3 columns of light illuminated my face, waking me up just a little too early for my liking, but as soon as I was conscious I remembered my current predicament with a certain 'guest' in my apartment. Dragging myself out of a cozy cocoon of pillows and bedspread, I slowly made the short journey from one end of my bedroom to the kitchenette in the next room. I wasn't concerned about her new putty-like companion, but simply aware of being a good host; it's manners to supply a half decent breakfast, at least.
I was a little confused when I first met Em, but quickly I found myself growing fond of my new companion, despite her unique physiology. Em's energy is actually quite infectious, even if I'm always a bit reluctant to accept it, but that's my problem, not hers. All that energy must have come from a goodnights sleep though, since Em was no where to be found at 10 in the morning.
"Hmm, she must be sleeping still."
I wandered through my messy living room towards the kitchenette, thinking about what I may or (more likely) may not have to eat, shoving last night's dirty plates in the sink to make room on the counter. I then reached into my pocket to get my morning fix of melodrama and memes, but realised that I had forgotten my phone. So, as I always would, I turned around and headed back to my room, stepping over the crap on the floor, moving mismatching furniture to make way, and since I had a guest, I cleared the table for us, hiding the random junk on the window sill just adjacent to it, right next to Em's head...
"Oh shit!" Forced it's way out of my mouth, nearly breathless. "Wa... what are you doing there? Uh, where's the rest of you."
"Morning!" Said Em, totally unaware of the context of the situation. "My body is still asleep in those boxes you gave me, so I thought I'd leave her be and watch the world go by. She's really comfy in all those pieces by the way!"
I took a moment before enquiring further as to why, or how, Em had put herself so far from the rest of her. "How did you get here if your body is still asleep then?"
"Oh, that's easy..." she turn her head and bounced on her neck to fully face me, and proceeded to jump off the ledge with a soft 'thwamp' as her stump squarely hit the floor. "...since most of my neck is on my head, I can use it to get around. Look!" She then proceeded to 'smack' and 'thwamp' her way along the floor to the couch about 4 feet from me, as if she were some cartoon head hopping around. Bouncing and stoping to turn to me once again, she beamed at her little achievement. "It's super useful when nobody is around to carry me. I don't really need a body, actually!"
The sheer difference between the way Em looks, and how she acts, never fails to put a smile on my face, a welcome distraction from the hustle of life. Paying the bills, your shit job, putting food on the table, it goes out the window at times like this. Em seems so innocent, carefree, and always smiles. I have no idea if she's pulling my foot (well, not that way, yet) either, but that adds to her appeal somehow; like a fairy, or a doll, you can never be sure if anything you see and hear is real, but at the same time, it's always nice to see a pretty girl bouncing around with a cheery smile.
"Do you want some breakfast, or at least coffee?" I offered, half expecting her to reveal that coffee makes her spontaneously combust or something.
"Sure, that would be wonderful!" She beamed. "Just get it somewhere near a mouth if possible, thanks!"
"Okie doke, coming right up. I'll make sure not to do any finger food!" I was pretty pleased with that one.
Em sniggers at my little joke as she starts to bounce with my as I make my way back to the kitchenette, starting slowly with a laboured hop and building up momentum as she went, her stump making weirdly satisfying soft, squishy noises against the hard wood.
"Do you want some help?" she said from the floor. I had to move my head more than I expected to look at her next to my worn out slippers, here own bright blue eyes nearly rolling to the back of her head to meet mine.
"Uh, that's very kind of you, but I'm not sure exactly what you could do?"
Once again, Em just giggled, and then seemed to tense up and recoil slightly into her neck, and launched herself onto the counter. She tool a moment to catch her breath. "I guess I could... be moral support?"
I just laughed as I continued to prepare mugs, find coffee, get things out the fridge. I wasn't a morning person at the best of times, but I don't think many people could make a human head helpful in this circumstance. "Unless you don't mind lending me your arms so I can make coffee and toast at the same, you're better off staying there and looking pretty."
"Hehe, you know I would if you could use them, but they're too sleepy. And yeah, I guess being pretty is my job." She seemed very sincere about the rest of her. Perhaps I should take lessons from her and look after my own body better?
Eventually, I finished the extensive spread of lukewarm toast, butter, various spreads, and instant coffee with a dash of possible off-milk for the both of us. I took a dinner tray from the floor near the TV (dusting it off little) and used to carry our breakfast to the table, even offering Em a lift.
"Are you sure? It doesn't look big enough."
I looked again and... damn, she's right. "Uh... oh, I've got an idea! Open your mouth for me..."
By shoving 2 slices of toast into Em, it made just enough space for everything and her head, and only a minute later she was enjoying her meal... because she had no idea that you eat toast with spread.
"I though that other stuff was for you?"
