Everyone in the order knows the history.  It started in the 400’s with a Cardinal in Turkey.  The world thought he he died and they dubbed him Saint Nicholas.  He was the best of them.  He carried out the mission of Christmas for over a millennium before the power corrupted him.

There was a panic when it happened and a replacement was rushed up through the ranks.  I agree that he had promise.  His flamboyance was concerning.  He insisted on a code name: Father Christmas.  He conducted himself more like Dionysus than the British Lord he started as.  By 1800 it was clear he didn’t have what it took.  He was replaced too but at least he stayed off the naughty list.

Then from out of nowhere came Chris Kringle.  He was a reformed sprit of somewhat questionable repute who may have had a connection to the Krampus.  That was investigated but never fully adjudicated.  In hindsight I should probably pull those files and give them more of a look.

Anyway, Kringle was a miracle.  He had it all.  He had the personality.  He was larger than life.  And nobody took to Christmas Magic like him.   Honestly the first time we met I get my knees weaken from the allure of his charm and his dominance over the mystical powers of the season.

He was handed the keys to the kingdom and my God he did not disappoint.

Christmas was an overnight sensation.  He changed his name to Santa Claus, which was a bit odd, but nobody was second guessing hin by that point.  Every move he made sold out on Christmas cards and in carols.  And as technology advanced, Santa kept up.  His name was the most popular name in every medium.  He was almost even bigger than Christ himself.

THAT was something the Order shouldn’t have missed.

In the 1970’s we made our move on Claus but it was way too late for that.  He had become too strong.  My team was getting picked apart before we even landed at the North Pole.

But we fought on.

Somehow I managed to get past the elite guard and found myself face to face with Santa.  He was NOT the man I’d met before, but he still made me delirious with his aura.  My feeble attack was pitiful at best.  Santa took me down hard.

Santa sent the survivors of my team back to the Order with a message which was received and understood. Santa was in charge and not to be fucked with.  The Order hunkered down.  I waited for a rescue but one never came.

Everyday in this open-aired pine tree dungeon is the same.  Biting cold and stinging wind that laughs at your misery.  The occasional visit of the deranged elves.  They always try out their new toys on the Naughty List.  The red and white striped candy I’ve been chained too these decades hasnt aged anymore than I have in this mystic pocket world between reality and a nightmare.  The only thing that changes are the people.  Not that they’re different from each other.  One sinner after another.  Santa feeds off their naughtiness until they’ve been cleansed and returns them to the lives filled with Christmas joy.

That was Santa’s downfall. He thought he could take on everyone’s naughtiness and not be changed by it.

Today does hold the promise of something uncommon. There’s a new person for the Naughty List and Santa is delivering her himself. It makes sense. Shes pretty. Brunette. She looks weak as she stumbles and lands in the snow. Just Santa’s type.

But I notice something that I don’t think Santa does. The new girls eyes dash around and take in details. Most just grovel at the Master. Not this one. She has to be jerked back into her feet.

Does she actually WANT to be here? If so, that’ll change. But for now, maybe I can use that.

Santa chains her to a candy cane post near mine. Her eyes find my face and we make eye contact. Ah-ha. You see it “new girl.” Santa jas me gagged. I’m the only one.

That’s because I know Santa’s secret. Come help me and I’ll tell it to you. And maybe we can stop this corrupt Christmas tyrant together.
