Ashlyn and Zoe, Julie's roommates, were almost polar opposites. Ashlyn was a goth tomboy with hair dyed purple and cut short and messy, Zoe a cheerleader fashionista with long black hair. Still, they were friends, even if they had little in common. However, friends or not, Julie was a little sick of their style based arguments.
"Ashlyn, I don't get why you dye and cut your hair, I'd kill to have a shade of blonde like yours," Zoe sighed.
"And I don't get how anyone could stand to look like an explosion in a fuschia paint factory."
At least once a night the two seemed to wind up having a short debate about their chosen attire. Ashlyn derided Zoe's necklace, Zoe took shots at the studded belt. Skirts were mocked, and faded jeans criticised. So Julie had a plan....
"Hey, girls... Can you help me out with something for my coursework? Won't take a minute. It's about pendulums. I need two other people to watch and count the swings of one and tell me the numbers," she lied, her little trick ready to go.
It was a simple pendulum device, but she'd put a speaker in it to play a hypnotic induction. If the two went into trance, step two would begin.
And sure enough, keeping her own eyes off it, letting the two 'help', they were zonked out on the sofa as the pendulum slowly swung to a stop.
"Now, listen to the sound of my voice. Listen carefully to the instructions I will give you...."
She kept her voice calm, slow, and flat, placing her instructions and triggers into their minds, and then let them 'wake' up.
"Okay, thanks!" She said.
"...Huh? I didn't count anything," Zoe frowned.
"Sure you did, you both said 92."
"We did?" Ashlyn wondered.
"Yep. Well, you said 92 plus or minus some change...."
With that phrase, the two went glassy eyed, stood up, and went into each other's rooms. A few moments later, they walked back out.
Except Zoe now wore a black sleeveless top, a studded choker, dark eyeliner, fishnet stockings, and one of Ashlyn's rare skirts, a pleated and torn thing, worn over a pair of leather shorts. Ashlyn, in contrast, wore a pink dress with a ruffle skirt, white pantyhose, and bright red lipstick.
And then they awoke from their trances, saw each others appearances, looked at themselves, and gasped in shock.
"What the... How'd this happen?!" Ashlyn wondered in confusion, staring at the dress.
"I dunno! Wait, Julie? Did you do something?" Zoe realised, as their other room-mate stifled her laughter.
"Maybe?"
The frilly goth and black-clad fashionista glared at her.
"But remember the next part," she added, and the pair went blank eyed again, heading for the door, to walk campus in each other's styles. Julie hoped this stopped the nightly bickering for a while.
(It did, but only as they plotted a joint way to get Julie back.)
