“Hmmhmmhmm…” Came the hum of a young-looking woman as she gazed into the light emitting from a crystal construct atop a dark, wooden desk. Candlelight caused shadows to dance wildly in contrast to the steady, ethereal glow of the crystal. “100 sets of eyes?” the woman murmured, bemused at the attention those playthings were garnering, “I’ll have to see about giving them something special…”
Tearing herself away from the crystal now, she strolled, features obscured by the dim lighting, flowing hair, and hat with far too large a brim to be able to retain its form the way it did, across the room toward another surface. She regarded each woven doll in turn, each made to fit an image of her design. Of course, there was the classic, but she worried it would be predictable. Then there was the sweet one, but it was far too much fun to torment that one. The sultry one, the serious one… no, no, these wouldn’t do to bear the role in the game she had planned. Then, at last, her eyes settled on the perfect target. Yes, yes, this one would do – familiar, yet unpredictable; expected, but unexpected all at once. She snatched the doll into her hand and turned towards the crystal.
“I do hope you enjoy the show… Darlings.”
Sophie liked things. She liked to have things, liked to buy things, liked to take things. She was unapologetically materialistic and made sure everyone around her knew it. Some would call her fake or two faced, usually people that were beneath her status in high school and were still bitter about it, but she would argue that she’s the most authentic person she knew. She did not shy away from what she wanted, and she did not care to change herself for the sake of anyone else, even if that meant she was the type to shut the locals out of their own pool, or trick and old foe into eating treats that blue her up into a giant blueberry. She considered these traits intrinsic to her being, and she was proud of the person she was.
This particular morning, Sophie was getting herself ready as she often did before a shopping trip. She styled her hair until her perfectly balanced locks framed her face perfectly, putting it up in a ponytail adorned with a bow. She spread foundation on her face to create a uniform canvas for which her mastery of makeup could shine, applying contour and eyeliner with practiced precision. Her outfit selection was massive, and yet she hardly missed a beat before selecting a cute ensemble that paired perfectly with her choice of makeup and hair accessory. By the time she was slipping on her heels and tucking her things away into her purse, she realized she was ahead of schedule. Her friends, or lackeys as someone like dirty Dani would call them, wouldn’t be here for another half hour at least. Sophie frowned, biting her lip a bit. It irked her to sit around wasting time – Others ought to wait on her, not the other way around.
She sat at her desk and opened her laptop, planning on perusing online stores, as was her want. After a few minutes of scrolling and adding to cart, something on the computer pinged. Sophie blinked – not seeing any notification or pop up. She shook her head and continued to shop until she heard the computer let out another sound. Frowning, she minimized the webpage she was on, searching for the source of the noise. It took her a few seconds to realize there was a new icon in her taskbar. It was extremely faint but looked like some kind of crystal. Clicking on it filled her room with an ethereal light, but Sophie found herself utterly mesmerized by what she saw. She stared into the screen as it seemed to swallow her, and she felt herself floating, then falling… deeper and deeper into the light.
Sophie did not know how long she had been looking into the light. She looked around herself to regain her composure. Her computer was off, her phone was lighting up with texts from her friends, and there was still daylight seeping through her curtains. Her body felt stiff as she groaned and moved to stand. Her limbs sighed in relief as she stretched before checking her phone. Her friends were waiting for her but hadn’t been for very long. That was good, she figured with a smile touching her lips, maybe she ought to keep them waiting a while longer. Her mind drifted back to the light, and what she’d seen, but she could scarcely remember. She only recalled the feeling, and a voice telling her to… to… She shook her head, she couldn’t remember. Hell of a virus, she thought.
One of the help her family hired to keep their sprawling home clean and to appear as rich and powerful as possible to those around them opened her door. The maid simply thought Sophie had left already and was planning on tidying up while she had the opportunity to. Normally, it wouldn’t be a big deal to see her still here – a simply apology and she’d move on to the next room, but this time was different, much to the poor maid’s detriment.
The sound ripped Sophie from her thoughts and startled her enough to let out a squeal. Frustrated by her own frightened display, she pointed to the maid, ready to chastise her for barging in, but words failed her. The reason for this likely had to do with the flash of light her finger emitted. It was the same color as the light that had taken her in before, and it struck the maid in the chest. Before either woman could utter much of a sound, the maid dropped her supplies and stood up rigidly straight. Her body began to stretch and widen like someone was using the transform tool on a photo editor. Indeed, she seemed less three dimensional now, her body flattening as she was stretched. She was unable to make a sound, but her face betrayed the discomfort of her situation, and while Sophie was shocked, she was not at all concerned for her wellbeing. Her staring was fascination, not worry. She watched as the maid’s features seemed to blend together, blurring to a single texture, her body one rectangular shape with no indication of limbs or facial features left to identify her. All at once, she fell in a heap on the floor, and Sophie lifted the red blanket that the maid had become. She was soft to the touch, and the exact blanket she had added to her cart earlier, even down to the brand on her tag. She smirked to herself and tossed her new blanket on the bed. She was no stranger to magic, though she’d never had any of that power herself before. She felt she deserved this ability much more than that filthy Owens girl did and treated it as finally getting her dues rather than anything extraordinary. She left to go join her friends outside, figuring she would leave the tidying up to the… well, the next maid her parents hired.
