There it was. A tiny rhythmic knock. Nick groggily opened his eyes. The dorm room was pitch black. Who knew what time it was? His roommate had been gone for most of the day and now there was that persistent noise on the door.
He rolled over, slapping his right hand down on the spot he usually left his glasses. Thankfully, he felt the cold metal frames with his first swipe. After slapping them onto his face Nick heaved himself out of his bed to see if anyone was actually out there.
A look through the peephole confirmed that nobody was, and he was about to go back to bed when he heard the noise again. It was definitely knocking, and it was definitely coming from beyond the door.
Nick turned back and yanked the door open.
There was nobody there.
Nick was about to pull the door back closed when a tiny voice said from the floor, "Thank goodness! I thought I would never wake you up!"
Nick looked down to see a mouse, sitting on the carpet just beyond the door frame. It was looking straight at him. The little rodent thanked him profusely before scrambling into the room.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" The little creature asked.
Then realization struck its tiny face. "Ooooh! I swear it's temporary! I'm your roommate! Uh, you got a 86% on the last calc exam! We did the review together and you were confident you'd get an A!"
"I'm too tired for this," Nick mumbled, closing the door and turning back towards his bed.
"Wait! Can you put me in my bed first!"
Nick grudgingly lifted the tiny creature into the bed, before flopping onto his. What a night.
