You sigh happily as you lie down on your couch. Even with the heavy rain bouncing off the windows and the roof, it's relaxingly quiet.
Not for the first time you're glad your cottage is a good distance from the main town. It's not that you don't like being around other ponies, it's just come the morning and things would get louder and louder, while at night there would always be small noises. The house in town you'd first looked at when you were moving in had been beside the train tracks, and you just can't imagine what that would have been like. On clear nights you could still faintly hear the trains horns if you left the windows open even here, and it was almost a kilometre from the track.
Even if they were open tonight the storm brought a strange peace to things. Even as it roared and pounded the earth with water, it drowned all other noises. Leaving just the silence of the rain.
Until you heard it. A faint rumbling noise. Sitting up in confusion you see a bright flash in the sky out of your window. You watch as it turns into something burning and falling, and the rumbling grows louder. Transfixed with confusion and growing terror you stare as the fireball gets larger, the noise gets louder, and things begin to shake in your house.
You scream as it flies over, roaring like a dragon that's got a tree branch in its paw. Things are really shaking, including you, but the strange fireball simply passes over. The rumbling starts to die down.
And then the loudest bang you've ever heard in your life. Louder than any firework, louder than a sonic rainboom. The shaking goes insane, the lights go out for a second, and things start falling over. When it dies down it takes you a few moments to realise the high pitched whine you hear now is yourself but you can't stop for a few moments.
When you do, still trembling, you look out your back door. Through the rain you can see flames in the Everfree forest... in fact you see things burning in a trail all the way to the forest. Quickly you fly outside, seeing that none of the burning objects hit your home or anything nearby, but you can hear the panicky cries of your chickens. They haven't ran out of the coop though.
You look back at the fires, like beacons leading to the biggest fires of all. As the rain and wind come down soaking your wings and fur, you first think that you should go back inside. Somepony else heard that, surely. They'd come and make sure it was nothing dangerous.
But then... somepony or some animal might be hurt out there...