Outside her two best friends, Kylee and Abigail, were waiting in fashionable clothing, but nothing that tried to compete with Sophie for attention. They greeted her with squeals and praise for her makeup and clothing and hair as always, but Sophie’s mind was occupied with her newfound abilities. She hardly acknowledged Abigail talking about the new hottie working at the café in the mall, but at least that was fairly normal for the leader of this little clique.
They arrived at the mall and began their shopping spree in a clothing store, as was their tradition. Whatever had been distracting Sophie seemed to melt away as they began trying on various outfits and racking up quite the stack of clothing to buy. Sophie let her mind drift back to the maid-blanket again when she found an adorable dress she wished was in another color. It made her think of why the maid became a blanket in the first place. It was because she wanted a blanket like that right? It had to be – she refused to think that she didn’t understand her own miraculous and sudden powers.
Sophie called Abigail into the changing room and held the dress up to her, “Hold this and stand over there.” Abigail dutifully obeyed, even though she didn’t understand what the point of this was. Sophie stood back and looked at the dress, focusing on wanting it in another color. She wanted it. She really wanted it. She took a breath and snapped her finger at Abigail.
Abigail was short and cute. Her features were small and dainty, and her light brown hair draped over the front of her left shoulder in a braid. She dressed in skinny jeans and a shirt that just barely exposed her flat stomach. She was careful to erase any imperfections on her face but kept her makeup light and subtle otherwise and had been following Sophie around since high school. She stood by the wall of the changing room and waited for Sophie to say or do anything. She wasn’t expecting her to snap, and even more so she didn’t expect the feeling that currently jolted through her entire body.
She shivered. It felt as though invisible hands were caressing and kneading her all over, “Wh-wh-wha… what…?” she murmured, more confused than anything. She thought she heard a voice, but it was too distant to make out clearly. She dropped the dress, but not because she was so stunned. Her hands were simply incapable of holding anything anymore. They flopped uselessly at her wrists and lost all distinction as her fingers fused together into a flat looking flap that proceeded to open into a circular hole – like the end of a sleeve. Most importantly for Sophie, these former hands were the perfect color. Meanwhile, poor Abigail’s mouth had gone dry, and she panted for breath as if some immense pressure was squeezing the air from her lungs – preventing her from crying for help or even asking what was happening. Instead, she lifted her floppy fabric hands in disbelief, watching the color inch its way up her arm. She watched helplessly as her arm numbed and flopped as her skin changed to silky fabric. She cast a panicked glance to Sophie, only to be met with greedy eyes watching her like a satisfied customer. Her arms began to bunch up, shrinking and poofing up her shoulders to match the dress’ design.
Abigail let out a gasp as she fell, unaware that her legs had fused together to form the skirt of the dress beneath her, and some unseen force had been holding her up until now. Rather than fall with a thud, her now empty lower half fluttered as she drifted to the floor, and Abigail watched as the fabric continued its creeping up her waist.
“…re a dress…”
She could finally hear the voice. It was a soothing, sultry voice of someone whispering in her ear, telling her what she should do.
“You are a dress”
She should just lie back and not worry. Pretty things shouldn’t worry about anything.
“You are a dress”
She didn’t need her chest anymore, it looked better like this.
“You are a dress”
Its face began to fade away, thoughts began to vanish bit by bit from it as it sank away into an opening in what was once its neck.
“You are a dress.”
Sophie lifted the dress Abigail had become. It was exactly as she’d envisioned, and she happily added it to the other clothes she intended to buy and strolled out to pay for her new belongings. Kylee hurried along after her, rather confused as to where Abigail had gone, but she knew better than to speak before being spoken to by Sophie.
It wasn’t until they were stepping outside to deposit the clothes in the car that she piped up, “Should we wait for Abby?” she asked. Sophie shot her a look that should have told her to be quiet, but she pressed on, “C’mon Soph you know she’ll get all upset if we leave her behind.”
Sophie simply shut the car door and turned back towards the mall to continue with her favorite pastime, which of course only aggravated the normally subservient Kylee further.
“Sophie!”
This caused her to stop and turn. Never had Kylee raised her voice like that to her, and frankly, she was pretty sick of her whining. “You’re such an airhead, Kylee,” she said, snapping her fingers.
Immediately Kylee began to feel light-headed and bloated. Her cute tummy, already a smidge softer than her friends’ began to push out more and more, causing her shirt to begin riding up its surface. The sound was like that of squeaking rubber. Again, Sophie stared on in rapt fixation as her friend changed before her eyes.
