At the bustling airport, a little girl named Emma sat anxiously by herself, waiting for her parents who had stepped away to grab some snacks. She clutched her small bag tightly, her eyes flickering back and forth between the departing flights and the crowd of people. She was used to airports; this was not her first trip, but today something felt different. The air felt heavier, almost as if something was going to change.
A soft voice interrupted her thoughts. "Chào bé, con đang chờ ai?"(Hello baby, who are you waiting for) a woman said in a gentle, loving tone.
Emma looked up to see a kind Vietnamese woman sitting next to her. The woman smiled warmly, and her eyes held a softness that immediately made Emma feel at ease.
“Hi,” Emma replied, not understanding all of the words but recognizing the woman’s kindness. "I’m waiting for my parents."
The woman’s smile widened. “Ồ, con thật dễ thương. Đừng lo, mẹ sẽ ở đây với con. Con có thể nói chuyện với mẹ nhé?”( “Oh, you are so cute. Don't worry, I will be here with you. You can talk to me.) She said sweetly, her voice soothing.
Emma smiled shyly, nodding, though she could only understand bits of what the woman was saying. Still, the way she spoke made Emma feel cared for. The woman began talking to her in a soft, motherly tone, and Emma felt an odd sense of comfort, as though she had known this woman for a long time.
As the woman continued speaking, something strange started to happen. Emma noticed that her surroundings seemed to blur, and the air around her felt warmer. She glanced down at her hands, confused. They looked... different. Smaller. Her fingers, once a little too long and clumsy, had shrunk, and her skin had taken on a soft, light tan.
Her clothes felt tighter as she looked down at herself, but she couldn’t quite understand what was going on. She reached up to touch her face, feeling the features of her face shifting under her fingers. They looked different — softer, rounder, younger. She looked up at the woman beside her, her heart beginning to race.
The woman’s smile seemed to grow even warmer, and she spoke again, “Lan Anh, con yêu, chúng ta sẽ sớm gặp ba con.”(Lan Anh, we will see your father soon.) The words sounded so familiar now, as though they belonged to her. The name felt like a natural part of her, as if she had always been Lan Anh. "Let’s go home, Lan Anh."
A wave of recognition washed over her, as if a veil had been lifted. Emma’s mind seemed to clear, and she now understood the words she had heard, and they felt completely right. "Mẹ," she whispered, her voice a little higher, now fully immersed in the transformation. She felt as if everything had clicked into place — her name, her surroundings, and the love she felt from this woman, who was now unmistakably her mother.
The woman gave a soft laugh, "Yes, I’m your mommy, Lan Anh."
She smiled again, a feeling of absolute certainty filling Lan Anh's chest. This was her mother, and she had always been her daughter. The world she had known before, with her old name and life, had already begun to feel like a distant memory.
The woman gently held Lan Anh’s hand as they stood up, ready to board their flight home. The only thing on Lan Anh's mind was her daddy. “I can’t wait to see Daddy!” she exclaimed excitedly in her newly learned Vietnamese.
Her mother smiled, squeezing her hand, “We’ll be home soon, Lan Anh. Everything will be perfect.”
As they walked toward their gate, Lan Anh felt an overwhelming sense of love and security. The name, the language, and the feeling of belonging to this family all made perfect sense to her. She could hardly wait to see her father and start their new life together as a family.
Everything was exactly as it should be.
