)
The posters had began to pop up around the small city over the last week now. It was made to stand out with its black background and red writing, styled like it had been written with blood. The only thing that ruined the overall style of the poster was the smiley face at the bottom.
"I got one of these in the mail the other day," Ester commented as she pulled the poster off the light pole it had been strapped to.
"Really?" Ryan took the poster off his girlfriend and gave it a quick read. He had seen them around but never paid attention to what it said. "Yeah this isn't trying to drugs at all.." Ryan dismissed.
"What makes you say that?" Ester asked, looking over Ryan's shoulder to read the poster again.
"What makes you say that?" Ester asked, looking over Ryan's shoulder to read the poster again.
"Eighteen plus, thrill seeker, dull and boring life, creepy house on the top of the hill. I mean it couldn't be more obvious."
Ester took the poster back off Ryan and shook her head. "That's some dumb logic there, I mean why would it mention horror or the month long challenge. Besides if it was drugs it's a pretty stupid way to advertise, these posters are all over town, the police would surely check it out."

"Why are we even talking about this stupid poster..." Ryan wasn't happy he was proven wrong so easily and so he continued walking down the street but stopped when he noticed Ester hadn't caught up. He turned around and saw that she hadn't moved very far and was still holding that poster. He sighed and walked back. "What's it for then?"
"I don't know, probably some elaborate game, with 31 different haunted houses or other scary challenges. That's probably why registration is at the most infamous house in the city," Ester surmised. She then eyed off the poster once more. "We should sign up." Ester paused as she saw Ryan's lack of enthusiasm. "Come one it'll be fun." Ryan skill wasn't convinced. "Fine, I'll just sign up without you," Ester smiled as she walked ahead of Ryan pretending to ignore him. "Though of course that would mean I wouldn't have you to protect me if anything bad were to happen."
"Fine..." Ryan gave up as he caught up to Ester and matched her pace. "I'll go with you to the house and if this is real, I'll sign up with you."
"You're the best," Ester kissed Ryan on the cheek and then clung to his arm as they walked to Ester's place.

Ester's house was only another block away and was in a nice suburban street. She lived with her older sisters, Tamara and Ruby. The house belonged to their parents, who passed away last year. While pristine on the outside, the inside of the house had begun to fall into disrepair as the girls couldn't afford to have some of the issues fixed. Despite the condition of the house, Ryan enjoyed being at Ester's as there weren't really any rules and he didn't need to worry about his parents.
"I'm boring the car!" Ester yelled down the hall way as she and Ryan stepped in the front door. "I won't be long!"
"Where are you going?" Tammy asked stepping out of her room.
"I thought we agreed the car was mine tonight," Ruby protested. "Oh, hi Ryan."
"Hey..."
"Like I said, I won't be long. twenty minutes tops. Ryan and I are just heading to the old estates for an errand. It's too long to walk. You'll have the car back before you date," Ester explained as she pocketed the keys.
"I better!" Ruby warned.
"What errand in the old estates?" Tammy questioned, looking at Ryan this time.
"Ester wants to sign up for that thirty-one day challenge that's been advertised around town. You know the one on those creepy posters."
"Ryan!" Ester punched him softly in the arm.

"Really?" Tammy asked surprised. "I was curious about that myself, not entirely sure what it's about. If you two are signing up for it, I will too."
"I'll go too," Ruby added as she held out her hand to Ester. "I'm driving." Ester handed the keys over to her sister and gave Ryan a look as the four of them hopped in the car, with Ryan and Ester in the back.
The old estates weren't that far from where Ester and her sisters lived but the roads were old and winding and surrounded by trees. The houses up here were the original high end area of the city until forest fires burnt most of them down. The only house that remained completely intact was the house at the very top of the hill, though it too was derelict. Ruby pulled into the old driveway, parking just in front of the steps that lead to the entrance. Everyone got out of the car and though it was close by, Ruby locked it.
"Welcome, signing up for the Horror and Transformation challenge?" A woman with straight blonde hair and green eyes, dressed in black, greeted them. "I'm Samantha Black, I'm the one running this event. No doubt you've got questions?"
"I'll go too," Ruby added as she held out her hand to Ester. "I'm driving." Ester handed the keys over to her sister and gave Ryan a look as the four of them hopped in the car, with Ryan and Ester in the back.