Like Abby before her, Kylee could not speak out against this torment, but for the opposite reason. Rather than being squeezed out of breath, she had too much breath. But even if she could find the space to speak, her mouth stopped cooperating. She felt her lips stretch and twist, tying themselves into an unseemly knot that left her mute and groping at them uselessly. All the while her body continued to expand. Her skin was bright red, but not from the tension. Sophie approached to feel her belly’s surface to be sure, causing Kylee to stagger back in fear. She stumbled, but her fall was slow, and she bounced off her butt, which had been quietly blowing bigger and bigger behind her. A tear formed down the seam of her pants, which freed the girl from the painful pressure her pants had formerly been exerting on her, but also revealed how much her body had already changed. Her skin was rubbery and shiny from the belly down, and see-through. Nothing was inside of these parts but air, and Sophie grinned with an excitement that frightened Kylee above all else.
Now unimpeded, Kylee’s body inflated at an impressive pace. She was leaned back now, her butt now large enough to support such a position, and she got to get a good look as her belly swelled more and more. She pressed her hands into her belly, and they sank into it a good amount, eliciting a rubbery squeak! Panic began to grip the young woman when her hands refused to pull away from her swelling rubber belly, as though they were glued to it. Slowly but surely her air-filled body was absorbing her arms until they were nonexistent. Her legs fared no better, quickly fusing with her belly, which had consumed the poor girl’s body up to her neck now. She was a massive balloon with a human head, but even that wasn’t to last. Her head sank further and further into her body until the only remaining evidence of her prior face was her lips, twisted into a knot to keep the air in.
Sophie watched a bit longer but was a bit disappointed she didn’t float away – perhaps she hadn’t been specific enough that time. Ah well, a simple jab with something sharp and a resounding BANG! achieved the desired effect. This newfound mastery of her newfound powers gave her an idea. She and Dani were tied at one to one as far as she was concerned, and that was about to change, but first, she’d make sure her loser friends weren’t there to save her this time.
To someone like Sophie, Nova and Chloe didn’t register as much of a threat. As far as she was concerned, they were simpletons that aggravated her with their existence – so she wanted to give them more useful forms. Tracking down the promiscuous Nova was easy, and by luck or providence Chloe was with her, and Danielle was nowhere to be seen. This would be almost too easy.
The pair were talking and eating at their favorite lunch spot. Sophie watched them from a distance until Nova inevitably excused herself to use the bathroom, allowing Sophie a perfect opportunity to ambush the deviant.
Nova felt it before she saw it – a sudden pressure on her body that made her let out a soft but suggestive gasp. She whipped around and spotted Sophie with her prim and proper little smirk and her Barbie doll looking outfit. The pressure didn’t let up though, despite Sophie obviously not close enough to touch her. She opened her mouth to speak and was stunned when the sound that came out of her was more of a ding! It sounded like a text notification on a phone. She tried again, resulting in another ding! She tried to scream, only succeeded in performing a ringtone. Sophie was laughing now, but Nova couldn’t move her legs to shut her nasally snickers up. She felt the pressure increase steadily, beginning to crush her physically down. It felt like she was trapped in a quickly shrinking box.
Sophie watched as, similarly to her new blanket, Nova was being forced to take on a rather inhuman shape, but she was also being rapidly shrunk by the process. Her arms flattened at her sides, her head was squished against her chest, and her legs disappeared into her abdomen. She was a perfect rectangle now, and flattening quickly. The front of her body took on a dark, glassy shine, and she settled on the floor of the bathroom, motionless.
Nova’s world was dark. She could feel her body was cold and oddly shaped, and yet at the same time she felt as if she was living within her body, fully intact. The feeling was rather confusing, but she didn’t have too much time to dwell on that before she heard something. It was like a voice, but it shook her whole dark world while simultaneously sounding like a whisper inside her own head.

Sophie watched the phone light up with a logo for ‘NovaOS’ and began tapping away, setting things up on her new one-of-a-kind phone. The coolest feature of NovaOS was the AI assistant. So incredibly complex was this software that it could understand and execute nearly any command with little to no setup. Reading this, she had to try it.
“Okay Nova, take a selfie of me and post it to my twitter.” She commanded.
Nova’s mind was completely at the mercy of her programming, and it leveraged her understanding of human speech to open the camera app, snap a photo, and post it to twitter at the behest of her new owner.
Normally, Chloe wouldn’t have batted an eye about Nova taking so long in the bathroom, so she didn’t. She did, however, need to use the ladies’ room herself. She stood, smoothed out her dress, and strolled to the bathroom, bumping straight into Sophie who was playing on some new looking phone. She tried to duck past with a hurried apology, never wanting to confront Sophie in the way that Dani always had. She’d at least feel safer with Nova, who she assumed was inside.
“Hey, ditz,” Sophie said, following her inside and standing between her and the only door out.
“Oh, hey Sophie,” she greeted meekly, looking around for Nova.
“Looking for someone?” Sophie taunted, mulling over how to reveal Nova to her.
“Yeah, have you seen Nova?” She asked.
