Two little girls, Sophie and Ava, were flying alone for the first time. At ages eight and nine, they felt very grown-up and excited about their adventure. The plane ride was filled with laughter and games as they anticipated their trip to visit Sophie’s grandparents.

“I need to go to the bathroom,” Ava said, unbuckling her seatbelt.

“Okay, I’ll wait here,” Sophie replied, her eyes glued to her coloring book.

Ava made her way down the aisle to the bathroom. She locked the door and felt a strange sensation wash over her. Everything went black for a moment, and when she opened her eyes, she felt completely different. She glanced in the small mirror and gasped. Staring back at her was not the face of a nine-year-old girl, but that of a woman in her early thirties.

New memories began to flood Ava's mind: of raising Sophie, of countless bedtime stories, school drop-offs, and family vacations. She remembered every detail vividly, as if she had always been Sophie's mother. The initial shock gave way to a strange sense of normalcy. This was who she was now, and it felt right.

Ava adjusted her clothes, which had transformed into a comfortable outfit suitable for a young mother, and took a deep breath. She left the bathroom and walked back to her seat where Sophie was waiting.

But Sophie wasn’t the same anymore. In her place was a two-year-old toddler, wide-eyed and curious about the world around her. Ava—now fully embodying her new role—smiled warmly.

“There you are, sweetheart,” Ava said, picking up Sophie and holding her close. “Did you behave while Mommy was gone?”

Sophie giggled and nodded, her little hands reaching up to touch Ava's face. “Mommy, airplane!”

“Yes, we’re on an airplane, honey. Are you having fun?” Ava asked, settling Sophie back into her seat and buckling her in.

Sophie nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, Mommy!”

As the plane continued its journey, Ava kept Sophie entertained with snacks and toys. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary to either of them. To Ava, she had always been Sophie's mother, and to Sophie, she had always been Ava's little girl.

When the plane began its descent, Ava made sure Sophie was secure and comfortable. She held Sophie’s tiny hand, reassuring her about the landing. This was Sophie's first flight, after all.

When the plane touched down and taxied to the gate, Ava and Sophie disembarked, with Ava carrying Sophie in her arms. They were greeted by Sophie’s grandparents, who were delighted to see them. Ava exchanged hugs and pleasantries with them, seamlessly fitting into her new role.

The summer stretched out before them with endless possibilities, and Ava couldn’t wait to make more memories with her beloved daughter, Sophie. As they drove to the grandparents’ house, Ava looked at Sophie in the rearview mirror, feeling a deep sense of gratitude and happiness.

Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. They were just a mother and daughter, excited for the adventures and love that awaited them.
