My name is Helena, and I’m a gorgon. Sort of.
It’s true that I’m thousands of years old, have magical powers, and a mass of snakes for hair but I’m not actually related to Medusa or her sisters. I won’t turn you into a statue just be looking at you, either. Unfortunately, most people can’t seem to get past the snakes without thinking ‘gorgon’ and it’s so much easier to say than ‘manifestation of primal forces and man’s relationship with nature’. And I do like ancient Greek fashion.
Thousands of years ago I had a pretty decent job as a wise but fickle enchantress, granting magical powers to the occasional brave hero and transforming the wicked (or just a bit rude) into beasts. Covered for Circe a couple of times. Nice woman, good chef. Unfortunately, times change, and mankind decides to believe in science instead of magic, forcing the mythical community into hiding. I decided to go travelling for a while, steering clear of Europe during the whole ‘witch-hunting’ fad, learning a trick or two from some very nice dragons, even got a gig as a tribal goddess for a bit, which was rather fun.
Eventually, I figured I’d best get a job, settle down for a time. Times change, even for the mythical underground. Everyone’s got a flying chariot that needs pulling or a gate to the underworld that needs guarding, but pegasi and three-headed dogs are in rather short supply. That’s where I come in. Remember that bit about transforming people into beasts. Well, I can change people into lots of other things, too.
As far as the mortal world is concerned, Hellenic Recruitment is a small but successful recruitment agency, much like any other. For the mythic world, I’m the premier supplier of all kinds of mythical help, from satyr musicians to cyclops construction workers. As for those I hire, they get an excellent salary in exchange for being, er, changed for a couple of years, with the option to make it permanent afterwards.
Most people make it permanent.
