Davis was frustrated once again, and had decided to head for a random place in the Digital World to vent. Veemon had wisely stood back and let Davis go on ahead. He had emerged in a small swampy area, and had begun taking frustrations out on random plants and puddles.
"Why is it every time I try to ask her out she's busy? Homework? I don't spend the whole night doing mine worrying about grades and I get on fine!"
Veemon's absence meant no one could point out he routinely only scraped past while Kari was chasing straight A grades.
"If it's not that it's something else! Photography club, tired, was going to see a different movie... "
His thoughts took a dark turn, to a yellow-haired rival.
"...What if she went with him?!"
He picked up one of the few rocks he could find and threw it in a nearby pool in anger. The algae was blasted away by the splash, and revealed a quick glimmer of gold. Daisuke blinked as he saw the gold hidden by the cloud of dirt his rock kicked up.
"...Wonder what that was?"
Moments later, his shoes and socks by the side of the water, he was reaching in and pulling out...
"...Oh crap."
It was a lamp. And he'd just rubbed it. He remembered what had happened when Kari found one of these. The damned thing had turned his girl into a gold statue! Well, and TK and Tai and Sora because they got too close to the statues before the Digimon realised the Lampmon had moved places in the desert after granting the wishes, and Yolei had eventually found it and saved everyone.
He'd only learned of it second hand because he'd got lost in the desert then, but he knew what this lamp probably was. Since it began pouring yellow smoke, he was probably right.
Even without Veemon there to remind him, Davis sighed and decided the best way out of this was to play nice. Kari had been rude, apparently, so she got turned to gold. He didn't fancy spending a while as a lump of metal or a tree or something... or a fish... Or... Well, there were a lot of swamp themed things he could become.
The genie from the lamp however surprised Davis.
"Hello! Are you my new master?" The strange Lampmon said in a high-pitched voice.
It was green, had a wisp of purple smoke for a tail, and wore a turban like a normal Lampmon. But it also was thinner, and did not have a beard. It also had a puple and gold top on, for this Lampmon was female.
Veemon wasn't there to tell Davis this wasn't a normal Lampmon, but would have made little difference except to draw her attention to him.
"Oh! A human! An adorable one too!" The Lampmon said as she glomped the surprised Gogglehead.
"Uh, thanks... But, you're a Lampmon, right?" Davis asked nervously.
The Digimon withdrew and nodded.
"Yep! Wait, you seem nervous..."
Davis froze in panic.
"...Did you meet a bad Lampmon before?" She continued.
"Um... No, a friend of mine did. It was in a desert and..."
The Digimon laughed.
"Oh then that Lampmon would have gone crazy sitting in an isolated area for so long!"
Davis wisely did not point out the Lampmon before him had also sat in an isolated area for a long time
"Okay... So, uh... What now?"
The Lampmon grinned.
"Well, master, I can grant three wishes. Once I grant them all I go somewhere else in my swamp and you're no longer my master. Simple, no?"
Davis shrugged.
"Um, okay... So, what do I say?"
The Lampmon giggled.
"Say that you wish for whatever you wish for! You can't wish for more wishes or for anyone to come back from the dead... but you can wish for someone to be dead." The Lampmon said, not breaking her cheerful demeanor even mentioning the rather literal death wish issue.
Davis however considered it carefully.
"...I wish I was closer to Kari!" He said.
The Lampmon nodded.
"Kari's the girl you like, right? Easy!"
She was about to snap her fingers, when Daisuke suddenly realised something.
His wish had been very, very, stupid.
"Wait, I don't mean like physically closer to her, um... Like I don't want to suddenly be in the same room as her! Especially if she's in the shower! Well, maybe if she's in the shower... Agh! No! Bad! Bad thoughts!"
He had ranted, and missed the snap of fingers. He had also missed his voice changing in pitch too.
He had missed his hips getting a little wider and his stomach a little slender. His chest getting a little bit larger, and his hair becoming straighter and shifting on his head. He missed his clothes shifting and morphing. He missed his legs and arms getting a little thinner, and he missed the fact his eyes changed colour.
