Trapped chests were more than common in these old dungeons and caves, even if how precisely they'd got there wasn't always clear. But Yuffie had picked up a few tricks in all her years hunting materia.
First, the mimics. So uncommon when she'd been with Cloud and the rest they'd not actually found any, but when she ran solo they seemed to forget they were meant to be rare. But they weren't perfect. They often got the shades of their disguise wrong, or were a different type of chest from others in the area. And they sometimes had to open themselves up, so watching a suspect chest a few moments could reveal the truth.
Then there were the basic traps, explosions, darts, gas. She'd tripped a few before figuring it out getting injured, turned into a frog, or getting poisoned. The trick was a lot of them had a trigger spell, best visible with a scan spell.
And those ones, well, that's where a stick came into play. Like the one she currently observed. Her scan materia confirmed there was the telltale spell on the chest, and with careful prodding, she was lifting the lid...
She smirked as it clicked, and a puff of gas erupted. If she'd opened that by hand, it'd probably have turned her amphibian, poisoned her, petrified her, or some other unwanted effect. But now, it was harmless, and any goodies inside there as bait were hers.
"Alright, what's there for me," she wondered after the gas seemed to be gone, walking over and yanking the lid up all the way.
And her eyes widened to see the inside of the chest wasn't a handful of gil or a potion, but a strange set of spinning colours. She tried to look away from the shifting shades and shapes before her, but it was too late. She felt herself drawn to stare into it, each passing moment taking her deeper and deeper into the hypnotic trance.
And so there she stood, staring at the chest's true trap, entranced and left wide open to any monster that would wander along....
