At the dawn of the Digital World, day very nearly did not break.
As the first of the data life forms that were to become Digimon took shape, one in particular emerged powerful. He was Phelesmon, and to the other nascent data life forms he whispered promises of power. He granted their wishes, and his price was the soul of each who took his offer.
As he harvested souls, he took control of the empty shells. His army of mindless drones grew and grew, with the remaining Digimon realising the threat almost too late to stop him. The rapidly evolving and forming Digital World, still in its infancy, had discovered the concept of evil.
The concept of good came soon after, to counter this threat. Ten Angelic beings, five Angemon, five Angewomon. They confronted Phelesmon, his mindless drones swarming them. But the powerful angels could each cast waves of the enslaved creatures aside, and Phelesmon realised he had to take the fight to his new foe himself, even though four of his angelic enemies had fallen to his puppets.
His Demon's Shout aimed at the nearest two Angels to him tore apart his own slaves, before mortally wounding the two servants of good. Their four comrades rallied as Phelesmon leapt into battle. An Angewomon readied her Celestial Arrow. His Black Statue attack encased her inside the form of an Obsidian demon for eternity. Seeking to end the battle, he readied a Demon's Shout. One Angemon took the full force of the attack, sparing his comrades with his sacrifice.
The last two Angels attacked him directly. Phelesmon weaved and dodged their constant attacks, never tiring. For days and nights, the battle raged. The Angemon and Angewomon refused to give up, even as they grew weaker. Phelesmon fed his power from the many souls he reaped, letting the Angels burn up their own energy. Eventually, he tired of the battle, and elected to end it. A Demon's Shout felled the Angewomon in a flash, and as he readied his Black Statue, his victory was near. With a single motion, it was over. Four of the Angels were destroyed utterly. Two would stand forever inside the black demonic shapes that had entombed them.
Or so Phelesmon thought. For from the chaos and disorder of the battle, the Digital World had one last Angelic representative to send forth and prevent the victory of darkness at the dawn of its existence. One last angel. Lucemon.
The new angel shrugged off the Demon Shouts. The new angel burst free from the Black Statues. For days, it took the attacks. It never tired. Until, as Phelesmon exhausted his own reserves of stolen power, the Lucemon made a single attack. Ten spheres of light. One for each Angel he had struck down. The Grand Cross utterly obliterated the Phelesmon.
The chaos and disorder of the new world came to an end. Order and Harmony would take its place. But the fallout of the battle would haunt the Digital World forever. Remnants of the evil of Phelesmon would linger as corrupt data, giving life to viruses, and more evil as that data multiplied. The lingering evil leaking from the black statues would inspire the shape of VenomMyotismon, almost a mirror of the demonic forms that entombed the two angels.
But the remnants of the Angels lingered too. That pure data would do the same as the Viruses. And though the Viruses multiplied faster, there had been more purity spilled that day to compensate. As the evil collected to be strong enough to pose a threat, more good was there to stop it. Both grew in power and abilities, both grew in numbers. It would be a balance, the effects of the constant battles from then on keeping the two opposing sides at roughly even strength overall.
In a way, the first battle of the Digital World never ended. Though the combatants were long gone, except those two lingering monuments of evil that encased good, as long as the two sides stayed in balance, it never would end.
