"Your girlfriend was in an accident."
These were the words I feared the most. The entire room I was in spun. It couldn't have taken me more than a mere five minutes to get to the side of the highway where a man on the other line told me where the crash occurred---a trip that otherwise would have taken a good fifteen. I leapt out of my car, giving no caution to the semis that zipped past, and looked around at the crash site. There were long strips of metal that had been twisted up, smoldering engine parts, and chunks of plastic and fiberglass. No sight of Livi at all. Seeing the group of firefighters, policemen, and paramedics, I rushed over to them and explained who I was.
One of the Paramedics was flushed in the face. A sense of dread ran up my spine.
“Please, please tell me she’s okay.”
The Paramedic, whose name tag read Patty, tilted her head and showed clenched teeth. “Uhh…yes, and no.”
“What? W-what do you mean? How hurt is she?”
The group parted, and on a stretcher, was Livi’s disembodied head. Alive, and frowning.
I was light headed and sick to my stomach at the sight. But also...relieved? She was alive, somehow, with no prior explanation or hint that my girlfriend was superhuman. “I..I-I don’t…I don’t understand…”
“Look, neither did we, but she’s registered as an Abnormal in the system when we took her information.” One of the policemen said. “It makes sense. Uhh, kinda.”
I approached the stretcher to get a better look at her. Her face was covered in dirt, with a few bruises here and there. Her hair was a tattered mess. And her neck abruptly ended about halfway down—a ring of dried blood ran along the edge. She smiled.
“Hey Calvin. I would explain, but I think they covered most of it.”
Shaking my head, I asked her why she would keep her origin as an Abnormal a secret, when it was a well known fact a large portion of the population were one. “It would have been way less of a shock, you know?”
“Yeah…you can be mad at me for that.”
Patty nudged my shoulder. “She’s perfectly fine if you’d like to take her home. No sense in taking her in, really.”
“But…what about the rest of her?” I said as I scanned the inside of the ambulance and around the surrounding area.
“It’s still out there in all that mess. She specifically asked for us not to retrieve them.”
Livi interjected before I could form an opinion on the bizarre request. “I would be less embarrassed if it were someone I knew.”
“The one person who should have known about this.” I was sure she would shrug if she had shoulders.
The group of emergency responders required a few signatures on release forms, then eventually left, leaving me holding my girlfriend’s severed head in my hands on the side of the highway. “Well, we should try to find the rest of you.” I turned back to the wreckage of what used to be my old Corolla. "Sheesh."
"It wasn't my fault. Some douche canoe wasn't paying attention and started shifting into my lane. I swerved to avoid an accident and…umm..ended up in one anyway. So fuck me."
"Not while you're like this, I won't."
"Hur hur hur." Livi said mockingly.
Carefully navigating the scene, Livi’s head and I got closer to where most of the car remained. I stopped dead in my tracks as I noticed a familiar…appendage.
It was Livi’s severed leg from the knee down. The foot was bare and dirty from what I could only imagine rolling several yards through dirt.
"Were…were you driving barefoot again?"
"Drivers Ed taught me to never do that."
"Then why?" I said incredulously.
"I would shrug if I had shoulders."
I walked up to the leg and picked it up by the ankle with my free hand. It was still warm and plenty alive despite the cross-section of bloody tissue. There were a few bruises here and there, but otherwise it was in good condition. No broken bones or cuts.
"That's going to need a good scrub."
"I think this is the weirdest thing I've experienced." I wondered why she couldn't have had the power of flight. Or transforming into a tall green woman with super-strength. It was decided that I wasn't going to be able to haul her body in one go, so I turned around and walked back to my new car. I couldn't be happier to not have lent it to her.
Livi’s disembodied head was placed in the passenger seat along with her partial leg. She frowned. "Could you move my foot away from my face? It kinda stinks."
I moved it off the seat and placed it on the floorboard. "Better?"
