"Bwak Bwak Bwak" Is all I could say as I strutted through the cold streets of New York. I was not a native to this city and was only in town for a few days, checking out the sites. I didn't even get to see the Statue of Liberty. I was completely lost with no sense of direction, I couldn't even remember how to get to back to my hotel. Not that they'd let me into the building anyway. And even if they did, I could open doors. This was supposed to be a trip of a life time and I guess now it was, my human life was now gone. I paused as I caught my reflection in a window. I still couldn't believe the face looking back at me, with a short dark beak, yellow eyes on the side of my head, a pointed red comb, and two wattles that hung past my chin. My body wasn't spared either, as I had a round short body, with bony yellow legs, dark red feathers ending with black feathers for my tail. I had been turned into a chicken.
This was partially my fault, I was the one who went to the 'Goddess Selene' website, I'm the one who made the appointment, I'm the one who hesitated, causing me to be late to the meet up. I meant to go into that bakery, I just got nervous and left her waiting too long. The things her website said she could do, I didn't believe it, I wanted to try it but I didn't believe it. When I finally saved up for a trip from Australia to the US I decided New York would be an interesting place to visit and then I remembered that's where Selene was based so I thought while I was here I would make an appointment and see if she could do what she claimed she could do. That's why I hesitated, I thought about how stupid I was meeting up with a person I barely knew to be transformed into a woman, just for my stay here, so I could experience what it was like away from the people I knew. When I saw her enter the bakery my heart raced and I got nervous. She looked very intimidating and I realized if this was real and she was a witch that could transform me into whatever I wanted, well that meant she could transform me into whatever she wanted. I then began to think what if she decided to turn me into something different, what if she decided to make it permanent, what if.. what if.. bwaka!
I shook my chicken head and began to strut through New York again, I tried to look up at the signs and while my eye sight was much sharper than it was when I was a human, I couldn't make out the words. I had only been a chicken for... well I don't know how long but it wasn't quite a day and I had already forgotten to read. People kept bumping into me, causing me to flutter away to avoid them, only to get hit again. While some people found it weird that there was a chicken roaming New York, most people didn't pay me any mind. Now back to what had happened.
I finally mustered the courage to step into the bakery, taking my chances for a possible once in a life time opportunity, that may have been worth all the risks. Though as I took a step forward I saw Selene leaving the bakery as went up in flames and burnt down in a matter of seconds. I couldn't take my eyes off the burnt out remains, wondering how it happened so fast as if by magic...
"So you think you can stand me up," I heard a cold and angry voice next to me. I turned away from the smoldering husk and saw Selene.
"Not good," my heart raced in fear. There was no point in explaining that I was about to go inside the bakery to meet her, she probably wouldn't of cared anyway.
"No its not you little chicken", she said raising both her hands. My flight or fight instincts kicked in straight away as I turned to run. I felt a dark energy strike me in the back and the top of my head. "Bones pulverized, shrunk and reform as hair gave way to feathers, mouth became beak and a hominid body became that of a chicken in a blink of an eye."
Even though she said it was in a blink of an eye, it felt a lot longer than that. I was now lifted off the ground, either by this strange energy or because I was shrinking. My bones cracked and broke as my lower body reshaped into chicken legs and feathers. Half my left arm had turned into a wing, while my right hand was twisted and mangled. my stubble turned to feathers as my glasses vanished, and my eyes parted to the side of my head. My nose and moth were pulled forward fusing into one beak, my hair became my comb and my chin my wattle. The pain had subsided and I was on the side walk, low to the ground.
I stood there in a daze for a little while, wondering what had happened, as people ran by me, kicking me around. That made me snap out of my daze and the first thing I did was look for Selene but she was already gone. That might've been for the better, as who knows what else she might've done. I did hope for a second she'd return to me and change me back, saying this was one big scare tactic but given the the ruins of the bakery, she didn't seem to be the kind of person who undid things. Still I've got to hand it to her, even know she was angry at me she didn't kill me on the spot and I still got turned into a female in the end, even though I was the wrong species.
I can't believe I'll be laying eggs soon. Assuming of course I didn't freeze to death or become someone's meal and given there were a lot of homeless people around, people were sure to be desperate for a meal. I still wasn't sure what I wanted, I was afraid of death and getting eaten was not the way I pictured I'd go, nor did I want to lay eggs for the rest of my life.
I was so lost in thought not only because I was contemplating my fate but because I was struggling to remember things, I had already discovered I could no longer read but I couldn't remember where I was born, or my cat's name, I wasn't even sure what country I was in. I kept thinking about things, so I could keep thinking, I had a vivid imagination so I focused on that, I imagined where I had gone up to Selene, that she had turned me into a woman and they I was browsing... browsing... the shop for new clothes to wear. I even imagined her doing a mean trick on me, not turning me into a chicken but, making my head fall off before she decided to play... the game where you've got the net... sports with it before attaching it on backwards.
I was too busy concentrating on keeping my thoughts, despite losing some knowledge here and there, when two arms grabbed me. I fluttered about trying to escape I only managed to loose a few feathers. I was then pulled into a box and heard it getting taped shut as I was loaded into a car and driven to parts unknown. On the drive I focused on my thoughts about being human, I imagined my fantasy story I had in my head. It wasn't helping.
When I was pulled out of the box, my heart sank, even though I didn't know how to read anymore, I still recognized these symbols as Asian in origin and the people that were around me were also Asian. I was also in the back of a kitchen where I saw a chef plucking a headless bird, not just any bird a chicken. My life flashed before my eyes as I tried to escape the grasp of the person holding me but I was too weak.
"Grandma, look, we found another chicken!" The person holding me said. "Can we cook it?"
"Are you mad? That's a Rhode Island Red. They're better for laying eggs!"
"Actually they are good for stew" The chef turned around.
"Fine, we'll see how big her eggs are then we'll decide."
I was thrown into a small cage and put just outside the kitchen, my life depending on how well I laid an egg.
