A dark caption.
Preston Harrington looked over at his associate, a man of seventy-five in head if not body as Jodi's smartphone rang.
"Who is it?" His associate asked, adjusting his blazer and skirt as he spoke.
"It's her husband!" He said in his voice. "Now to see if that voice chip works."
He cleared his throat and answered the call.
"Oh hi, Ken!" Preston said in Jodi's voice.
"Hey, uh, is everything all right over at work?"
"Yeah, why wouldn't it be? Oh, did you hear about something? What happened?" Preston said, faking concern.
"Uh, nothing, I guess." He said. "Someone said they saw you and Heather both being wheeled through a hallway on gurneys. Said it was toward that place you said that all the weird stuff happens."
"Oh, uh, no, I can definitely say that didn't happen." Preston said, not needing to fake confusion. Someone saw them? "Uh, who told you all of this?"
"Hey, if it didn't happen, it didn't happen. I just wanted to make sure you were okay, that nothing was wrong. Don't worry about who, I don't want to be the cause of some office drama. I was only concerned you were okay."
"Yeah, I guess you're right, Ken. Look, how about we talk a bit about this later, okay? Just, I don't know, seems odd someone would say something like this."
"Yeah, it does, but again, that's not really my main concern."
"True. I'm glad you called. Thanks for looking out for me."
"No problem. Be home by six?"
"Uh, six-thirty most likely. A last-minute thing that came up, but no later than that."
"Six-thirty it is. I'll have the chicken parm waiting."
"Oh, I do like that. Well, I have to go, bye!"
"Bye." He said as Preston ended the call.
"So, we have someone who saw us and knows Jodi's husband well enough to call him. Great."
"I did tell you we should have had them go to the closer conference room. It would have been safer. Oh well, this can be handled easily."
"Oh?" His associate said, folding feminine arms. "I'm guessing this involves some gaslighting or maybe a bribe?"
"Oh no." Preston said. "No, I plan on going over there at six-thirty on the dot. Like this, using both my voice and hers."
"Wait, you want him to see you like this? With your head attached to his wife's body?"
"Yes. Drive into their driveway, pull into their garage, go in like I'm her, walk in on my high heels with my hands on these very attractive hips and have at least ninety percent of his wife there for dinner."
"Are you insane?" His associate asked. "Did the surgery knock something loose."
"Yes, my head off of my body and her head off of her body. Luckily, I found a spare body."
"Now is not the time for jokes."
"Oh, I know. To answer your question, I am sane. See, if you were to expect your wife and see a man walk in, your wife's body under his neck, and tell you to be quiet or he'd meet the same fate, what would you have done?"
"Probably lost my fucking mind... I see." His associate said. "Will it work with this guy?"
"I don't know. Ask me at six-forty. Until then, we have other work to do. Business before pleasure, and all that."
