Gardun fought down her giggles as she slid quietly through her bakery, her plan perfect. Her girlfriend Lotra was finishing up packing an order they were going to deliver, and this was a perfect time to add to the selfie collection.
Step one:
"Oh, I forgot something upstairs, can you finish up the ribbons?"
Step two:
Slip away, but double back and in the other door to the kitchens
Step three:
Rush from behind, take selfie while Lotra is too distracted to start the whole 'I don't like getting my picture taken' thing!
'I can call it "Me and my GF gettin' baked stuff ready"! Ooh, maybe "best bakery assistant"!' Gardun thought to herself.
She looked around the corner quickly, seeing a flash of green hair and Lotra's figure facing away, busy tying a ribbon on the last box.
This was the perfect chance for stage three! Wait, was it actually two stages, the rush and selfie? Stage three and four?
Never mind, time to rush!
Darting in, she slid in front of Lotra, raised her phone with the front-facing camera on, and hit the button as she gave a thumbs up beside the... hissing snake hair of Lotra's gorgon form?
"WAIT! NO!" Lotra shouted, but it was too late.
'Oh poop,' Gardun thought as she realised shemay have miscalculated this.
On the screen, was the snapshot with the preview, waiting for confirmation, Lotra's surprised green skinned face, and a reflection of the Gorgon's eyes. Immune to her own gaze, Lotra was fine, but Gardun's human eyes were not as protected. As in, not protected at all.
Frozen in place as she felt her body stiffening and hardening into grey stone, Gardun's locked-in visage was stuck facing the photo, her greying thumb hovering inanimate over the green tick to accept the preview. She saw in the picture a small glimmer of green in her own eyes, the magic of catching her girlfriend's gaze having just begun, but other than that...
'It's a pretty good picture! I mean, I guess I'm a statue for a few hours now but good picture! We'll call it a partial success!'
"Gardun, why'd you do that? You know I Glare when I'm surprised!" Lotra fumed at her petrified girlfriend, then groaned.
"...But then again you were heading 'upstairs' for something and I should have realised you were up to no good, and not dropped my human look!"
'Orrrr... I could have checked you hadn't dropped your disguise so my bad?'
"Or you could have checked I hadn't dropped the disguise!"
'Exactly!'
Lotra looked at the phone, sighing.
"...And I can't even get in confirm it, someone's rocky little thumb is in the way. Hope you enjoy the battery running out before then!"
'Wha?! Wait, nononono, it's a good photo!' Gardun fretted.
"Then again, I guess I need to go get this stuff delivered, by myself... And I can't leave you here. Where's that charger?" Lotra muttered, before wandering off.
A few moments later, she returned, and picked up the statufied form of her girlfriend.
"Let's put you somewhere a little less in the way until you turn back. And plug that phone in so you don't lose your picture."
'Yay, you're the best!'
Lotra placed her down in one of the pantries, near a wall socket that already held a charger, one of Gardun's post-it messages still above the plug saying 'CHARGE IT UP', left from when she'd been on some labelling craze and had slapped green notes saying what everything was for.
Unfortunately, it left Lotra with a dilemma - lock the door behind her and leave Gardun's statue there, safe, but stuck in the pantry if she turned back before Lotra finished the delivery. Or leave it unlocked, and hope none of the cleaners who were coming later would freak out at a statue of the bakery owner sitting around or worse yet disturb her while petrified? Maybe the 'wet floor' sign beside Gardun would work to keep them from knocking her over?
...No, she'd have to lock the door.
"...Great, you've put me between a rock and a hard place, and you're the rock. Aha, I know!"
Gardun's stone eyes watched her rush off, wondering what her girlfriend had planned, only for her to come back with a few books.
"There, you turn back before I'm back you can at least read something, I know your phone gets no signal on the wifi or mobile in here."
'Aw, you're the best, Lotra!'
Lotra stood back and admired her handiwork in ensuring the safety of her statue-girlfriend, as well as briefly appreciating how cute she was in stone. She jumped up as she looked at the time though, realising she was going to be late with the delivery if she didn't move.
"...Gotta go, hon, but, uh... yeah, bye!" Lotra said, scribbling something on a post-it pad and sticking it to Gardun's head.
'Ooh, what's it say?! Hey, Lotra, hang on, what's it say!? Ah, wait, you can't hear me. Oh well, bye!' Gardun envisioned herself waving as her girlfriend locked the door to the pantry and presumably went off to make the delivery - but of course, her statue stayed still in the thumbs-up selfie-smile pose.
'...Still, it's a realllly nice photo! Gonna drive me nuts wondering what that note says...'
And so she stood, for a few hours at least, smiling in stone, with a small note saying 'SORRY - TAKE CARE' on her petrified head, as Lotra began the delivery on her lonesome.
