" Aperture Science Oversized Super-colliding Extra-dimensional Portal Device registered as a 'huge success'. Over nine thousand items of extra-dimensional technology acquired during seventy-six day operation of portals..."
Currently, in the depths of Aperture Science, there was no one left to listen. There were no more human test subjects, but that did not mean science was done yet. Work was underway as one experiment ended.
The many robots she had built as the extra-dimensional portal was constructed had helped. Not many of them had survived, true, but it was in the name of science. Besides, they were easy to recycle.
It had been child's play to hack into the Black Mesa systems years before, but until now looking through the data had been a low priority. But with the right combinations of Aperture Science discoveries and the Black Mesa theories, she had eventually built a working Aperture Science Oversized Super-colliding Extra-dimensional Portal Device. It was built effectively as a large Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device that instead of creating localised space portals would reverse the polarity of the neutron flow to create unlocalised space and time portals.
After the third one exploded and caused an unknown planet to become taken over by some manner of Animal King, she concluded that perhaps the giant German Stick Grenades were not needed and if anything may have been agitating the Unminiature Miniature Black Holes she was using to power the device. She reverted to miniature ones, and though they did appear to explode, this time they did not cause an overload but merely some amusing popping noises.
"...Two hundred and forty test subject volunteers volunteered involuntarily during seventy-six day operation of portals..."
And what subjects! From different worlds, different cultures, different species, different dimensions! Combined with all the new technology and science to assess, it was a treasure-trove of science...
She briefly wondered if she overused the word science, but elected to file this for a later experiment. But for now, she was intrigued
Some of the data she had obtained seemed to indicate that very strange reactions occurred with the technology in combination with living tissue. It appeared in many cases ways to reverse the conditions were possible... but would need research.
Some of the technology had been noted as being magical. Magic was merely science that was not understood yet.
Much of the "magic" seemed to cause the strange reactions.
She had to test this... for science...
"...Run assessments of volunteered subjects involuntarily volunteered during operation of Aperture Science Oversized Super-colliding Extra-dimensional Portal Device to determine best pairings for co-operative testing."
She had previously determined that male subjects were of no use, and had decided not to volunteer any such subjects. The two hundred and forty females in storage had their brains scanned, assessed, in one case accidentally swapped for fifteen minutes, and then the calculations began.
One hundred and twenty pairs had been determined to be the best possible variations for co-operative testing. Clashing personalities, matching personalities, neutral personalities, loners, the attention starved, the secure, the insecure, the sane, the insane, Manchester United Supporters, subjects with lactose intolerance, subjects who liked cheese...
Yes. There was so much science to be done it almost made no sense at first glance.
But she was GlaDOS.
And where there was science, there was a way...
Now... to pick the best co-operative test subjects. She quickly narrowed her group down to ten possible test pairings using a meticulous process.
"Eeeny meeny miney moe, catch an Aperture Science Involuntary Extra-dimensional Volunteer Test Subject by her toe. If she squeals, assess suspended animation protocols to ensure pain centres are kept dormant, you are not it..."