She soon noticed it a second later when she looked down and saw pink, white and khaki.
"Aagh! You turned me INTO Kari?!"
"Nope! Your hair is a shade darker than hers! Oh, and some of the proportions are slightly different. Kari has a smaller waist and nose, and she..."
Davis zoned out as the Lampmon finally got to the point.
"...and so you're only CLOSE to Kari! You're not identically her!"
"It... It wasn't what I meant though. Can I be back to me again?" Davis said, also noting that Kari's voice from his mouth sounded a little higher pitched.
The Lampmon nodded.
"Sure!"
Davis waited.
"Oh, you mean that's a wish? You have to say so."
The boy-turned-into-his-girl sighed.
"I wish I was back to normal."
A snap of the fingers and a few moments later, Davis was back to Davis.
"Two down, master. One more?"
Davis paused. He had to be clear with this. No room for error...
"Okay. I wish I was Kari's partner. I don't mean swap my mind with Gatomon, I don't mean make me her partner in a class project, I mean I want to be with her all the time, I want to protect her, and I want us to share a close bond. Got it?"
"Oh! Okay, easy!"
She snapped her fingers, and Davis began to have a shrinking feeling as the world grew a little taller. He looked down... and he was growing white fur. A telltale prickling at the base of his spine indicated a tail was growing, a tingling on the side of his head heralded the repositioning and enlarging of his ears, and the strange feeling of his jaw and nose expanding slightly indicated a snout. His hair remained brown, and in the same style, atop his head. He retained his goggles also.
With his clothes mostly now bagging around his shrinking, furred form, Davis sighed.
"Oh... Great. This isn't what..."
"...I meant."
He then found himself no longer in the swamp. He was instead in Kari's room, and he was not the only one surprised by this.
"What the?! Where did you come fro... Davis?!" Gatomon gasped at seeing the distinctive hair and goggles.
Davis blinked in confusion.
Gatomon and Kari stared.
"Um... Long story..." Davis began.
And he tried to explain... Edited, of course, since now she was right in front of him it was rather difficult to explain what happened before or what he was wanting. And of course he had to think an excuse for why he was there alone. The only reason it was long was his pauses to think of good lies. Eventually, the girls deciphered the message.
"So, let me get this straight. You found a Lampmon, and after a few wrong wishes you're now you're a Gatomon..." Kari sighed.
"That's pretty much it." Davis nodded, wishing he'd just said that now. And then he realised something
"Um, this might sound weird but... Gatomon, am I a boy Gatomon?"
The female Gatomon sighed.
"Yes. And apart from that dumb hair quite cute by Gatomon standards. You have larger ears, no tufts, and your tail only has two prongs. Oh, and smaller eyes, but they're brown like your normal ones. But really, just sniff yourself, you smell like a boy." She replied.
"...What? What do you mean? I was just in a swamp!"
"Not like that, idiot! Your scent! Can't you smell me?!"
"Well, I can smell lots of things actually now you mention it. There's like a peachy smell that... I think it's coming from Kari, and you seem to smell of it too, Gatomon, but there's another smell I can't really describe under it... It's like you smell angry or something..."
"I am! And for the record the peachy smell is because Kari spilled her shampoo on me when she was showering." Gatomon said.
There was a pause.
"...Okay, she dragged me into the shower with her because I was chasing a rat in a dumpster outside, okay!? I was bored!"
"And you were stinking enough for me to smell it and I'm a human."
Gatomon stuck her tongue out at the only human present and huffed. Kari giggled a little before continuing to speak with Davis.
"Well, at least you're still able to move. Wait, what were the other two wishes? And what did you wish for that turned you into a Gatomon and put you in... my... room..." Kari continued, trailing off.
Davis didn't have to look at Gatomon to realise she was very angry, he could smell it.
"It... It was nothing like that! I'd wished to be close to you!"
Kari glared at him.
"What do you mean by that?"
