Just after midnight in a bedroom in Odaiba, Japan, Hikari Kamiya was unsurprisingly in bed and theoretically asleep.
"Hey."
Until she thought she heard a voice...
'I'm just tired and hearing things...'
"Hey, lady."
'Wait... I'm really hearing that...'
"Hey, hey, Lady, hey."
She now felt a weight on her chest.
She opened her eyes.
'What the...'
"Hi." The small creature on her chest said.
She opened her mouth to shout out a scream, only to have silence escape.
"I wouldn't bother with that, Kari. Even if we were letting you make noises we removed your bed from the timestream to talk to you."
Her eyes darting left, she saw that her bedroom carpet seemed to have two small creatures identical to the one on her chest, but behind them everything seemed to be grey. The distant clock was stuck with the second hand inanimate, and in the world of grey, she could see Gatomon lying asleep.
But around her bed there was colour, and light. And the three creatures.
"Oh, and I wouldn't be so scared. We're quite harmless to you, but we are quite annoyed." The third little creature said. It sounded female.
Kari tried to speak again, but once more, nothing happened.
'Oh no... They're annoyed about the wishing powers...'
"Uh, no. We're not. That Digi-Gnome chose to do that, and besides, it was a native Digi-Gnome..." The second creature said.
'What?'
"Hey, hey, boss, hey..."
The second one sighed.
"Fine, I'll let her talk. Just stop impersonating that damn videogame..."
"Spaaaaace!"
"I said quit it!"
Kari blinked, and then tried to speak.
"...You guys are Digi-Gnomes, right?"
The one that had been called Boss nodded.
"Yes, we are. I'm Ram, the one on your chest is Node, and the one beside me is Port. "
Port nodded, Node waved.
"Why are you guys here then?" Kari asked.
"There are two kinds of Digi-Gnome. Natives, created only from data in their home dimensions, and then us, created from the convergence of all data in all the dimensions." Port reported, still sounding female.
Kari blinked.
"It's true." Ram said.
Kari blinked again.
"Um... Well, why did you remove me from time?"
"To talk to you, lady!" Node said.
"Node, stop it." Port warned.
The little creature sighed sadly.
"He is correct though. We wish to discuss the mess you created."
Kari gulped nervously.
"Um... I didn't mean it..." She began.
"Oh, we knew that." Node said.
"And... And I really was sorry I did it..."
"Only natural..." Port agreed.
"I... I tried to fix it."
"Indeed you did." Ram smiled.
"So... So what happens now? Are you going to help me fix it properly? I know I left some boys as girls and stuff..."
"Well... how should I put this... In reverse order, yes you left some boys girls, yes we'll fix it, and what happens now is we call you a complete idiot!"
Kari recoiled at the last words from Ram.
"I... I'm sorry..."
"Sorry?! Sorry doesn't help the fact we have to edit one dimension back to normal and make a new one at the same time!" Port fumed
"...A new... What?"
Node jumped up to stare her in the eyes.
"...The way you made the wish you created new people and deleted old people at the same time. We can't allow the originals to be gone and we can't delete the new people either. We also need the original dimension to remain normal but it gets complicated."
"Uh, how complicated? I don't understand as it is..." Kari fretted.
"You did not, Kari. And that's the trouble. Basically, the problem is the changes left no trace of the original person. Had you just turned them into girls without changing the past too, it would have been no problem for us, just a lot of confusion as to why boys became girls. But now there are girl versions of those boys in this dimension and we need to save those versions. But we have to save the boys too." Port explained.
Kari was lost.
"So what we did was in the original dimension we fixed it all. Gave your new counterpart there a talking to as well. She was rather confused too. As for this one, we're keeping the changes and the originals where we can. The Janitor is fine, and so is Natsumi... but Jun going down in age is going to be pointless now..."
"Um... Why?" Kari asked.
Port, Node, and Ram all grinned.
