A dark caption.
Wally walked into his nice suburban home after a good day at the office. As he was putting his coat up on the coat rack, his wife, walked down the steps.
He turned and stopped. It was the middle of the week and often she was dressed in her more basic dresses but today, well, today it seemed she had to urge to dress much more presentably with her wearing that yellow silk number, nice stockings and heels, and her hair and make-up done up.
She smiled warmly at him, and he did notice her make-up was a bit heavy in her forehead. Odd, as she normally wore only light make-up. He was about to ask her about it when he realized that he couldn't smell any food and that she seemed eager to talk to him. Was he forgetting something they were to do today? If so, this suit would be work, but he didn't recall anything.
"Wally, it is about six."
"Yes, I did have some things to take care of at the office. You're not mad about that, are..."
"No, not one bit! Your timing is actually close to perfect, if I may be honest. Come, let's watch the news."
"Uh, okay." He said. He was confused. While she did read a lot and tried to watch as much news as she could, rarely did she ask him to. Was her dressed and acting this way all related to that? He didn't know, but he figured he'd at least see what was going on before deciding what to do next."
She walked over to the television, turning it on and finding a channel. The black-and-white image showed a news anchor, a handsome man a little older than himself who immediately went into the top story.
"Our top story tonight, a murder in our fair town. I must, at this point, warn our audience, women, those faint of heart to exercise caution watching for the next couple of minutes."
"It has been brough to our attention that the body of a man, a Seymour Jackson, aged thirty-seven was found dead this morning. The police have asked us to ask you, the audience, for any information. He was found in an field just outside of town near State Route 31 with, excuse me, the top of his head missing..."
"God!" Wally said and went to turn off the television. He didn't have to, a feminine hand reached over and turned it off. The other hand held a bit of cotton with, by the smell, was some sort of make-up remover. He then saw his wife's expression go from a warm smile to a dark and serious look with each wipe of the cotton showing more and more of the staples on her forehead.
"What they didn't say," she said softly and matter-of-factly. "Was that my brain was missing. A brainless skull, quite like the one your pretty wife had before my brain was placed inside of it. Now I'm all safe and secure in my new body, 'hubby'. Tell me, do you think if we called the police they'd listen, or would I be laughed out of the room?"
He wanted to doubt it, he wanted it all to be sick joke, but those staples were real, and that tone of voice, that look, he had seen it before. He didn't know where though.
"No, Seymour was not actually my name, just the name on the ID on my old body. My real name, you know what, you're going to guess it, guess whose brain is now in your wife's pretty, dainty body. Sad for her, but oh well, you can't move forward without some sacrifice. I believe you said that once."
With that, his wife, or what was left of her, sat down, crossed her legs, and smiled darkly, a quiet giggle coming out as she looked at him.
This, Werner Hesse thought as he saw the shock came over Wally as he stood there, dumbfounded, was very enjoyable. He was going to have a good time as Wally figured this out, and when he did, it would be even more fun as he came to terms with that bombshell!