"Like... Close. Like, uh, together. Partners... Um, I first asked to be close to you and the Lampmon turned me into you... I fixed that and then I wanted to be close to you as a partner, not similar looking to you and..." He babbled, fearful of the two angry females.
"...What did you do while you were me?" Kari almost hissed.
"Panicked! What would you do if you'd turned into me?!"
Kari sighed, and calmed down a little.
"Okay, fair point. I guess I believe you. But to be honest if I did turn into you once I stopped freaking out I'd probably streak through the school or something."
Gatomon and Davis both stared at the only currently-human present.
"What? It's not like it'd be me. It'd be Davis."
Davis shook his head.
"Look, can we just calm down and go back to the swamp? I made a stupid wish or two and now I'm a Digi-cat!"
"Okay. But if this one turns me into gold I swear I will hurt you." Kari agreed.
They soon reached the swamp, both Gatomons trailing behind Kari as they went to where Davis thought he had last been.
"Okay... Here's your clothes at least. So, the Lampmon relocated in the swamp. I'll hold onto your clothes since, well, when you get turned back it looks like... Heh..." Kari chuckled.
"...Uh, okay, but I hold onto your camera. Especially after that joke back in your room..." Davis intejected.
"...Fine, but yeah. We should split up and find the lamp, then me or Gatomon will try and use it. " Kari finished.
"Sounds good to me. Let's go. Oh, and Camera."
Davis took the device, and the three split apart. However, after a few seconds running, Davis found himself moved in place again.
"...Davis? I thought you went the other way?" Kari asked, puzzled.
"I... I did... I just wound up here when you were out of... sight..."
Kari frowned.
"...Okay, stay here. I want to check something."
She walked away, and after about fifty meters, even though she was still visible to Davis, he was moved to beside her.
"...Okay, stay there again. And look the opposite direction from where I'm going."
This time, she moved out of his sight, and again, after about fifty meters, he was moved.
"So... I teleport if you get fifty meters away from me?" Davis realised as Kari explained how it happened from her perspective.
"Yeah. What did you say with that wish exaclty?"
"I... I said I wanted to be with you all the time... And share a close bond."
Kari pondered this.
"Close bond... Davis, I'm going to try something. And did you know I can't swim?" She said.
Before Davis could even wonder what she meant, and before he would remember she could swim, she jumped into a nearby pool that looked very, very deep, and went under.
"Kari!" He yelped, feeling himself getting warmer. Something like an adrenaline rush hit him, making him feel bigger... stronger...
he dived in after her, only to find she was coming to the surface of her own accord.
"Why did you do that?!" Davis almost screamed as the soaked girl smirked.
"Easy, Davis. Look at yourself."
He did so.
"W...What? I digivolved?! What am I?!"
He was larger, humanoid, and had wings, as well as a strange hat, a strange purple... thing on one arm, and what seemed to be a sword mounted on his wrist. He was thinking "Angemon" but it seemed different...
"Yeah, you've become a MagnaAngemon. That makes sense, you were a Champion before so you'd got Ultimate. It looks like we do share a bond after all... You got turned into a second partner for me."
"Kari! Did something happ...en?" A voice shouted, and the transformed former boy and his apparent new Digidestined partner looked to see Angewomon staring at them in confusion.
"...Huh. So, why did I digivolve as well?" Gatomon wondered.
Kari had climbed out of the water, and now carried her own clothes. She had instead put Davis's clothing on, as they were dry. Both Digimon had already informed her she was a moron and could have gotten herself in serious trouble, and had gone back down to their previous levels.
"I'd guess it's because you both work off the same Digivice. But not for long hopefully. It's just splitting up is a little difficult because of the magical teleporting Davis." Kari responded.
"Yeah... Um, I think maybe we should get the others to come and help. Just... Don't let Davis explain what he did or we'll be here for hours." Gatomon said.
Davis sighed.
"Just call them in and then we start looking while we wait for them." He said, ignoring his hopefully temporary co-partner.
