My name is Nico Robin. That hasn't changed, but a short time ago, I did. I was a fairly normal human in a biological sense apart from my Devil Fruit powers, and then, suddenly, I was turning to stone.
I don't know how, or why. I'd been separated from the rest of the crew here, and I had thought I had my way back to them as the sun set when I felt my feet grow heavy. I had looked down, and they had turned grey, my boots too.
I tried to wiggle my toes, but nothing happened. I could still feel them somehow, which made me think perhaps they weren't stone but just immobile below my boots. I watched, unwilling to move my feet in case the stone portions should break off, and then I realised I didn't need to. Using the abilities given to me by the Hana Hana no Mi, I copied my lower leg.
To my surprise, the copy limb had a stone foot attached. I could see a seam of darker grey just at the edge of my skin and the stone, which I gave a cautious prod. The area felt warm around the dark grey line, but felt far colder the further I went down the stone foot. It was about six inches above my ankle, and crawling up the copy limb. Looking at my boot, the stone line there seemed to roughly correspond.
I removed the copy limb and then returned it, seeing that it returned the same as before, half-rock. I couldn't help but wonder why the cloned foot of stone didn't break off, but I presumed perhaps the grey line of whatever was petrifying me was trying to keep me intact, after giving a stone toe a prod and feeling a numb sensation of the touch. I removed the limb again, reabsorbing it, only for the stone effect to surprisingly burst forth all the way up past my knees. I gasped in surprise, confused.
I had no facts in front of me as to what was causing this in the first place, but the effect was making itself speed up. The new line was moving slower than the burst, but faster than before it. It didn't take long for the top of my boots to turn to stone, which meant the rest of my legs weren't far behind. I wondered how it was going to react to my dress. Would the wave go under or spread onto it?
I tried to use my devil fruit powers again, but it seemed now the effect of the wave prevented their use. I prodded at a stone part of my leg, and could feel a numb sensation of the finger prod the leg. That seemed to provoke another burst of the wave, shooting up and under my dress at first, only for the stone wave to somehow spread onto it.
So, it seemed that any feeling or sensation on the stone was causing it to speed up. Now, I needed to figure out a way to slow it down. The effect was about to reach my waist, the line moving twice as fast now, about half an inch every second. The lower part of my dress was as grey as my boots and legs now.
I tried to call out for someone, but no one seemed to be near. I realised at that point how much danger I really was in here. What happened when that wave hit my lungs and heart? Or even my brain if I stayed alive that long? Would I become inanimate rock? I reasoned not. I could still feel my stone extremities, even if of course they wouldn't move.
I had no ideas on how to stop it, and was about to cry out again when it seemed the wave reached my lungs. Looking down I saw the wave moving up my chest, and my effort to cry out became a whisper. I realised I wasn't breathing and that my pulse had stopped, but somehow I wasn't dying. The effect of the petrification was keeping me intact. Soon enough, it had reached my shoulders, and it spilled down my arms like liquid, turning them to stone in moments.
From the neck down, I was stone, and I could feel that the hair going down below my neck was rock too. I tried to glance down, feeling my neck lock in place as the wave spread up. It advanced, and I could do nothing but feel that sensation turning everything below to rock. It neared my eyes, and for a second I saw the grey in the corner of my vision.
Then, blackness.
But only for a second. As the wave went past, I found I could still see, but staring rigidly forward. My eyes must have been stone now, I reasoned, and could feel the wave finishing off the last few inches of flesh and blood.
And then, it ended. I had a numb sensation all over, but I still had my senses, as locked in place as I was. From head to toe, clothes to skin to beyond, I was solid rock. I could feel myself slowly cooling down all over.
That had been fifteen minutes ago.
I have a lot of questions I can't answer still. What had happened to me? Why had it happened? Had it affected the others? Now I thought back, the moon had begun to rise just as I felt the sensation. Maybe the island itself was cursed in some way. Maybe in the morning I, and presumably the others, would turn back to flesh. And I'm sure we would then get away as fast as we could, like any others who landed here likely did.
I certainly don't want to stay here forever. I'd rather study archaeology and history, not stand here for the rest of time as both for someone else to find who knows how many centuries down the line.
But really, all I can do is wait. Not like I have much choice now I'm a statue, apparently. On the plus side, that rising moon was giving me a nice view of the valley below now. There were worse places to be trapped as a statue (hopefully) overnight, I reasoned. When, or if, I turned back though, I had no desire to find those worse places...
