Jenna sat patiently in the airport terminal, her eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of her parents and little brother. They had gone to get some snacks, leaving her alone with their luggage. She played with the zipper on her backpack, her thoughts wandering as she waited.
A man and a young girl approached, taking the seats next to her. The girl, about six years old, had curly hair and a bright smile. Jenna smiled politely at them before returning to her people-watching.
"Hi," the little girl said, swinging her legs back and forth. "Are you waiting for someone too?"
Jenna nodded. "Yeah, my family went to get some food. What about you?"
The man, presumably the girl's father, gave a warm smile. "We're waiting for our flight. It's always a long wait, isn't it?"
As they chatted, Jenna felt an odd tingling sensation starting in her fingers and toes. She tried to ignore it, but it spread, making her feel strangely light-headed. She glanced at the man and the girl, who seemed completely at ease.
The tingling sensation grew stronger, and Jenna's body began to change. Her limbs felt shorter, and her clothes became loose. Her hair, previously long and straight, shortened and became tousled. She felt her face change, her features becoming more rounded and childlike.
Jenna's clothes morphed into a simple pair of shorts and a T-shirt, while her sneakers became small, colorful sneakers suitable for a child. The transformation continued until she was no longer a teenage girl but a six-year-old boy.
As the changes settled, Jenna's memories began to shift. She remembered birthday parties, playing with toy cars, and learning to ride a bike. Her family memories altered, and she recalled the man next to her as her dad and the girl as her sister. She was no longer Jenna but Jake, a young boy full of energy and curiosity.
Jake looked up at his dad with a wide grin. "Dad, when are we getting on the plane?"
His dad chuckled, ruffling Jake's hair. "Soon, buddy. Just a little longer."
Nothing seemed strange to Jake. He felt a deep sense of belonging and love, completely at ease in his new reality. He glanced around the terminal, excited for the adventure ahead with his family.
Holding his dad's hand, Jake skipped alongside his sister, eager to board the plane and see what fun awaited them. Everything felt perfect, just as it should be.
Jake’s dad, Mr. Thompson, stood up and stretched. “Alright, Jake, why don’t you go use the restroom before we board? Don’t want you needing to go in the middle of the flight.”
Jake nodded eagerly, “Okay, Dad!” He left his family and trotted toward the restroom, feeling the buzz of excitement that airports always seemed to give him. Inside, he went to the urinal without a second thought, handling the task with the ease and confidence of someone who had done it many times before.
After washing his hands, Jake rejoined his family just as the boarding call for their flight sounded over the loudspeakers. Mr. Thompson picked up their carry-on bags, and Jake held his dad’s hand, bouncing a little on his toes with excitement.
As they moved through the boarding process and onto the plane, Jake settled into his window seat, his sister beside him and his dad on the aisle. He looked out at the runway, feeling a mix of anticipation and curiosity about their destination.
“Dad, where are we going again?” Jake asked, even though he already knew. He just liked hearing his dad talk about their trip.
Mr. Thompson smiled, “We’re going to Grandma’s house, remember? You and your sister are going to spend the summer there. Lots of fun and adventures to be had.”
Jake’s sister, Lily, chimed in, “Yeah, Grandma said she has a surprise for us!”
Jake grinned, imagining all the wonderful possibilities of what the surprise could be. As the plane took off, he felt a sense of contentment and excitement. The feeling of the plane ascending into the sky was thrilling, and he pressed his face to the window, watching the ground disappear below.
Throughout the flight, Jake played games with Lily, colored in his coloring book, and listened to his dad read stories. It all felt so natural and familiar, as if this was how it had always been.
When the plane finally landed, Jake felt a jolt of joy. He couldn’t wait to see Grandma and spend the summer in her big house with its sprawling backyard and all the adventures it promised. They disembarked, collected their luggage, and headed toward the exit where Grandma was waiting with a big smile.
“Jake! Lily! I’m so happy to see you!” Grandma said, hugging them both tightly. “Are you ready for a fun summer?”
“Yes, Grandma!” Jake and Lily chorused, their voices full of excitement.
As they drove to Grandma’s house, Jake felt a deep sense of happiness and belonging. Everything was perfect, just as it should be, and he couldn’t wait to see what adventures awaited him and his family in the weeks to come. To Jake, nothing seemed strange at all
