Physical description

Usually resembling a wooden chest or sometimes full metal at least two feet wide. They vary as to what type of wood and metal they appear to be made out of. The inside has sharp teeth and flesh like walls. They posses a long tongue for swallowing prey.

General description

Mimics make their home with in dungeons, abandoned buildings, and other places adventurers may search for treasure. They take the form of treasure chests, often making themselves look like other chests in the area. They have the ability to change their appearance, but generally only their coloring and to a limited extent the type of chest they look like.

The lifespan of a mimic is very hard to determined as they put themselves into stasis as they wait for pray. Should someone open try to open them they would wake up and try to swallow them, often whole. When attacking mimics will ether jump around or sprout tentacles from their base depending on their breed. Some have even been known to levitate, however this is rare.

The stomach of a mimic contains a pocket dimensional. It is large enough to hold an adult human, often something as large as a lamia. Some are even able to hold several people. Their pray is placed into a sleep as they are slowly digested. There is a large window of several days were they could be recused. As the victims are drained of their vitality first they are often exhausted when recused but otherwise unharmed.

Once their prey has been devoured and no other threats are around the mimic will return to sleep before long. They can go for years between meals.

Mimics are capable of being domesticated. Although difficult to locate they can be trained with regular meals once captured. A properly trained mimic will not attack their master and could even be taught to hold their pray for later regurgitation. The right spell could split their stomach in two so as not to risk the victim being digested. Many tamed mimics are placed inside of treasuries and storage rooms to catch would be thieves. Sometimes they are even modified so they could be used as real chests depending on how they are opened.
