t wait to see.
It seems the people at the Droenin company are really freaking out now, or at least that’s what the news said. I wish I could have seen the whole report, but Dave changed the channel before I could see the rest of the story. I asked him if he got a lot of flack for removing me from the testing environment, but he said to not worry. He made sure to cover his tracks last night, as the night guard was taking a bathroom break, and he had snagged the security camera footage. At least I knew he wouldn’t get in trouble for his kindness.
He then brought out a large, gift-wrapped present. I asked him if he could unwrap it, to which he responded in the affirmative. He opened it, and then pulled out a woman’s bust. It was probably the most pretty bust I had ever seen. He asked if I wanted to be placed on it now, or wait for him to build some arms for it. I asked to be placed on it now. Sadly, a knock on the door interrupted our special moment.
He quickly stuffed me under some laundry. From under the pile, I could hear him talk with two different men. They asked if he knew anything about the recent disappearance of test implements at Droenin Electronics. He denied such knowledge. They requested entry, to which he said they had no right without a warrant. They agreed to his wishes, but warned they would get one, and that they better find no evidence if he wished to keep his job.
He pulled me back out from under his laundry. He told me not to worry, because he had a back-up plan if they came back.
After the commotion from last night, Dave had forgotten to place the bust on me. He fixed that problem tonight. Reattaching the bust to my head was rather simple, it turned out. He had used many of the same nano-machines from the laser to make adding the right parts super easy.
The feelings I felt as the chest reattach were unexplainable. To go from having no heartbeat, to feeling the loving rhythm take over your entire body (or at least what was left of it), was amazing. In the passion of the moment, I begged Dave to fondle my chest. He obliged amazingly.
9/14
It had been nearly a week since I was freed from Droenin Laboratories. Dave had promised me arms tomorrow, but I was unsure if he could make a really good pair of prosthetics when his company was still on what was being described as ‘the biggest manhunt this country had ever seen’.
9/15
Well, Dave did it. He came home today with a set of arms that even I had trouble distinguishing were fake. Attaching them to my shoulders, the sensations that came from them were amazing. They were so versatile. To finally be able to move some limbs. I could finally move around the apartment. I could finally feed my self. For the first time since that fateful day, I felt truly alive.
Dave and I celebrated late into the night.
9/20
Dave came home very early tonight. He told me we had to move quickly, as they had finally gotten a warrant to search his apartment. He scooped me up into a backpack (which I was barely small enough to fit in when I folded my arms underneath my breasts.
As he drove away, I could hear the sound of the police sirens as they approached what was my home for the past two weeks.
9/21
We drove late into the night, we made only a quick stop at a diner for Dave to get some coffee (something I never enjoyed drinking) and use the restroom. It wasn’t until around 6:00 pm that we finally reached his contingency plan, which happened to be some motel in the middle of nowhere.
Dave bought us a room, carrying up his suitcase and me into it. He took me out of the backpack, and told me the speech he had clearly began writing during the drive here. ‘Laura, they’re going to find us. It’s almost certain. If this is our last night together, I just want to say I love you, and …’ he got down on one knee, ‘would you marry me?’ Despite only knowing him for a month, I still felt my feelings towards him were real.
‘Yes’
To him, this was probably the greatest response he could ask for. He pulled over his suitcase to reveal what he had been working on ever since he had met me.
It was a set of female genitalia.
That day was the greatest day of my life.
Report of Incident Concluded on 9/22:
Project leader David Ford was discovered in a motel off of route 45. He was found hung from the ceiling fan, believed to be a suicide as Subject #327943 had powered down nearby. He was the believed kidnapper of the aforementioned subject.
Subject #327943 was Droenin Electronic’s first attempt at an artificial intelligence, The model chosen was a female head, however did not begin to develop human features until David Ford was introduced as the new project leader. It is believed David Ford reset the subject’s AI with a pre-made program of prior lover Laura Hennings, who died the year prior due to an unsuccessful chemotherapy treatment. Why he was in the possession of such a program is currently unknown, and will likely not be found.
Over the two weeks period before the subjects disappearance, the changes to her AI and physical appearance became noticeable to other key staff members of the project, and a request for the removal of David Ford from the project was filed. However, due to the desire of the company’s employers for the success of the project, it was instead decided upon to shift the project to the Washington branch. It was at this point that David Ford took matters into his own hands and removed the test subject to what has been revealed to be his apartment.
Over the following two week period after this incident, a warrant and evidence was gathered to convict David. Such evidence included his sudden interest in the prosthetics department and his theft of several of their highest end models (all of which had been found on the build of Subject #327943). However, when such info was finally gathered, David fled the scene.
It is believed he suffered from depression due to the death of his previous lover. He had confided in his friends he was going to propose if she were to get better.
Unbeknownst to David, the room Subject #327943 was held in acted as a charging station as well, with a primitive battery to sustain up to a month worth of power after being unplugged. It is believed that the reason Subject #327943 ran out of power before this period was the integration of parts that were not originally part of the AI’s design. The subject’s battery should have been at roughly 5%, however one final exertion some point in the night of 9/21 caused the power to run out and for the AI to enter a comatose state.
It is currently uncertain, at this moment if this event happened prior to David’s hanging.
Debate has begun on whether or not Subject #327943 should be reactivated, or if the project should be scrapped and started anew.