Livi was silent, then exclaimed "Oh!" She giggled. "I can't give you a thumbs up."
Shaking my head was the only reaction I could muster. "Okay stay here…oh forget it. I'll be back." I returned to the mess and recovered more parts. A full arm. A hand, which held her phone with a cracked screen in a tight grip. The other truncated arm. All were placed inside my car and on the floorboard as well.
"Did you find the rest?"
"No. I'm not sure where your torso or other leg flew off."
Livi chewed on her bottom lip. "Try inside the car?"
A lightbulb lit up in my head. Walking back, I realized the main chunk of the car was upside down. I dropped to my knees and peered inside. Sure enough, the rest of Livi was dangling from the seat, held in place by the belt. At least she had the sense to do that. Carefully, I reached inside and pushed the release. The headless, armless, body with part of its leg missing flopped down on top of me.
"Ahh, fuck." The wind was nearly knocked out of my lungs. I wiggled myself from underneath, dusting off the pebbles of glass on my clothes. Livi wore a band shirt and lounge shorts. It certainly explained why she practically exploded.
As gently as I could, I began to pull her body out from what was left of the vehicle, but my best efforts were foiled by her particularly fragile state. The foot caught the edge of the twisted door frame, and was cleanly ripped off.
But In trying to keep it from happening, I twisted the hunk of Livi away from the frame…and tore her in two. I gasped as I saw the lower half fall to the ground. It bounced slightly, ass jiggling, then rested still.
"...Fuck me." Liv was going to be Liv-id. He was sure of it. It was no question that her arms and legs could be reattached, but her hips? There was even some skepticism reserved for her head. I hoisted the torso onto my shoulder, her boobs pressed against the side of my face. It would be an awsome experience if not for the lack of…anything else.
Livi’s face lit up as she saw me return. Then it shifted to an expression of confusion. "Did I really come apart at every seam?"
"Not until I accidentally cut you in half." I said with a sigh. It took a second before it registered in my brain what an absurd statement I made. I held the torso by the back and the cross-section of red flesh, propping it upright in the driver's seat.
Her eyes darted to the left. "At least my boobies didn't fall off."
"Let me go get your ass. Literally."
"Don't get too frisky." Livi winked.
I found my way back to where the crash was—again, and hopefully for the last time—and reached down to pick up my girlfriend’s severed lower-half. Gingerly, I lifted them up by the side of the hips, and trying like the gentleman I liked to make myself out to be, refrained from touching her ass and...front regions. I stood it up, but without a left foot, there wasn't much I could do to balance it. The part in question was still stuck to the twisted door frame. The hips were hoisted up onto my shoulder, my arm holding the back of her one, mostly complete leg in place. I sighed as I bent down to get the severed foot.
"This better be the last part or she'd just be going to have to go without. I am not coming back."
As I returned to Livi's scattered self, I turned over the foot in my hand. It wasn't dirty like her other had been, and seemed to be in perfect shape if it weren't for it being separated from her body. Then something strange rose from within. I wasn't much of a foot guy myself. It could be said that Livi was more attracted to them than I, but for reasons I couldn't explain, I felt like this was something I...liked. I got a closer look at her appendage. I could have licked it. Sucked on them like she would order me to do numerous times during sex.
"Damn, my ass looks good like that."
I snapped out of it. "What?"
"Is that everything?"
I nodded. "I believe so. But if there's anything left, you're on your own."
Livi stuck her tongue out at me.
Her lower half was laid across the back seat, and with consideration to keep the detached foot with me, I placed it on top of the thighs instead. It was nice to finally sit and take a breather as I leaned back in the driver's seat. I closed my eyes and transported myself to a time when my girlfriend wasn't in seven pieces. I started the car.
"Ready to get back home and...put you back together?"
"Ready as ever."
Just when I put the vehicle in drive, Livi shouted.
"Oh! My wallet!"
I stared at Livi with daggers. Letting gravity take control, my head fell to the steering wheel.