"Well... Davis has a new twin sister. Just like Takeru has a new little sister. In fact there are a surprisingly large number of twins or new siblings in your school now... Oh, sure, we changed a few ages up and down for the girls and maybe tweaked some histories since they only exist because of you but congratulations, Hikari. You just created yourself three hundred new female schoolmates. But don't worry. You also have about sixteen new female teachers... But we had to make the school bigger, watch that some families weren't put into poverty... Such a mess..."
'...Now I feel even worse about that...'
"And so you should. It took us minutes to process that! We live in MILLISECONDS, Hikari! We're pure data beings formed from the very code of the universe!" Node fumed.
"Even coming into a dimension is strange for us. It's as if it's taking us years to do this conversation." Port sighed.
"I'm sorry, okay! I learned my lesson, I should be a lot more careful and not go crazy with power!" Kari wailed.
"Oh, we know. But we want you to have reminders of that lesson. You and the janitor are the only things that you changed that will stay normal..."
Kari blinked.
"...But then I won't know anything in this new world!"
"Nope. And if we made it so you did remember you'd not have a lesson to learn, so you'll have to get to know the new girls all by yourself. They know you so you should be able to bluff it.." Ram said.
Kari thought for a moment.
"Hey, wait, what about Norun? Some of what she said..."
"Ah, well, before you worry about the things she was saying? She has a limited world view. Funny given she pretty much is a world..." Port grumbled.
"...To cut a long story short Norun can only speak for her own dimension, and a new Norun had to be made for this one. So your Norun now only spoke for this one and... Look, it's complicated, reality patching is hard to comprehend with a monodimensional mind. "
"...Okay. So... basically now I'm in a universe with more girls in my school? Doesn't that mean there's less boys?"
All three gnomes nodded.
Another thought hit her.
"Wait, the girl version of Davis, she... And Tai! He became..."
Port dismissed this with a wave as Ram spoke.
"Don't worry, all fixed. Your brother's the way he was before you made him jealous, and Dorika was stopped from doing anything stupid by her brother. Made two versions of that game you altered, and all that stuff. Basically we made sure that nothing changed and everything did. And we're only letting you remember what used to be so you can know what changed."
Kari nodded.
"Um... Thank you. That's better than the other things... I felt really bad about the boys and teachers I changed female but didn't know them."
"Don't worry. Oh, but because your school is bigger you all wear uniforms now. We made you a bunch of new Serafuku...." Node began.
"WHAT?!" Kari screeched. She hated uniforms, especially skirts!
The three Gnomes burst into laughter.
"We're kidding. There's only the old dress code." Port chuckled.
"Well, don't take this the wrong way but we hope to never have to see you again, Hikari. Take care." Ram said, and then vanished.
In the blink of an eye, the light in the small bubble was gone, the grey was gone, and the clock moved. Gatomon's soft snores began to reach Kari's ears once more, and the confused girl blinked.
"...If that was all a dream I think I need to see a shrink."
The next morning, Kari remembered it all clearly. Whilst the lack of Serafuku in her clothing was welcome, and everything else seeming normal was fine, she wondered if there was some way to check up on what the changes could have been.
Then she remembered her phone. Despite her mother looking at her with confusion, she proceeded to check it instead of eating her breakfast.
There were quite a few new names in her contacts list. Including a Daiko, a Takeko, and a few other names she could link to being feminine variants of boys in her classes. Boys she hadn't really known, but apparently in this new world, knew their siblings.
"...I wish this was easier to understand." She sighed.
She looked up, and saw her whole family was now in the grey frozen world.
Node was now stealing her toast.
"...Uh, I didn't mean that literally. "
The Digi-Gnome looked up.
"Hm? Oh, no, it's just you weren't eating this so..."
She groaned. Her breakfast was only saved when an irate Port popped up and dragged Node away. But she had still lost a slice of toast in the process...
"Good, Hikari, I thought you weren't eating. I heard about how young girls these days are trying to avoid meals to keep thin but honestly, when I was your age I just went jogging..." Her mother began to speak.
Hikari smiled, tried to humour her, and hoped that she wouldn't look to weird in a school of people she didn't know, but knew her...
