Context: This is a short story written for Day 23 of Kinktober 2024 using the prompt words Asylum and Stuck.

I stepped over the pile of rubble which had once been a wall, now totally dilapidated. The grass lawn inside was unkempt and overgrown. The building was abandoned and it showed. Most of the windows’ panes were missing, but their steel bars weren’t.

All in all, the old insane asylum still cast an imposing facade. It hadn’t been in use for nearly a hundred years, yet locals still kept their distance. I didn’t blame them. Even now in the middle of a cloudy but well-lit day, approaching it alone sent a chill through my spine.

There were all sorts of urban legends about the institution. Supposedly inmates were restrained and isolated for days at a time, subjected to torturous experimental treatments. More recently the location had been attributed to the disappearances of several women. That was why I was here now, searching for evidence supporting any of the rumours, past or present, for an article.

I stepped through a door frame which no longer had standing doors. The floor was cracked and uneven and the walls were grimy. I took out my phone to use as a torch in the dimmer light.

I reached an intersection where the main corridor ahead was blocked by a wall of iron bars. Its iron bar door was ajar. I pushed the door aside, flinching at the screeching of the rusted hinges.

I was only a short distance down the corridor when I heard another terrible screeching that chilled me to the bone. I looked back to see it was coming from the same iron bar door, slowly swinging back closed. It took a second for the realisation and panic to sink in. If the door closed and there was an automatic lock...

I sprinted frantically back down the corridor. The door creaked the entirety of its slow swing. I was almost upon it as it neared the frame. My hand touched the bar at the same time as I hear a loud simultaneous clang! and click!

In my haste to grab the metal, my hand holding the phone fumbled. The phone flew forward through the bars, sliding across the floor.

“No!!"

I pulled desperately at the door. It was locked. I was locked in. My phone was far out of reach. No-one knew I was coming here today. I was stuck here.

I started hyperventilating, my fear spiralling out of control. But in the serene darkness, I calmed myself. I hadn't looked around yet. There had to be another way out, maybe a fire exit or something similar. Though fire safety may not have been well established when the building was made, plus they wouldn’t allow an easy exit for inmates. I tried my best to ignore these thoughts and stay positive.

I nervously advanced down the corridor, now without a light. It led to what appeared to be the main ward. Barred windows provided just enough light to get by. There were a few open areas, treatment rooms and corridors with rows of small cells. Every room I came across triggered visions in my mind of women suffering in it. Every dead end and new room without an exit raised my blood pressure. My original goal no longer mattered at all.

I started running, shoving through door after door. I felt on the verge of a breakdown when I pushed through a set of double-doors...

I was briefly blinded. The room I stepped into was very brightly lit. As my eyes adjusted, I saw that it was also perfectly clean, with none of the grime or disrepair that the rest of the building had. Everything was tidy and normal, with a few neatly arranged tables and chairs. It was surreal.

A door to the side opened and a young woman walked in. She wore a full-length white apron and a white cap. She looked like a nurse.

“Oh hello. What are you doing wandering about?”

“I was trying to... find a way out... what is this place?”

She smiled softly at me.

“Don't worry. This is a safe space.”

“I... I need to get out of here. Can you please help me leave?”

She stepped towards me. “I'm sorry dear, but that isn’t possible.”

I took a few steps back, then turned and ran. I heard her yell out for assistance. I sprinted through the first door I saw. More clean well-lit rooms and corridors. I spotted someone ahead walking through another iron-bar door. I shoved past him and kept running. More yelling behind me that I ignored.

I burst through a heavy door into the outdoor air. At last! I felt such huge relief and collapsed to my knees, falling on soft grass.

As my hand touched the short grass, I realised something was wrong. It shouldn’t be this well-trimmed. Looking out I saw tall, intact walls fully surrounding the lawn, with barbed wire lining the top. The sun was shining brightly, not a cloud in the sky.

A few people walking nearby stared at me. Their clothing and hairstyles were very old-fashioned. I wasn’t wearing my own clothes any more. I was in a long white gown.

“No this isn’t right. No no no no...”

The nurse stomped out, flanked by two male orderlies. One carried a straitjacket.

I cried out and resisted with all my strength, but together they quickly overpowered me. My arms were forced inside the straitjacket. Before long, they were tucked against my body under my breasts, held fast by the jacket. They had pulled every strap closed as tightly as they could manage, including an invasive strap up through my legs.

“I’m not meant to be here! This is the wrong time!”

I was still kicking and screaming as they dragged me back inside.

I was left inside a small sparsely furnished room. I was lying on a table, my body and legs held down by straps. I was still in the straitjacket, which had been tightened further once they had me held down. The nurse entered the room.

“Nurse! Please, you have to listen to me very carefully. Something very wrong has happened. I’m a reporter investigating a disappearance. I was exploring the abandoned asylum and got stuck and somehow ended up here. I’m from the fut-... I... Look I’m not insane! I shouldn’t be in here!”

I bit my tongue before blurting out something about the apparent shift in time. I needed to be very careful about what I said if I was to be let out.

The nurse waited patiently, looking at me with a condescending expression.

“You were about to say ‘the future’ weren’t you? I’m afraid you’re not the first woman we’ve had afflicted with this particular delusion.”

“I... it’s not a delusion! I’m sure I can find some way to prove it to you. But first you have to untie me.”

She turned from me, retrieving something from a drawer.

“I can’t do that. In fact after that violent outburst out front, I’m afraid we’ll have to keep you restrained to the utmost for the foreseeable future. For your own safety, you understand.”

“No you can’t do this! It’s not right. I’m not insane!!”

The nurse marched up to me and shoved something leathery deep into my mouth. It was a leather bit-gag but T-shaped, with the interior piece suppressing my tongue. She pulled the strap closed tight.

“Hnngghh!”

“That’s better.”

I gagged on the oral intruder. It was unbearably uncomfortable and degrading. I really was starting to feel hysterical now. If I couldn’t talk, I couldn’t reason with her. I couldn’t prove my sanity. Although I was starting to doubt it myself. Was all this real?

“There’s good news at least. We have an extensive rehabilitation plan that will rid you of these fanciful notions. I will confess that the first few months will be particularly difficult. You will undergo alternating periods of sensory deprivation and sensory overload. But I can assure you that by the end of it all, you will be compliant~”

I was about to get answers for my investigation, but in a far too up-close-and-personal manner.

“I’ve found that electro-stimulation of erogenous zones is a particularly effective method for more hysterical young ladies like yourself. The extended sexual frustration really helps break down your mind for re-education. I’ll schedule you for two sessions a day.”

"Mhhh... mmm.... mmmhh!”

I was at the edge of panic. I tried very hard to stay calm and plead at her. I needed her to hear me out. I couldn't stay here like this, for who knows how long. I couldn’t face whatever abominable procedures she was talking about.

“Glad to hear you calming down a bit. So first thing, we’ll get you fitted with a more secure jacket and gag for long-term wear. Then the ‘plug’ belt, which will be uncomfortable the first few times it’s inserted up inside you, but you’ll get used to it. Alright then, see you in a few hours for your first treatment~”

The nurse was still smiling as she turned and left the room. I lost my composure and descended into mania. I bucked against my tight restraints as hard as I could. My pitiful gag-muffled wails echoed against the pristine asylum walls as the door swung closed.
