Tonight, one unsuspecting man steps through a door. There’s no preparation, no explanation and no clue on how to get back. Get set as Mitchel Patton, takes on the challenge of a mischievous fairy, on Thank God You’re Her.

“Welcome to Thank God You’re Her. I’m your host, Meadows Greenvine. Whenever I feel like it I send one mortal man, through a pink door into a body they’ve never been. Today our mortal has a life changing adventure where they pretend to be someone they’re not. Let’s meet our mortal, Mitchel Patton…”

Mitchel stirred from the strange dream as his alarm clock blared indicating it was time to get up and ready for work. He looked around the room and as he thought he saw something shiny from the corner of his eye. When he turned he heard a faint whizzing sound then nothing. He yawned and stretched as he got out of bed but paused when he thought he was being watched.

Not sure why he felt that way and now being behind schedule, Mitchel shrugged the feeling off. He put on the shirt and shorts he had laying on the floor next to the bed and went to open his bedroom door and hesitated. There seemed to be a shimmer to the door, making it look pink. Just like his dream mentioned. Still this was the only door to his bedroom and he wasn’t going to sit in his room all day over what he heard in a dream, so he put his hand on the handle, turned it and stepped through…

Mitchel found himself disorientated as he stepped through the front door of a restaurant. He was unsteady on his feet, which were angled upwards thanks to his high heel shoes. In his peripheral vision he could see strands of golden wavy blonde hair. He also felt a strange weight on his chest being pushed upwards as a fabric clung to his body like a second skin.

“Thank God You’re Her,” a man in a tuxedo greeted Mitchel as he tried to make sense of his surroundings.

Mitchel looked at him confused as he was trying to make sense of what had happened, he had only just gotten up and now it was night time. Then there was the obvious that he wasn’t in his own body, or his own gender. He could’ve sworn he heard people laughing at his expense too.

“You are Michelle, my blind date aren’t you?” the man asked him as he reached out his hand.

“Me?” Mitchel asked in a high pitched voice that sounded like he had just swallowed the air out of a helium balloon. He turned his head, further obscuring his vision with his new hair as he heard more laughing. He wasn’t sure what was going on and froze.

“You’re more beautiful than I imagined,” the man led Mitchel down to a table by the window, which had a lovely display of flowers, two empty glasses and a menu waiting for them. The man pulled out a chair for Mitchel to sit down, he happily obliged anything to get off his feet. “So tell me about yourself, what is it that you do?”

Mitchel figured he must be dreaming still, that this was still an extension of the dream with the fairy mentioning a pink door. Still this didn’t feel like a dream, outside the laughter he kept hearing. He had also not dreamt of being a woman before and certainly not on a date.

“I myself am an accountant,” the man said without waiting for Mitchel to respond. “You know what they say about accountants…” the man prompted.

“No…” Mitchel stated as he ran a hand through his hair, seeing what it felt like. It felt real enough that he wanted to grope himself and pat down his crotch but he was in a public place so resisted the urge.

“What do you like to do for fun?” the man asked another question as if he were reading lines.

Mitchel looked at the man again and tested a theory, he didn’t say a thing and let an awkward silence fill the air.

“Are you ready to order?” A waiter broke the silence.

“Yes, for entree I’ll have the cheesy garlic bread, the prawn carbonara for my main and the sticky date pudding for dessert, I’ll also have your finest red…” the man informed the waiter.

“And for the lady?” the waiter turned to face Mitchel

“I’ll have the…” Mitchel began but stopped once more something seemed off. Besides the fact he stepped out of his bedroom into another body.

Once again there was an awkward silence.

“I’m sorry, what would you have?” the waiter asked again but this time Mitchel didn’t even answer.

“Jessica!” someone screamed as a short and balding man came over to the table. “What are you doing with my wife?”

“Your wife, I thought she was my date… and her name is Michelle.” The man she was with stood up.

“Jessica I demand an explanation for this immediately, how could you and on our anniversary?!” the short man began to sob.

“My name is Mitchel…” Mitchel answered standing up before hearing a loud buzzer. Time seemed to stop as the middle of the restaurant faded away revealing a studio audience of all sorts of weird humanoid creatures. In the middle there looked to be a fairy sitting at a table.

Another fairy flew through the front door of the restaurant and through the door, Mitchel could see his bedroom. “I would say that was an excellent performance but that would be a lie,” Meadows flew up and shook Mitchel’s hand. “Though you do look pretty, anyway enough about what I think, what about our judge, do you think Mitchel deserves to go back to his old life or stay as Jessica?”

“Hmm, I’ll give him points for not groping himself, a lot of our contestants do that. Though his performance was flat, he didn’t embrace the challenge. So I’m going to allow him to return to his old life… but he can keep the new body.”

“Wait what?” Mitchel asked as he was being escorted back to his bedroom. “What do you mean keep the body?”

“Well that was fun… not the performance but the outcome…” Meadows said to the audience. “Join us next time as we send Cameron Turner through the Pink Door on Thank God You’re Her!”

That was the last thing Mitchel heard before his bedroom door shut behind him. He looked down to see he was wearing his shirt and shorts from before, only he was still the woman from before…