"What is this thing exactly?" Ryan asked. "I mean the poster didn't really give much information, just that'll be a month long event."
"Like it said, you'll be experiencing something new everyday," Samantha didn't elaborate any further.
"But what will be experiencing?" Ryan asked again, slightly annoyed.
"Horrors and transformations, duh... can't you read?" Samantha remarked sarcastically.
"Okay, I get the horror part but the transformations?" Ryan wanted to know everything he could before he signed up.
"Transformation; noun. A marked change in form, nature, or appearance," Samantha was losing her patience with Ryan.

Ryan went to say something else but Ester put her hand on his shoulder and stepped in front of him before he could say something he'd regret. "I think my boyfriend wants to know is the exact details of what's going to happen when we sign up. Like how these horrors and transformations occur and how much time each day this even takes up, that sort of thing."
"Oh, okay. I guess yeah... most people just want the mystery and find out when it starts but if you want to know now that's okay. Though I'm warning you there will be consequences if you refuse to sign up after I explain it."
"Wait so we have to sign up now?" Tammy clarified.
"No, I mean then it's not signing up then is it? That'll be drafting. I'm just saying there's consequences if you say no and if you ask me what those are... well there's consequences for that too."
"Okay tell us then," Ryan demanded.

"Very well, by signing up to this event, every day this month you'll experience something to do with horror or a transformation, sometimes both. Some of the days will start off normal, other days you'll wake up with the changes. Some days you'll be yourself, other days you might have a role to play. Some days you'll wake up in your house, other days you'll wake up in a new environment. After the day is finished, or you don't make it to the end, you'll wake up the next day in a whole new... story for the lack of a better term."
"What do you mean, don't make it to the end?" Tammy enquired.
"What do you mean, don't make it to the end?" Tammy enquired.
"Well it's horror, people die in horror. Sometimes they don't but sometimes not dying is worse, though this will be only for a day so not dying mostly better."
"Wait we're going to die doing this challenge?" Ruby clarified.
"Yes... but you'll be okay the next day. Haven't you been paying attention? You won't die everyday, some of the transformations are quite harmless and offer a day living slightly different. It's why I put the 'and' in, it's not all horror. And with playing the roles sometimes you get to do the killing, that's always fun... think of it like a violent video game."
"You are crazy... this is crazy... there's no way I'm going to..." Ryan started to yell at Samantha. She grinned at him and waved her hand. "Bawk.. bawk.. bawk.."
"Ryan!" Ester screamed as her boyfriend was turned into a chicken right before her eyes. "Change him back..."
"I'm sorry but he chickened out of my challenge, I told you there'd be consequences if you said no to signing up after I explained it. As an added bonus you now know this is real. Now I'd think about this carefully if I were you three, do you want to avoid the horrors next month will bring and be a chicken for the rest of your lives? Or will you be brave enough to go through my challenge, knowing you will die?"
"Wait... is this permanent?" Ester asked, as tears began to flow.
"It will be if he doesn't sign up..."
"He's a chicken, how is he meant to sign up?" Tammy demanded.
"She's his owner now I guess, she can sign him up. It's really lucky you guys came as a group. There's a few unfortunate people that didn't."
"Fine... we'll sign up to your twisted little game," Ester stood up, wiping the tears from her face.
"Excellent, just sign all your names onto this form and come the first of October be prepared to experience something wild," Samantha grabbed her clipboard and handed it to Ester.
When Ester signed her name and Ryan's to the form she turned around to see that he was still a chicken. "I thought you said he'd change back when he was signed up!"
"I said it'd be permanent if he didn't sign up. He still chickened out of the challenge and is only doing it because you registered him for it. So he'll be like that until the challenge starts. Which is only in a couple of days so think of this as a trial run. It's a good thing you didn't go to sign up earlier."

When Ester's sisters finished signing up they got back into the car, with Ryan clucking away. Ruby sped off as fast as she legally could. "I can't believe you two got us into this mess!" Ruby snapped at Ester and Ryan. "Who knows what we're going to experience next month, we're sure to get murdered at least once. I don't want to be murdered!"
"You chose to come along Ruby, same as me. Ester and... Ryan didn't force us to come along. We just heard what they were doing and wanted to give it a go. Sure it sucks but at least we're not chickens... Hmm, I wonder what she would've done to us if we asked what the consequences were for not signing up."
"I don't want to know..."
