Kalena was born part of 1% of people in Trivium with an unique power, an ability no one else in her family possessed. She could materialize her dreams, giving them shape in world. Often a unique power was something to be treasured, but because as soon as she awoke her manifestations would disappear, coupled with her lack of any ability to control them, her power was placed in the novelty class. More of a curiosity or annoyance than anything else, her dreams had a habit of wandering around the room and disturbing her family at night. She had to sleep by herself most of the time.
Then, one day, she encountered a monster. While it was far from powerful, she was defenseless and it nearly killed her. A fellow villager had to drive it off with a pitchfork. The experience shook her. The monster returned that night in her own home, smashing the furniture, but vanished as soon as she awoke. She was confused at first, but the monster returned the following night, its claw marks on the wall the only sign of its visit. On its next visit, Kalena caught a glimpse of it in the split second before it disappeared. The beast was larger than before, having longer claws and more teeth than it needed. It was then she realized what it was: a nightmare.
Like with other dreams, the nightmare didn't visit her every night. Sometimes she would simply sleep without dreaming, and other times have pleasant dreams. Still, when she did have a nightmare, it gave her no end of trouble. It wasn't just the warped version of the monster that visited her; other nightmares came to life as well. The other villages started to resent her for her nighttime rackets. Then, it got worse after her village was raided. Monstrous hybrids of the raiders came to life that very night.
This was too much for the village and they drove Kalena out. She had to make a living as a wanderer, moving from town to town. It wasn't good for her mental state. Every now and then, the nightmares would return and she was forced to flee.
In time, she crossed paths with the sorceress Lilly Smith. She took her collar for her protection. While others viewed Kalena's power as a curse, Lilly viewed it as an asset, something to be explored and valued. She gave her an enchanted dreamcatcher to keep her nightmares at bay.
In her travels, Kalena had used a spear to protect herself largely because it was a cheap and easy to use weapon. One of Lilly's veteran warriors started training her in it, teaching her discipline to help conquer her nightmares. She hunted and slayed the monster that haunted her as a child. Likely not the exact same monster, but it was the same species. She became a fighter, taking on raiders that attacked nearby villages with her sister slaves.
Eventually, Kalena learned to astroproject, her mind leaving her body and manifesting her own double, or at least an idealized version of herself. In this state, she was stronger and faster, able to jump far higher than she ever could without magical enchantments. However, like with all her other manifestations, this powerful warrior would cease as soon as she woke up.
Ever the innovator, Lilly started to experiment on Kalena. She placed her in a slumber, turning her body to stone, not awake yet not fully inert. She could still dream and her avatar once again walked among them, not needing for the real Kanlena to wake up to eat or drink. However, something unexpected happened. Being in this state for a prolonged period of time caused another Kalena to appear. Both were Kalena, yet not Kalena. They shared memories and skills. However, one was more outgoing than the other. In time, a third emerged.
Lilly fine-tuned the enchantment until she got something that worked for her. Naturally, whenever she restored Kalena, all of her copies would vanish and would have to start over again the next time she slept. Eventually, Lilly worked out a system that worked for them. The real Kalena was encased in a mystical crystal and kept in a dream-like state. A special enchantment allowed Lilly to control her dreams. This caused her to lose manifestations like animal mounts and the like, but it also meant her projections were more consistent.
Each wore red and black armor with gold trim, resembling the uniforms of Lilly's regular military. A number was printed on the chest to show their generation and ID. Each of them could conjure a spear and shield. The spear is a morph weapon, able to change the shape and ability of its blade. It has three abilities: an energy-enchanted edge, a thunder attack, and transmutation, namely the ability to turn living things it cuts into sapphire. It can only use one of these abilities at a time, or none at all if she chooses.
A special room was chosen to house the crystal and Kalena's real body. There, she spawns new clones. They make excellent foot soldiers as they are skilled but disposable. They don't have blood or leave bodies behind, instead crumbling when killed, eventually disintegrating. Normal healing spells have a limited effect on them. While most of them have rather muted personalities, there is always one or two of them who are more outgoing and active than the others. Should she fall, another will soon take her place.
Lilly's interest in her had grown. It didn't take long for her to start searching for women with similar powers.
