I don’t help a Karen; got a new job
I (19F) was a 25 year old man up until last week. I worked in construction and often went to my local hardware store to pick up supplies. I was a frequent visitor to the store and I had never been confused for an employee before, my work uniform was completely different to theirs and when I was out of uniform there was no way I’d be mistaken for an employee.
The last time I visited there as a customer I was in the tool aisle when I heard someone clearing their throat. “Excuse me,” a middle-aged woman demanded my attention. I turned around to see the typical looking Karen, with the asymmetrical bob cut, sunglasses, etc. “I need help getting that down.” She pointed to the very top of the shelf.
Now I probably could’ve gotten the item down but I was in a bit of a hurry and the woman had rubbed me the wrong way. So I gave the standard reply. “I don’t work here lady,” I muttered as I tried to walk away.
“I’m not blind, I know you don’t work here. I just thought you’d show some manners and help a woman out,” the Karen retorted as she grabbed onto my arm.
“It’s not my job, go find an employee to help.” I responded as I pulled my arm free from her grasp. “Look there’s someone,” I said pointing out my current body. She was scanning items on her tablet, and didn’t notice me or the Karen.
“I don’t have time for that, she’s way too short and would need to get a ladder, it’ll be so much easier if you do it,” the Karen replied once more. I just shook my head and walked away.
A second later I was on the opposite end of the aisle looking down at a tablet showing the number of hammers in front of me. I heard a manly scream and turned to see myself near the Karen.
“Now you do work here, get that item down for me,” the Karen told my former body. I was too shocked to move and the girl was too shocked that she just obeyed the Karen without a second thought. “Now how hard was that?” the Karen asked my former body before walking off. Leaving me and the employee stuck in each other’s bodies.
I know I could’ve handled the situation better and helped when she had asked. But still what kind of person completely ruins the lives of two strangers just because they refuse to help? Anyway that’s how I didn’t work a the hardware store but do now…
